GRAMMAR REVIEW:
Topic: Subject-Verb Agreement Rules Part 5 (5-6 minutes)
General Description:
Here are rules pertaining to subject-verb agreement:
When a gerund is used as the subject of a sentence, it takes a singular verb. But when
the subject of a sentence are two or more gerunds are linked by the word and, the
gerunds take a plural verb.
Example: Restaurant-dining is expensive. Grocery-shopping and cooking are
more practical options.
Titles are treated as singular nouns and therefore take singular verbs.
Example: Memoirs of a Geisha is a book which was later adapted to a
screenplay.
Remember:
ONLY the subject of the sentence affects the verb.
Examples:
Gerunds used as subjects of sentences:
Delegating tasks is useful. Communicating constantly and keeping records of tasks
ensure effective delegation.
Collective nouns used with singular verbs:
The team was asked to receive the tasks delegated to them.
Titles used with singular verbs:
Principles of Accounting is the reference material for this class.
