7th Grade Unit 1: The Number System

Prerequisite Skills:
Understanding where negative numbers are located on a number line
Fluency with the four operations with positive integers
Finding a reciprocal of a number
Multiplying and dividing fractions
Long division procedure
UNIT OVERVIEW: In Grade 6, students formed a conceptual understanding of integers through the
use of the number line, absolute value, and opposites and extended their understanding to include
the ordering and comparing of rational numbers. Students will extend previous understandings of
operations with positive integers and fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.
Students will apply their knowledge of integers to real world situations.

Learning Target 1: I can correctly identify and classify rational numbers.

Example
A) Identifying numbers as
rational or irrational

B) Classifying rational numbers

Learning Target 2: I can add and subtract integers.

7.NS.1
Example

A) Adding integers
B) Subtracting integers
C) Applying the addition and
subtraction of integers to real life
situations.

-7 + 4 = -3
4 + (-5) = -1
5 (-6) = 11
-10 7 = -17

7th Grade Unit 1: The Number System

Learning Target 3: I can use properties of operations in adding and subtracting

rational numbers.
7.NS.2

Example
A) Finding the additive inverse of
rational numbers

B) Adding rational numbers

C) Subtracting rational numbers

D) Solving real world problems involving

addition and subtraction of rational
numbers.

Chris bank account shows -$45.75. He worked for 3

hours, and earned $37.50. After depositing his
earnings into his account, what should his balance now
say?

Learning Target 4: I can multiply and divide positive and negative integers.
Example
A) Multiplying integers

B) Dividing integers

7.NS.3

7th Grade Unit 1: The Number System

Learning Target 5: I can multiply and divide rational numbers.

Example

7.NS.3

A) Converting rational numbers to decimal

form using long division

-4

/5 x - /3 = /15
/5 -1/3 = -4/15
4
/5 x -3/1 = -12/5 = -2 2/5

B) Multiplying rational numbers

C) Dividing rational numbers

D) Solving real world problems involving
the multiplication and division of rational
numbers
