When reflecting about golf vacation, we imagine lush greens, fresh
air and a delicious dinner after the golf round. All rounded up by a
peaceful night in a cozy location near the golf course. All this, the golf
courses and hotels in Schleswig-Holstein can offer you. For camping
enthusiasts, there are camping car pitches on uncounted campsites
between North and Baltic Sea.
Whether frequent or time-sensitive golfer, more than 60 golf courses
provide suitable opportunities for golfers at all levels. Since there are
two things, golf holidays should mainly offer: Recreation and joyful
play. And also man's best friend should have his place here dogs
are welcome on many golf courses. Why don't you take your dog
along on your round and enjoy some time together in the fresh air.
And, of course, holiday time is a time for culinary delights as well.
Don't forget to note down May 6 2017 in your calendar this is the
date of the 7th world fish bun day which is celebrated along the entire
Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Fresh mussels and oysters
from the North Sea are a delicacy as well.

Golf sports is challenging for body and mind alike. An

18-hole course requires between 100 and 200 swings.
Besides, the player will walk a distance of up to ten
kilometers most of the time even carrying a considerable additional weight in the form of equipment.
Playing golf hence ideally requires a good physical
condition. Additionally physical fitness supports concentrating on the game. It is not without reason that
many golfers additionally work on their fitness by jogging, walking or swimming.
As compared to other sports, golf has the advantage,
that the entire musculoskeletal system is used without being jeopardized by external factors. Golfers have
to apply considerable force in a well-dosed manner
and combine it with perfect technique in oder to control pitch length and precision as desired. A well-gymnasticised body hat requires the corresponding training beyond the golf course hence is a given fact for
ambitious players who want to improve their own
playing skills. By the way: Even if rarely seen on golf
courses some stretching before starting the round
is always a good idea.
Golfers usually play the game full-heartedly and this
can be pinned down in any sense of the word: If you
play golf for three to four hours a week, the cardio-protective effects are the same as for someone walking
for two-and-a-half to three hours. And of course as
mentioned before golf is a mind game as well. Only
a focused and well-balanced mind can rule the ball.
It is not without reason that golf is increasingly prescribed as rehabilitation sport, for instance after

third hole, the gaze falls on the heathland
Braderuper Heide, at the twelfth tee, you will
enjoy a spectacular view over the wadden
land and the eastern shore of the island. The
holes 14 to 18 are a tactical challenge, since
at each of them, you'll have to cross a water
hazard. The targets of hole 9 and 18 are
located on a huge double-green in front of
the reed-covered club house and the scenery
of the Kampen dunes.
Beginners will find ideal conditions on the
9-hole short course. The "Sylter Golf Academy Allan Owen" offers state-of-the-art training support and diverse possibilities for
practicing as well as a spacious driving range
with covered tee boxes. The club house
restaurant offers delicious dishes for golfers
and non-golfers from morning to night.

with the island's landscape. The Par 73
course extends over a length of 6,300meters from the white tee boxes. Nonetheless
you have to play strategically. In particular

other, and the 77 deep pot bunkers that you
have to avoid are omnipresent.

Golfclub Budersand Sylt is Germany's top links course and already
now a classic in the south of the island of Sylt. The course has been
awarded several prizes and presents a challenge for every golfer.

course design offers you extended opportunities to test your golfing abilities. The holes
are diverse, but fair. They are a challenge for
ambitious guests, but also leave a fair
chance to beginners. Well-placed bunkers,
water courses that are partially crossing the
course as well as larger ponds require tactical playing. In our cozy club house with large
sun terrace, we offer refreshments and small
dishes after an eventful round.
By car, you can reach the North Sea and its
islands, Amrum, Fhr, Sylt as well as the
Hallig islands, within 30minutes. If you take
the other direction, you can reach the regional capital Flensburg, which is directly
located on the Baltic Sea. Furthermore, we
recommend a visit in the Nolde Museum in
Seebll or a short trip over the border to
Tndern in Denmark.

Since the very first edition, FORE! has been exceptionally well received. The

ince 1925 people have been playing golf

on the North Sea island of Fhr. In 2009,
this tradition-steeped course has been enhanced to 27holes. In 2014 we have spectacularly re-styled and/or newly shaped another 12 of the existing 27 courses. The new
and the old courses assign real North Sea
flair to the entire golf course. The diversity
of the island Fhr is also reflected by the
27holes: Pure nature on courses with woods,
water, heather, gorse, beach grass and sand
dune formations. Each hole is different from
the last with new views over the widely-stretched landscape.
The holes are arranged in a way that you
believe to be more or less alone even in the
high season. The three balanced 9-hole
rounds (blue, red and yellow) correspond with
the club colors and all of them start and end
near the clubhouse they are offered in
changing combinations.
The cozy club house complements the overall impression: a wonderful golf course with

Far up in the North, close to the Danish border, there are two curious and innovative
Northmen who made the decision to revolutionize golf course maintenance and let stateof-the-art technology do the work.
Since March 2015 small automatic lawnmowers by Husqvarna are taking care of the fairways. As of 2016, also the tee-offs were
mowed by inconspicuous and unhearable
helpers. Meanwhile there are 24 robotic
mowers driving around on the course deciding more or less autonomously when, where
and how often to start working. This results
in continuously perfectly mowed fairways
which always have the same length, no matter what day and what time you want to play.
We all know how it feels to play during mowing times. Big and heavy monsters hurry
across the delicate lawn leaving noise and
smell, compacting the grounds, polluting the
environment and driving us nuts because
they keep popping up behind us. At Golfplatz
Stenerberg, this is a thing of the past. Now
and then, small and lightweight "creatures"
are crawling cross the course without making
a sound. Fed by solar energy from the roof
of the machine hall, they are climate-neutral
and work without hazardous emissions.
Whenever they are "hungry" they autonomously return to their charging stations, day
and night, never tired.
Stenerberg golfers hardly realize them anymore, but enjoy excellent course conditions
instead anytime. Furthermore, they are
even a bit proud of officially being the first
golf course in the world where all fairways
and tee-offs are consequently maintained by
Husqvarna auto-mowers.

