SC stays Centres notification lifting ban on Jallikattu
Supreme Court stayed the Centres notification lifting ban on controversial bull taming sport
Jallikattu during the festival of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

The Centres notification lifting ban on Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu was challenged in the
Supreme Court by AWBI, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and a
Bangalore-based NGO.

Cabinet approbated 50000 crore rupees for Infrastructure Projects in TN


Centre has consented Rs. 50,000 crore for infrastructure development projects in Tamil Nadu.

The announcement has been made by Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways and
Shipping Shri Nitin Gadkari during the foundation laying ceremony of 3 four-lane
National Highways projects in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tirupur districts and 2
flyovers in Marthandam and Parvathipuram.

2015 Sangita Kalanidhi Award Bestowed upon Sanjay Subrahmanyam


Veteran South Indian classical vocalists Sanjay Subrahmanyam has been conferred with the
2015 Sangita Kalanidhi award.

It was presented by the mathematician Manjul Bhargava at 89th annual conference of


the Madras Music Academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

With this, Subrahmanyam became seventh artist to be conferred with this award before
completing 50 years of age including Ariyakudi Iyengar, Musiri Subramania Iyer,Maharajapuram
Viswanatha Iyer, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, GN Balasubramaniam, ML Vasanthakumari and M
Balamuralikrishna.

Thakkar selected for 2016 S&T achievement Award


An Indian origin person Cottalango Leon hailing from Coimbatore has been selected for the
2016 Technical Achievement Award of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Leon was conferred with this award to recognize his design, engineering and continuous
development of Sony Pictures Imageworks Itview. It is a tool used only within Sony
Imageworks.

Another Indian origin person, Rahul Thakkar was awarded for the groundbreakingdesign
of DreamWorks Animation Media Review System. He is a computer engineer graduate
from Mumbai University and currently the Vice-President at Brivo Systems.

MITRA (Mobile Initiated Tracking and Rescue application), a mobile application has been
launched by Puducherry Lt Governor AK Singh to ensure safety and security of women,
children and the elderly during emergency.

The MITRA is a smart phone based app that provides the facility to contact the police for
immediate help in emergency.

No internet connectivity is require and presently it is available only in smart phones

MITRA app has been developed by Puducherry Police department in association with
National Informatics Centre.

Sahayog Kaijin 2016: India and Japan joint Coast Guard exercise
The 15th edition of bilateral exercise between India and Japan titled Sahayog-Kaijin
2016has begun off the coast of Chennai, Tamil Nadu in the Bay of Bengal.

The focus of bilateral training would be Anti-piracy procedures, search and rescue
operations and interoperability between the two forces and other areas of common
professional interest.

Stan Wawrinka wins 2016 Chennai Open title


World No. 4 Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland has won the 2016 Chennai Open title of
tennis. In the summit clash at Nungambakkam tennis stadium in Chennai, he defeated the Borna
Coric (World No. 33) of Croatia by 6-3, 7-5 score.

This was his third consecutive ATP Chennai Open title for Wawrinka (won in 2014, 2015
and 2016) and overall fourth, first won it in 2011.

With this win, Wawrinka pocketed US $ 75,700 and won 250 ranking points.

Tamil Nadu to set up 800MW supercritical coal-based power plant
Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalitha laying the foundation stone for the states first 800-MW
supercritical coal-based power plant. which will come up at Athipattu in Tiruvallur
district over 250 acres of land.
About the project :

This is the first time in Tamil Nadu that a 800-MW unit is being established under the
supercritical technology.

The project will be completed in August 2019 and 19.2 million units of power a day
will be generated

Indias first fully solar-powered educational institute now in Puducherry


Indias first fully solar-powered educational institute had been launched by Sri Aurobindo
International Centre for Education Puducherry.

The institutes produce three times of the electricity it consumes through solar power
plants.

The institute saves Rs 10,000 every month on the electricity bill.

The solar plant system is installed on the roofs of the dining room, primary school,
library and high school of the campus.

