The Proposal Handbook

Section 21 - Career Profiles

21.1

Purpose
To define the content and format of Career Profiles to be submitted to our clients in KBR
Proposals, and to describe the procedure to ensure that the relevant staff have current and
accurate Career Profiles.

21.2

Introduction
Our customers routinely tell us that one of their most important evaluation criteria is the
quality of the people we propose to assign to their project. They routinely ask for Career
Profiles for senior members of the project team. Sometimes they stipulate the information
that must be provided, but usually we are free to determine the content and presentation.
This procedure seeks to ensure that our Career Profiles will prove that our personnel are the
best, in a succinct and readable format.

21.3

Content and Format

The KBR Career Profile is a three page document. The format of the first two pages is shown
below.

The Proposal Handbook

Section 21 - Career Profiles

The front page contains the most relevant and important information. The Career Profile is
designed so that this page can stand alone. The second page contains additional information
which reinforces the breadth of experience and qualifications. The third page presents, in a
table format, a summary of the career history (see below). The table lists in reverse
chronological order all the most significant assignments since the start of the individuals
career. It provides information at a glance to help our clients quickly assimilate the career
history.

The Career Profile can therefore be presented as a one, two, or three page document. The
Proposal Leader will agree on the appropriate presentation for the prospect with the
Manager of Proposals.
To prepare the Career Profile, start with the summary table because this will help with the
selection of appropriate Career Highlights and other information for the front two pages.

21.4

Career Profile Summary (Page 3)

The table has two parts: Project Experience and Other Experience. In the Project
Experience section, include all the most significant projects worked for KBR and your
previous employers. The Proposal Departments are able to assist with standard information
about the projects that are most often referenced in Career Profiles. In addition, KBR

projects can be selected from the projects database in ProFile, which will pull the standard
information from the project into the individuals career profile also enhancing
standardization. For each of the headings include the following information.
Project Experience:

Year: Year or duration on the project in year format e.g.

1999 00
If the start and end year are identical (1999-99) show only year e.g. 1999
Client: Clients name e.g., ExxonMobil
Project Name: This column is optional. If the majority of your projects use project names
such as Diana, Buzzard etc. you may include this information. Dont use the field to force a
name that duplicates other fields in the table and adds no value for the reader.
Project Location: Country
Project Type: Brief description of project type e.g. railroad, fertilizer complex, refinery,
FPSO, offshore platform
Project Scope: Use acronyms when widely understood by clients e.g. EPC, O & M,
otherwise write out e.g. study, detailed engineering. State if plant is an expansion,
rehabilitation or upgrade e.g. EPC revamp.
Installed Cost US$ millions: State approximate installed cost for KBR or your previous
employers work scope. If sensitive, omit or put in a range e.g. > 500. Check with project or
proposal department to obtain accurate information.
Project Role: State role on project, not KBR job description, e.g. Lead Buyer, Procurement
Manager, Expediter.
In the Other Experience section, include non-project experience such as work in department
or corporate roles or work outside the contracting business. For each of the headings
include the following information.
Other Experience:

Year: Year or duration of assignment in year format e.g.

1999 00 or 1999 if a single year.
Description: a few facts about responsibilities e.g. managed process department of 60
engineers, implemented new systems, provided consultancy to all onshore projects awarded
to Foster Wheeler, New Jersey
Role: e.g. Manager, Process Engineering

For the any of the topics identified that use pick lists in ProFile, the recommendations
identified above are appropriate when editing the Word document.

21.5

Career Profile - First Two Pages

The first two pages are laid out in two columns. The left column contains descriptive
information. The right column contains key facts.
Page 1 - Top
Name of individual: present as first name and family name without titles e.g. John Smith.
Whenever possible, the first name by which the person expects to be addressed by the client
is used even when different to the name on the birth certificate e.g. Joe rather than Joseph.
Initials are not usually included.
Photograph of individual: this personalizes the profile and is of value in familiarizing our
customer with the candidate. The proposal departments are responsible for organizing photo
sessions and maintaining a library of professional photographs for Career Profiles. All
photographs will be presented in black and white monochrome. If our client is likely to be
offended by photographs, they are omitted from the Profile. Similarly, if an employee objects
to the use of his or her photograph, it will be omitted. Photograph will be stored in ProFile
linked to employees database record.
Headline highlight of benefits to customer of individual: this is about four lines of text
which customizes the Career Profile for the particular prospect and client. This highlight will
be different for every bid and will therefore be added by the editorial team for that proposal.
It might read: Successfully led your Kabulek FPSO project and achieved all milestones. A
first-class project manager with 30 years offshore experience, Johns fabrication and logistics
expertise make him a perfect choice to mastermind the Chevrako Possum project using
KBRs innovative hull concept.
Project Role: this is the role of the individual on the project, e.g. Lead Buyer
Introductory Paragraph: This is a few lines of standard introductory text, which summarizes
the individuals career highlighting special skills and experience. It is written in an interesting
and positive fashion. It should emphasize skills or experiences of particular note for which
supporting information is supplied elsewhere in the document. In many cases it will not be
necessary to revise the introduction for specific proposals.
Include the number of years of experience if approaching 10 years or more. Use increments
of five years up to thirty five years prefixed by almost or more than. For example, nine
years will be almost ten years, eleven years will be more than ten years, thirty seven years
will be more than thirty five years.

