DELIVERY ANALYSIS PROJECT ONE

Recognizing Rhetoric, Delivery, And Techne Within Discourse

The purpose of Project One is to familiarize you with key concepts from this course: rhetoric, rhetorical situation,
rhetorical ecologies, delivery, techne (which is the theme of the course). This project will be the most traditional in
format as it is a text based composition driven by evidence and analysis, but I believe that the depth of theory you
will receive from it will make it worth the effort. The purpose of this assignment is for you not only to demonstrate
your knowledge of the key concepts we will discuss in class, but also for you to be able to recognize those concepts
occurring within discourse, or in other words, real life. This project is not thesis-driven but including the most
important insights from your discussion in the first few paragraphs is something I recommend that you do towards
the end of your writing process (Based on my discussion, I noticed ).
PART 1:
The first step for you will be to choose a text to analyze. Text is defined loosely here, meaning your object of
analysis can be an image, a website, a video, a painting, a sculpture, a tweet, or a traditional text-driven print / webbased composition. When choosing your text, you should first make sure you are choosing subject matter that you
are genuinely interested in, and second, try to select something that you think will be rich for analysis.
Before you begin your analysis, I suggest that you thoroughly describe your object of analysis. Create a bedrock of
detail upon which your analysis will rest.
In your discussion, the sequence in which your discuss your text is up to you but here are some questions that I
would like for you to consider, but please do not order these questions in the order they are listed. You should
select the questions that are salient to your text:

Does this text function in terms of rhetorical situation or rhetorical ecologies? How so? What aspects of a
rhetorical situation or a rhetorical ecology are present in the text?
What connections can you make with the rhetorical works by Bitzer, Vatz, and Rice to your text?
Do you find this text rhetorically effective? Why or why not?

PART 2:
In the second half of your discussion, I would like for you to consider your chosen text using a lens of delivery (in
terms of classical delivery, but more so in terms of Porters digital delivery) and using a lens of his concept of
techne. Consider the following:

How is this text delivered?

How has this text circulated or how does it circulate currently? Did the composer make choices to enable
circulation?
How was it distributed? Was the method of distribution purposeful on behalf of the composer?
How does your text connect to Porters topoibody/identity, circulation/distribution,
access/accessibility, interaction, economics?
Was the delivery of this text effective? Why or why not?
How is techne demonstrated (or maybe how is it absent) in the text that you have selected?
Does the composer of the text take into consideration the ethical implications of what is being delivered?
(Think about the second half of Porters definition of techne from the syllabus.)

I have listed numerous questions above and I dont expect you to answer all of the questions, but I do expect you to
analyze your text in terms of the major themes: rhetoric, delivery, and techne. Your analysis should run about 17502500 words. Please compose in 12 pt Times New Roman Font with 1 margins and save your work in MS Word
.doc format. You will bring a printed copy to class on the due date and I also expect you to upload a copy of your
analysis to Blackboard before class.