The institute has been self-sufficient in energy since September 2014.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa unveils new projects worth Rs 1,002.02 crore
J Jayalalithaa Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had inaugurated a series of projects worth Rs
1,002.02 crore which are taken up by Highways and Minor Ports Department.

The project includes construction of new bridges, railway over bridges and
buildings.

Foundation stone for construction of five bridges and five railways over bridges had
been laid down.The project will help the local people and the other connected states

Tamilnadu And West Bengal To Invest 150crores In Waste Management


Solid waste management is a project under the Swachh Bharat mission. It has been found that
the Indian cities generate about 170 million tonnes of solid waste every year.

The government has allocated 37000 crores of 62,009 crores for solid waste
management. Now according to sources from urban ministry, Tamil Nadu and West
Bengal have used around 150 crores in this regard.

Mahamaham Celebration ends with Theerthavari in Tamilnadu
Mahamaham which is a Hindu religious festival celebrated in Kumbakonam once in twelve
years during the full moon of Tamil month Maasi (Feb-March).It ends on Feb 22 this year with
the last day grand eve being the Holydip.Auspicious time of Holy dip is between 12 noon and 1
PM.

Mahamaham also known as Kumba-mela is a ten day festival celebrated by Hindus


once in 12 years

This year the eve began on Feb 13 and ended on Feb 22 with last day being more
special known as the Theerthavari or Holy dip

Around 10 lakh devotees from various parts of the country were gathered to take a Holy
dip in the tank which contains water from 20 Holy Springs.

IIT Madras partners with Nokia for enhanced broadband connectivity


IIT Madras had partnered with Nokia to enhance broadband connectivity in rural India by
enabling the government vision Digital India.

Nokia will provide technological expertise and funning for research at IIT-Madras
Center of Excellence for Wireless Technology (CEWiT).

The Aim of the technology solution is to control unlicensed spectrum and to enhance
broadband connectivity in rural India.

Tamilian movie Kanavu Variyam to get Remi Award at WorldFest


Kanavu Variyam, a Tamil movie directed by a Chennai based techie Arun Chidambaram has
been selected for the prestigious Remi Award in the US.

The award will be presented to Arun Chidambaram during the 49th WorldFest Houston
International Film Festival, which will be held from April 8-17, 2016.

The film deals with the power cuts and shortage of electricity in the Indian villages.

The movie is produced by A. Chidambaram and Karthik Chidambaram in the banner of


DCKAP Cinemas.

Jayalalithaa the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had announced Amma Kudineer Thittam a
new scheme for supplying drinking water.

Under the Scheme the govt will supply the water to those who cannot afford to
buy purified drinking water from private players.

Under the first phase of the scheme water supplying points will be established.

Tamil Nadu government had announced free bus travel for senior citizens in Chennai
metropolitan areas.

To gain the benefits of the scheme person has to fill an application form and submit it to
transport authorities for the tokens.

Free bus passes will be provided to the senior citizens

Ten tokens are given to the person for a month.

31 species of birds spotted at Otteri Lake


The Department of forest and Animal Keepers at Arignar Anna Zoological Park has carried out
long day census of birds and came to the conclusion that 31 species of birds in Vandalurs Otteri
Lake.

This census will focus on the no of new species of birds had arrived and increase in their
number in comparison to previous year.

The Lake sprawling area of 16 acres and protected by 635m long wall, It has storage
capacity of 8.5 crore liters.

The lake is filled with water and around 31 species of 7256 birds were found during the
survey, and species includes spotbill duck , Spoonbill, dabchick, night heron, Indian Cormorant,
Little egret
Pietro Fittipaldi wins 2015 MRF Challenge Formula 2000
Pietro Fittipaldi Brazil racing driver has won the 2015 MRF Challenge Formula 2000 by
winning two of the four races.

The racing was held in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu at Madras Motor Racing Track.

He wins the game with 244 points by attaining top position among the other
participants.

The 17-year old Pietro Fittipaldi is the grandson of former Formula One World champion
Emerson Fittipaldi.