Where previous employment is a selling point, mention it. Refer to the employer generically
as a major chemical producer, oil refiner, another international contractor, for example.
An introduction might read:
Expertise in 3D and 2D CAD systems and materials engineering enhances Phils leadership
of piping teams. For almost 10 years, he has worked in design and field offices to implement
clients and KBRs standards to engineer a safe, ergonomic, operable and maintenanceconscious plant layout for many different facilities.
Page 1 - Right Column
Senior Roles: select up to four of the most senior roles held which are relevant to this stage
of the individuals career. These are corporate or project roles, which are often different to
job titles or position descriptions used internally. Examples of senior roles would be Lead
Electrical Engineer, Materials Manager, Project Engineer, Project Accountant etc.
Qualifications: state main professional qualifications including name of institution and date
of qualification e.g. BSc (Hons) Mechanical Engineering, University of Cambridge, 1986.
Include main registrations such as Member Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Professional
Engineer, Texas and California. There is space on the second page for additional relevant
qualifications.
Market Sectors: state up to four market sectors which are likely to be relevant in
representing KBR at this stage of your career. Examples of market sectors are Civil
Infrastructure, Aviation, Pulp and Paper, Olefins, Refining, Offshore Production.
Summary Highlight: this is a supplementary highlight at the bottom of the page which
customizes the career profile for the opportunity. It should be different from the headline
highlight. Again, as it is written for a specific proposal, it will be added by the editorial team
on the proposal.
It might say In his four years as Manager of Procurement, Peter established the eprocurement systems proposed for this project. These systems contributed to 15% reduction
in material costs on AZ Merlin.
Page 1 - Left Column
Career Highlights: Choose the two most relevant career highlights for the project to display
on the front page. Structure each highlight as follows:
Heading:
Duration of assignment e.g. 1999-2000 and Role e.g. Project Manager
Abbreviated Project Scope -Client -Project Type Country

Section 21 - Career Profiles

e.g. EPC - BP - FPSO - Angola

First Paragraph:
About three lines of standard description to introduce what the project was about, including
to whom the job was awarded, KBRs role, size of facility, and the most important feature.
Proposal departments should have standard descriptions for the jobs that are referenced
most often.
Second Paragraph:
Describe what the candidate did emphasizing any benefits to the client. Include statistics that
help the reader understand the significance of the role, e.g. no of people led, size of team,
number of work hours or cost that candidate was responsible for, e.g. specified 50 MW
compressors costing 10 million dollars or part of a 30-strong maintenance team or
designed piled foundations using 3,000 fifty metre piles,
A similar approach is to be used when presenting a corporate role rather than a project role
as a career highlight.
An example of a project highlight could be:
1999 2002 Project Controls Manager
Facilities Management - Perth Grand Prix Motor Race - Australia
Facilities for the first ever Perth Grand Prix were designed and managed by KBRs specialist
team and accommodated 150,000 visitors. HSE was paramount and KBR earned maximum
incentive from our delighted client.
Elizabeth led the planning, cost control, information systems and accounting work for this
50,000 work hour project. This included setting up the systems, preparing project
procedures, and regular reporting to the client. Fast Cars greatly valued her pro-active
approach which contributed to keeping the project cost within 5 percent of the agreed
budget.
The second page of the Career Profile contains the following information.
Page 2 Right Column
Site Experience: List the main countries where the candidate has spent significant time at a
construction site, fabrication yard, in plant operation or maintenance. If the list is long, select
eight and put a note refer also to Summary on page 3.
International Experience: List the main countries where the candidate has specific
knowledge of working in that country including, but not limited to, knowledge of cultural

aspects, design codes, procurement requirements, etc. If the list is long, select eight and put
a note refer also to Summary on page 3.
Other Professional Qualifications: List professional qualifications, affiliations and
committee memberships that are relevant in addition to the main qualifications already listed
on page 1.
Papers/Patents: State numbers of papers and patents candidate has written or been
awarded and provide information about main specialties e.g., Seven papers mainly related to
hydroprocessing. A full list will be supplied as a separate attachment when requested by the
client or when relevant for the project.
Awards and Training: State awards and training of relevance to the client.
Previous Employers: List other employers. If list is long, restrict to six where most time has
been served.
Languages: List languages in which oral and/or written skills are good. If fluent say so e.g.
Portuguese (fluent), French, Russian.
Page 2 - Left Column
Career Highlights: Choose two or three more relevant career highlights. Structure similar to
the first page.

update of the Profiles.
Department Managers are responsible for ensuring that the staff they may propose in bids
complete and update their Career Profile each year. They are also responsible for checking
that the content is accurate.

Preparation of Data Master Career Profiles

Individuals will be asked to provide the data for each part of the Career Profile. The proposal
department will format and edit this information to make a master Career Profile.
The vehicle for capturing employee data will be ProFile. Individuals will be given access by
the local Manager of Proposals or designee to input their data into ProFile. ProFile will hold
more information than can be accommodated on the three page format: extra headings for
the sidebar columns, extra career highlights, and extra entries for the summary table.
Individuals will be able to select the default entries for the three page format for the Career
Profile that will most often represent their experience. The remaining information may be
selected as required to show the most appropriate expertise for specific bids. Word
documents with the default selections can also be stored in ProFile so that Career Profiles
are readily available for responses to customers.
For specific proposals, the master Career Profile will be edited and tailored to fit the specific
prospect at the discretion of the Proposal Leader.
