GRAMMAR REVIEW:
Topic: Subject-Verb Agreement Rules Part 5 (5-6 minutes)

General Description:
Here are rules pertaining to subject-verb agreement:

When a gerund is used as the subject of a sentence, it takes a singular verb. But when
the subject of a sentence are two or more gerunds are linked by the word and, the
gerunds take a plural verb.
Example: Restaurant-dining is expensive. Grocery-shopping and cooking are
more practical options.

Collective nouns usually take a singular verb.

Example: The senate is considering an investigation regarding the case. The
media is allowed to report the investigation as it unfolds.

Titles are treated as singular nouns and therefore take singular verbs.
Example: Memoirs of a Geisha is a book which was later adapted to a
screenplay.

Remember:
ONLY the subject of the sentence affects the verb.
Examples:
Gerunds used as subjects of sentences:
Delegating tasks is useful. Communicating constantly and keeping records of tasks
ensure effective delegation.
Collective nouns used with singular verbs:
The team was asked to receive the tasks delegated to them.
Titles used with singular verbs:
Principles of Accounting is the reference material for this class.