Famous Tamil Comedy Actor Kumarimuthu Passed Away


Legendary Actor comedian Kumarimuthu died at private hospital in Chennai.He was 77.He is
known for his comic laugh.

He was passed away due to some age related ailments, His debut film was Nandu in 1981,
he acted in nearly 50 films spanning over three decades.

He was also part of the Political Party Drivida MunnetraKazhagam.

Chennai gets first smart self cleaning toilets in India
In a move to ensure public sanitation and to promote the use of public toilets, 183Automatic
self cleaning smart toilets have been installed in Chennai. They are known as e-toilets as they
could be located by people using a smart phone and authorities can control their function using
smartphone.

They are designed by Eram scientific solution who have provided 1600 such e-toilets
in 16 Indian states to various private organizations

Each toilet cleans itself with 5 litres of water after 3 min usage and 4.5 litres if
usage period is longer

43 toilets are specially for women with a sanitary napkin generator and an
incinerator

Each toilet costs around 4,50,000

Germany to develop Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Coimbatore as Smart Cities


Germany will partner with Indias flagship program Smart City Mission to develop
Bhubaneswar, Kochi, and Coimbatore as smart Cities.

The three Cities are among the twenty cities which have been announced by
the Urban Development Ministry.

Germany helped India in the selection process of the cities consists of three delegations
from Germany , Two of them from Urban Development Ministry and One from Ministry
of Housing and Poverty Alleviation.

The famous playback singer P.Susheela enters into the Guiness world book of records for
singing highest number of songs .

Rajnath Singh chairs High Level Committee meeting for Central assistance to Karnataka,
Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh affected by drought and floods
Union Home Minister chairs High Level Committee meeting for Central assistance to Karnataka,
Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh affected by drought and floods.

The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a meeting attended by various portfolio
of Ministers of the High Level Committee (HLC) has granted a Central Assistance of Rs
842.7 crore to Karnataka, Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh affected
by drought and floods.

The proposals from the Union government is based on the report of the Central Team
which visited Karnataka, affected by drought, and Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh
affected by floods.

The committee approved the assistance Karnataka will get the tune of Rs 723.23crore
while Rs 35.14 crore for Puducherry and Rs 84.33 crore for Arunachal Pradesh.

Academy for a period of two years.

Father of Madras Atomic Power Station M.H.P.Rao passes away


The architect of Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS), Myneni Hari Prasad Rao aka MHP
Rao passed away due to old age ailments. He was 88..

He was specially appointed by the then Nuclear Power Board to administer the
construction and commissioning of the MAP.

He had also served as a member of Southern, Western and Northern Indian


Regional electricity boards.

In 1984 he was awarded with Padma Shri.

In 1983 he was conferred with the Sanjay Gandhi Award for contribution in Science
and Technology.

UIDAI launches special enrolment drive in 4 States/UTs
i. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched an initiative to enroll left over
population for Aadhaar enrolments in four States and Union Territories such as Haryana, Goa,
Chandigarh and Puducherry.
ii. In the unique move from UIDAI enrolment saturation can cross 100% when the migrant
population also enrolls in that particular state. As on May 12, over 101.26 crore Aadhaar
numbers have been generated across the country.

Former TCS CFO Mahalingam is non-executive chairman of City Union Bank
i. Kumbakonam based City Union Bank has appointed S. Mahalingam as a non-executive
chairman of the Bank. He is former chief financial officer (CFO) and executive director of Tata
Consultancy Services (TCS).
ii. Prior to his new appointment he is currently an Independent Director on the board of the bank.
He is a well-known name in the field of IT (information technology).
iii. This decision has been taken by the bank in the board meeting with its officials, the bank has
already sought the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for his appointment.
iv. The new appointee will succeed S. Balasubramanian, who is vacating the office of part-time
Non-Executive Chairman of the bank at the close to his retirement.
v. The board of the Bank has also co-opted Narayanan as Additional Director of the Bank.

