(And Santas just loaded

When it comes to alcohol, its easy to be fooled by

appearances. But the fact is, an innocent 12 oz. mug
of beer or a harmless 5 oz. glass of wine is as guilty
of causing intoxication as a standard 1 1/4 oz. shot of hard
liquor. No matter what youre drinking, one drink per hour
sets the pace for responsible moderation. Eating foods that
are rich in protein beforehand is another way to temper the
effects of alcohol. But perhaps the most sobering fact of all,
is that you really dont have to drink to have a great time!

The Milton-Union High School Marching Band

Milton-Union Band Makes History

Reaches Semi-Finals at Bands of America Grand National Championships
One hundred high school marching bands from around the
country converged on Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis November 10-12 for the Bands of America Grand National Championships. This is one of the greatest spectacles in the marching band
arena. The competition is a three-day, three-round ordeal. The top
scoring 30 bands, plus the top two bands from each class, qualify
for semi- finals. From there, the top 12 scoring bands, regardless
of class, perform in finals.
This year, the Milton-Union Band of Pride made semi-finals
for the first time in school history. This is a really exciting achievement for the band. In order to make semi-finals, the band had to
take 1st or 2nd place in their class in preliminary performance.
Bands are divided into classes based on school enrollment, not
band size. This meant that the Milton-Union band had to beat
bands that were nearly double their size.

Director Zachary Roberts is in his 3rd year at Milton-Union.

This was a huge accomplishment for our students, school, and
community. We were one of only three bands from Ohio to make
semi-finals. I'm so proud of the work the students put in. Of the 49
performers that took the field at BOA, 26 members are freshman
or younger. The future looks bright. I cant wait to see what well
accomplish moving forward.
The staff includes assistant director Julius Huckleby, percussion
instructor Brittany Wagner, and color guard director Julie Noble.
The band also took 1st place in their class earlier in the season
at the Kettering Classic, Hamilton Band-O-Rama, and Miamisburg
Invitational. Other awards throughout the season include best
music, best visual effect, best general effect, and best percussion.
The band was the Class B/C Grand Champion at the Kettering
Classic.

Live Christmas trees are beautiful, fragrant, and steeped in

Yuletide traditions, but many wonder what to do with them after
the season is over. Darke County Parks, in conjunction with Darke
County Solid Waste, are again offering their Christmas Tree Recycling program.
Drop off live Christmas trees at Shawnee Prairie Preserve on
St. Rt. 502, just west of Greenville, between December 27 and
January 13. Just follow the signs up the service road to the dropoff location.
The trees will be shredded and used as mulch on the parks
paths and walking trails. Please remove all ornaments, lights, wire,
tinsel, and nails prior to drop-off and, regretfully, they cannot accept trees with fake snow.
For more information about this or any of the other park district programs, please call the Nature Center at 937-548-0165.

Darke County Parks Winter Hiking Series

To Explore Birds of Winter
Winters brisk weather brings with it unique beauty. Join
Darke County Parks to seek out these seasonal sights and hiking
opportunities. On December 31, at 9 a.m., join a naturalist at
Shawnee Prairie Preserve, just west of Greenville on St. Rt. 502,
to explore the world of winter birds.
The program will begin with a quick presentation on possible
bird species, and then participants will take a bird hike and enjoy
the bird window in the Nature Center. Remember to dress for the
weather.
In the event of severe weather, call the Nature Center to find
out about possible cancellation.
For more information about this or any of the other exciting
hikes in this seasons series or other park district programs, please
call 937-548-0165.

Valley Echoes

Remember The Bank Account

We have a friend that tells us everything she is doing, including the where,
when and precise day. Theres not enough time, and I just cant do any more
than Im doing, she explains.
This little story is for her, and everyone else that has run out of time.
The Bank Account
Imagine there is a bank that credits your account each morning with $86,400.
It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening the bank deletes
whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day. What would you
do? Most people would say, Draw out all of it, of course.
Each of us has such a bank account. Its name is Time. Every morning, it credits
you with 86,400 seconds. Its up to you how you invest this precious time. It
carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft.
Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of
the day. If you fail to use the days deposit, the loss is yours.
There is no going back. There is no drawing against tomorrow. You must live in
the present on todays deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in
health, happiness, and success. The clock is always running. Make the most of
each day. Gingers mantra is, Carpe Diem.
To realize the value of One Minute, as a person who missed the plane.
To realize the value of One Second, ask a person who just avoided an accident.
To realize the value of One Millisecond, ask the person who won a silver medal
in the Olympics.
Treasure every moment that you have. And treasure it more because you shared
it with someone special.
And remember that time waits for no one. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a
mystery. Today is a gift. Thats why its called the present.
