accordingly:
Introduction:
z Some students started the role-play in an awkward manner e.g. Excuse me. Are
you busy now?
z Some students started the interview in a rude manner e.g. I want to ask
about
z Some students misunderstood the situation of the task, e.g. In session 2, students
should ask about the work of the social worker helping the Chinese immigrants
rather than the life of them.
z Students failed to specify or explain what the situation was before starting the
discussion.
z Students forgot to greet or thank the examiners before or after the examination.

z

Some students asked extra questions in the interview. This was highly
discouraged though there was no mark penalty.

Part B: Group Discussion

z The overall performance was poor in general.
Content:
z It was noted that students used Chinglish expressions frequently.
e.g. (Session1) Computers cant read for a long time.;
(Session 3) How long does the length of time trapped?
(Session 4) talking the phone; It has 1000 minutes to talk;
z Ideas were not fully developed or even fragmented. Students used broken
phrases in the discussion. They moved from one idea to another abruptly without
using any suitable linking words or phrases. There was little evidence of
organization in the discussion. During the discussion, some students were not
responding to one another at all. They were eager to say what was on their minds
without organizing the ideas properly. Besides, they were unable to develop the
ideas in depth. They only make short statements without any elaboration.
z Some ideas or solutions sounded insensible and childish.
e.g. (Session 2) to hold a party to welcome the new immigrants & lend them
money to solve their financial problem.
z Students were unable to use the skills of arguments in the discussion. E.g. in
Session 1, students simply listed out the advantages and disadvantages of
computers and books rather than comparing the differences between them.
z In session 4, students were not aware of the purpose of discussion. Most of them
simply discussed the points without relating to the purpose, which was to prepare
for a debate. Moreover, most of the points in the discussion were one-sided.
z Some students did not speak up in both the role-play and discussion.
z It was noted that most students displayed little eye-contact throughout the
role-play and discussion.