i. The BJP government has named former IPS officer and BJP leader Kiran Bedi as the
lieutenant-governor of Puducherry for nearly two years.
ii. The countrys first woman to serve as IPS was put under the additional charge of Lt Governor
of Andaman and Nicobar Island.
iii. Chandrawathi was the first woman Lt Governor while Bedi will be the fourth Lt Governor in
womens category.

i. Former Union Minister and Congress party leader V Narayanasamy was sworn in as

counsellor desk of Help Age for interpreting emergency help and assistance, also offers health
related information. It has 247 functionalitythat helping elders in distress.
iii. The app is intended not just for elders but also for society in particular the younger
generation. Which is GPS enabled and picks up the location of the caller and will dial into the
particular State Office.
V.O.Chidambaranar Port Bags National Award For Excellence In Cost Management
i. Tuticorin based V.O. Chidambaranar Port also second-largest port in Tamilnadu has bagged
National Award for Excellence in Cost Management for the year 2015 from The Institute of Cost
Accountants of India under the category of Public Service Sector- Small.
ii. The award has been given for exemplary performance towards optimization of manpower,
savings in electricity, and implementation of Solar Energy Systems, reduction of overall cost
of handling by mechanization and improvising efficiency and logistics support.
iii. The award was presented in 13th National Awards for Excellence in Cost Management-2015
hosted by Institute of Cost Accountants of India. With this the port is bagging the award for
the third time the earlier years being 2008 and 2012.
P Dhanapal re-elected as Speaker of Tamil Nadu Assembly

Union Railway Minister Flagged off Indias First ever Green Rail Corridor between
Rameshwaram Manamadurai in TN
The nations first Green Rail Corridor, a 114-km long Rameswaram-Manamadurai extent in
Tamil Nadu was inaugurated by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu.
What is a Green Rail Corridor?
In order to improve cleanliness and hygiene, Trains in the green corridor have been fitted
with bio-toilets, which ensure zero discharge of human waste on the rail tracks.

All trains on this route will have bio-toilets to ensure zero discharge of human waste on
the track. These include 14 stations with 10 passenger trains, consisting of 286 coaches.

Indian railways signed a MoU with DRDO (Defence Research & Development
Organization) for the development of this technology.

This green corridor is aimed towards the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiated by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian Railways have set the target of providing biotoilets in all the coaches by September, 2019 in order to prevent open defaecetation on
the railway tracks.

Tamil Nadu and UP tops the list in Urban and Rural Internet Connectivity Index list
respectively
While analyzing the telecom connectivity spread across the urban areas of the nation, it is found
that Tamil Nadu tops the report with around 21 million urban internet subscribers, which is
about 9% of the total 231 million urban internet subscriber of India.

Puducherry CM V Narayanasamy presented budget for the Fiscal year 2016-17


Newly elected Puducherry chief minister V Narayanasamy, who holds the finance portfolio,
presented a tax-free Rs 6,665 crore budget for the financial year 2016-17.
Budget 2016- 17 :The budget size for the fiscal 2016-2017 has been fixed at Rs.6,665 crore of which Rs. 4,100
crore is for the non-plan head.

Almost 25% of the budget goes for salaries and wages, 10% for pension payments,
17% for purchase of electricity, 12% interest and repayments and 11%
towards grant-in-aid.

Presenting a tax-free budget, CM also announced a slew of measures to revive


industrial growth, promote employment creation and boost the tourism sector.

The Excise Department had been given a target of Rs.775 crores for this fiscal and the
revenue realized by Excise Department last fiscal was Rs. 673.75 crores and based on
thepast performance the department had been given the target of Rs. 775 crores.

It is noted that almost 75% of the total budget is committed expenditure and this leaves
only 25% of the budget for other activities including development works. The Seventh
Central Pay Commission recommendations implementations will require nearly
45% to 50% of the budget for salaries, allowances and pension.

It is noted that Puducherry being a Union territory is neither entitled for devolution of
funds nor assistance under calamity relief fund. However, a major portion of resources

of Puducherry which faced natural calamities like cyclones and rains, had been
diverted towards relief and reconstruction.