Donald Harradine was enthused when
he saw the smoothly undulating landscape
of Schleswig-Holstein for the first time:

If you now think, there are professional players doing their daily training on a golf course,
you are mistaken. Kids are handling the cubs,
and the sports field of the elementary school
in Westensee serve as "driving range". On
today's timetable, mathematics and German
are replaced with the great game with the
small ball. The golf car of the Schleswig-Holstein Golf Association (GVSH) has come to
Westensee to bring 65 kids closer to the joy
of sports.

The GVSH's golf car was started as a pilot

project in 2014; since May 2014 everyone
can book it. It has comprehensive equipment
allowing to play golf on diverse outdoor sites,
such as sports fields or company grounds,
or even in gyms. The age of the golfing enthusiast-to-be does not matter at all: The golf
car team enjoys introducing this fascinating
sport to kids and adults alike.
The GVSH employees are called appr. 35
times a year, projects last form one single
day up to project weeks in school. Also Companies like to use this offer in oder to give
the employees a new view of their personal
fitness or merely to have fun for a couple

of hours. In order to ensure perfect planning

The driving range is separated from the

course by a historic railway line which is still
used by an old steam locomotive. The club

47meters high Stenerberg hill, the highest

of the Segeberger tourist region next to the
lake Wardersee. Due to the 15 well-integrated water hazards, the slightly undulating
grounds require precise playing. The president of the German Federal Environmental
Agency called the Segeberger golf course an
ecological example which equals an "exemplary nature reserve".
The 15 water hazards are also created as
ecological niches, since 1991 appr. 1,000
solitary trees and more than 40,000bushes
have been planted on an area covering
appr.100ha. The resettlement of plants and
animals from the red lists is fostered by numerous initiatives.

For many golfers improving the own
play as well as sporting competition
under perfect conditions provided by
a traditional course, are indispensable parts of the game. A membership in one of the beautiful golf clubs
between river Elbe and Danish border
hence is a matter of fact to them.
But particularly inexperienced, yet
interested players in the past often
lacked the opportunity to get familiar
with golfing without immediately having to sign an application for membership. Today, the opportunity to
play golf without being a member of
a club is part of the comprehensive
service of most golf courses. They
usually offer public, mostly significantly smaller courses in direct vicinity of the actual golf course.
If you associate sloppily and carelessly built courses with the term
"public short course", you are absolutely mistaken: The courses are
designed and hence also maintained
with the same care and inventiveness as the classic 18-hole courses.
One must not forget, that they often
represent some kind of "visiting
card" of the club and that they are

Public short courses allow people a

first glance to the most likely greatest
game in the world and quite a few
are infected with the "golf virus" here,
so they will finally want to enjoy all
aspects of club life in all facets and
hence become a member.
Having a look at a club's website will
often suffice to learn more about the
possibilities of public playing. Questions concerning required equipment
can in most cases be answered by
the club's team via phone or e-mail,
so nothing will prevent you from your
first tee-off on the public short course.

Golfing with Dog

"Go, Rock, go!" Swift tail-wagging and off runs the dog.
In no time he finds the ball hidden in the rough, daddy
is proud and the game can continue. Granted, this
scenery on a golf course is mere fiction. But still the
story contains a grain of truth: Dogs no longer are an
absolute "no-go" on golf courses.
If you want your four-legged friend to accompany you
on your round, you should before packing your back
into your car contact the respective club and ask
about the possibilities to bring your dog along. If the
club rejects this, Rocky will have to take a nap at home.
If there is no general prohibition, you should yet keep
several things in mind.
First of all, mutual consideration does apply. Even if
the club allows dogs on the course, be aware that not
all golfers like dogs. Hence, dogs should never disturb
other players, neither by barking nor by friendly approaching them.
Even if this is self-understood for most golfing dog-owners: A golf round is no "walkie" so the dog should
have "done his business" beforehand.
In particular for smaller dogs the ways on a golf course
can be challenging, especially hilly courses. Maybe
your dog fits into a cozy basket in the golf cart? Otherwise this means: One hand carries the equipment,
the other one your four-legged friend ... Having the dog
on the lead all the time should be a matter of fact.
Especially on warm days, think of bringing along enough
water for your dog; also breaks in the shade are
strongly recommended in oder to allow the dog to cool
off. Since ticks are prowling around particularly during
summertime, we recommend preventive measures,
but also a tick-out pincer on the round.
Another remark directed to everyone who wants to
bring a dog along without taking him on the round: If
you leave the dog in the car, take good care of him,
particularly in the summer. A parking lot which is in
the shadow all the time (!) is obligatory, ideally the dog
should not have to stay in there for a longer period of
time. Maybe a nice person will take the dog for a walk
while daddy or mummy take a swing on the course?

holes in Europe". When playing this incredible handicap-1-shot, it might be helpful to
be cross-eyed when teeing-off, and the landing zone for the drive is infinitesimally small.
But don't be afraid! Our 18 holes which have
been partly redesigned between 2007 and
2008 offer both easily accomplished and
tricky tasks.
