English PIII Integrated Listening, Reading and Writing
Comments on students performance
Task 1
- Generally satisfactory
- Students are reminded not to make up answers for Order Repair
Form A as no information about the condition of case, customers
suggestions for improvement and other comments was given.
-

Common errors found in Order Repair Form B:

Order taken by --- the answer must be the name of a staff, not a date
Reason for breakdown --- the word swimming must be included
Suggestion for improvement --- when giving suggestions, the verb
used is should be, not is.
--- the answer is incomplete if the
students just put the word
waterproofing.
- Any other comments --- No charge for the aid is different from there
should not be a charge for having the defective
product repaired.
Task 2
- Students should think about the purpose of the task.
- Answers were mostly irrelevant as students gave a report about the
complaints instead of referring to the instructions in Kevin Changs
memo. Kevin wanted to know who had dealt with the orders and the
complaints. He did not ask for the background information of the
complainants. He also asked Ada to fill in the forms if they were not
completed and have them sent to him. He also would like to have a
meeting with Ada. When writing the memo, students should refer to
his instructions and give short answers or tell him about the
arrangements. It was not necessary to copy all the information about
the complaints from Task 1.
- There should be a proper ending to the memo. Thank you for your
help was irrelevant as it was Kevin who needed Adas help.
- Gary is a boys name!
-

- Students were confused about the following:

complaints (noun)
complains (verb)
complainants (noun), people who complain about something
- Wrong : I was dealt with the complaints
- Right : I dealt with the complaint of Gary Fung.
Task 3
- This should be a very straightforward task. Students were required to
write a sales letter to deaf patients to promote the Easi Ear. In the letter,
students should emphasize the advantages of the new hearing aid and
how it could help them.
- Students should extract information from the advertisement on P.3 of
the Data File as well as include information from the telephone
conversations.
- Most students tended to copy the whole page of P.3 without making
necessary modifications. There was also little attempt to organize the
materials in paragraphs.
- Students should also note the tone of the letter. It should be warm,
sympathetic and persuasive. Students should also speak directly to the
deaf people by using you & we consistently.
- Present tense should be used consistently when introducing the
advantages of the new product.