It is also noted that the Centre has approved the additional borrowings and regarding
the additional grant assistance, discussions were held with the governments of

Kudankulam II was connected for southern grid for power supply
i. The second 1,000 MW unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) in Tamil
Nadu was connected to the grid for power supply.
ii. The Russian-designed VVER-1000 reactor was synchronized with the southern grid and is
now generating 245 MWe.
iii. Construction of Kudankulam 2 was completed in July 2015, and it was loaded with its first
fuel in May 2016. Following the completion of safety tests, NPCIL began the process of
approaching criticality on 8 July by diluting neutron-absorbing boric acid in the primary coolant
water. A controlled self-sustaining nuclear fission chain reaction or criticality was attained on
10 July.

TN Govt allotted Rs 204 crore for Thaaliku Thangam scheme
i. Tamil Nadu government had allotted Rs.204 crore towards the implementation of
enhanced gold scheme under a marriage assistance programme.
ii. Thaaliku Thangam (Gold for Mangalsutra) scheme for the year 2016-17 would
benefit12,500 women.This scheme involves providing marriage assistance and gold for
daughters of poor parents and widows among others to make thaali.
iii. While 12,500 women who had applied for the scheme would be provided with 8 gm of gold
this year, about 1.4 lakh others who had applied earlier will be provided with 4 gm.
TN govt to launch 50 Amma Free Wi-Fi zones
i. Jayalalitha lead government issued orders to set up Amma Free Wi-Fi zones in 50 places
across the Tamil Nadu on September 23, 2016.
ii.I n the first phase, 50 schools will be covered at a cost of Rs 10 crore.
Thangavelu Strikes Gold, Bhati Gets Bronze In Paralympics
Mariyappan Thangavelu became only the third Indian ever to clinch a Paralympic gold, while
Varun Bhati secured a bronze as the duo scripted history for the country in the mens T42 high
jump event of the Rio Games.

The 21-year-old Thangavelu, who was merely five-years-old when his right leg was
crushed by a speeding bus while he was on his way to school, joined Murlikant Petkar
(1972, swimming) and Devendra Jhajharia (2004, javelin throw) in the Indian
Paralympics gold club.

Thangavelu won the yellow metal with his best jump of 1.89 metres, while Bhatis best
effort of 1.86m fetched him the bronze.

The silver medal in this event went to USAs Sam Grewe who also registered the same
mark of 1.86 metres.

In the later stages with the contest being reduced to only three competitors, Bhati set
the tone with a jump of 1.83m mark along with Thagavelu.However, just when it looked
like India would fetch an gold and a silver, the American cleared 1.86m to grab the top
spot but the Indians also equalled the height to make it even.

Paralympics in Brazil, which fetched him the gold medal at the High Jump event, TN CM
Jayalalithaa has announced a cash reward of Rs. 2 crore for the athlete.

Narayansamy declared Velrampet lake and surrounding area as open defecation free.
ii. According to an official statement, the lake was, tar roads laid in the area and fenced by the
PWD(irrigation wing) earlier and was declared open defecation free under the Swatch Bharath
programme
Cabinet approved setting up of countrys first Medipark in TN
i. The Union Cabinet here approved mini Ratna public sector undertaking HLL Lifecare to sublease its land for setting up the countrys first medical devices manufacturing park.
ii. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave its approval to M/s HLL
Lifecare Ltd, to sublease 330.10acres of government land at Chengalpattu,Tamil Nadu, to
setup a medical devices manufacturing park (Medipark) through a Special Purpose Vehicle.
Mashelkar honoured with V Krishnamurthy award
i. The prestigious V Krishnamurthy Award for Excellencewas presented to eminent scientist
and former Director-General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, RA Mashelkar.
ii. Former Governor of Tamil Nadu K Rosaiah presented the award to Mashelkar at the
Centre for Organisation Development (COD) in the presence of Habil F Khorakiwala, Founder
Chairman, Wockhardt Group and Chairman of the Board of Governors, COD among other
dignitaries.
Tamil Nadu CM J. Jayalalithaas portfolios allocated to FM O. Panneerselvam
i. Chief Minister portfolios held by ailing Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa have been allocated to
Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam.The portfolios re-allocated include the Home and Public
Departments and General Administration among others.
ii. The decision was taken by Governor Vidyasagar Rao has been taken on the advice of Ms
Jayalalithaa who is undergoing treatment at a Chennai hospital since the 22nd of last month.
Roopa Ganguly, Ganeshan take oath as Rajya Sabha MPs
i. Roopa Ganguly and Ganeshan two newly elected and nominated Members of Rajya

Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of Puducherry and Airports Authority of India
signed MoU to Promote Regional Connectivity Scheme
i.Civil Aviation Ministry, along with Airports Authority of India (AAI), today entered into a
pact with the Puducherry government for the proposed regional connectivity scheme (RCS).
ii.The MoU was signed by Shri Manoj Parida, Chief Secretary, Puducherry, Smt. Usha Padhee,
Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Shri A.K. Dutta, Member, Airports Authority of
India.
iii. The ministry had already signed MoUs with various states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra,
Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh for implementation of RCS.
T.N. tops list of endemic flowering plan
Tamil Nadu accounts for the highest number of species with 410, followed by Kerala with 357
and Maharashtra with 278 in a recent Publication by the Botanical Survey of India
(BSI).Scientists of the BSI have listed at least 37 species of Black plum Syzyguim (Jamun), 10
varieties of Musa (banana), along with 274 species of orchids, which are found only in the
country. Four different varieties of roses, two herbs and two climbers and 12 species of jasmines
are exclusively found in India.
Of the 18,259 flowering plants reported in the country, 4,303 (over 23 per cent) are found only
in India, as per scientific data in the book title Endemic Vascular Plants of India
. Around 53 per cent of all endemic flowering plants are herbs, 20 per cent are shrubs and 15
per cent are trees.

5 Day National Conference on Tropical Parasitology held in Puducherry
i. Around 200 representatives from India and abroad will attend a five day national meet
on tropical parasitology began on November 2, 2016 in Puducherry and evolve strategies to

ii. It is hosted by the Department of Microbiology of centrally sponsored JIPMER (Jawaharlal

City Union Bank unveils artificial intelligence powered robot-Lakshmi
i. Kumbakonam based City Union Bank has introduced a robot on pilot basis to improve customer
service. The robot is named CUB-LAKSHMI. The robot has been introduced in Thyagaraya
Nagar branch of Chennai.
ii. Lakshmi designed and developed by a French Company, has been programmed to answer
about 120 general banking questions/query in English language. However in near future it will
be programmed to speak in Tamil and Malayalam languages also.
iii. A single robot cost around Rs 7-8 Lakhs and can perform work of 3-4 persons. The bank has
a plan to deploy 25 robots by the end of the year 2016, if the trail run succeeds.
Delhi boy Tejaswin sets national senior record in junior meet
i. Delhi boy Tejaswin Shankar smashed the 12-year-old national senior record in high jump with
an effort of 2.26m while winning the gold on the opening day of the 32nd National Junior
Athletics Championships at Nehru Stadium, Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu
ii. The 17-year-old Tejaswin achieved the rare feat of a junior athlete breaking the national senior
record.
Veteran Carnatic music exponent M Balamurali Krishna passed away at 86
i. Veteran Veteran vocalist and Padma Vibhushan awardee M Murali Krishna passed away in
Chennai on November 22 2016. He was 86.
ii. Balamuralikrishna has given his first live concert, at the age of 8. The title Bala, was given by
distinguished Harikatha performer Musunuri Suryanarayana Murty Bhagavatar.
iii. He featured in the popular national integration song Miley Sur Mera Tumhara in which he
rendered Tamil lyrics and starred in a number of films in Tamil and Telugu.
iv. He is an innovator of the tala system in Carnatic music and also played other instruments like
Mridangam ,Viola and Kanjira.
v. He was conferred the Padma Vibhushan in 1991 and also he received many state awar
