The Vigil of the Nativity of Our Lord, Christmas Eve
On this most holy of holy nights, we friars at St. Anthony Shrine extend a greeting of peace and hope to you and your
family. St. Bonaventure wrote about a crche created by St. Francis of Assisi in 1223. The manger scene still so
common today continues to speak a message of humility, wonder and grace.
Of course, the Christmas season in the Catholic Church begins at 4pm on Christmas Eve. We invite you to pay attention
to the many special liturgical days that are coming up during the Christmas season.
December 25 Christmas Day
December 26 Feast of St. Stephen
December 27 Feast of St. John
December 28 Feast of the Holy Innocents
December 30 Feast of the Holy Family
January 1 Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God
January 8 Epiphany of the Lord
January 9 Baptism of the Lord
This holy season is an appropriate time to think of the many ways in which we here at St. Anthony Shrine are especially
blessed. We friars are particularly grateful to the faith community here which inspires us every day.
The Shrine got a lot of publicity on Monday of this past week when an anonymous donor presented us with a winning
Massachusetts State Lottery ticket worth $100,000. The following all did stories on this event: Boston Herald,
ItemLive.com, CBS Boston, CruxNow.com, Metro, NECN.com, MassLive.com, ABCnews.com, ABCs Good Morning
America, WTHR, The Christian Post, and Univision. All of the reporters were especially nice. Some of them stayed for
Mass after the interview; others asked for a blessing before they left!
Several reporters and several people in-house have asked me what we will do with extra money. The Shrine has an
annual budget of $4.3 million. So $100,000 is only a little more than 2 percent of the annual budget. Included in the
budget is the expectation that people will be generous at Christmastime in fact, it is when we receive much of our
annual revenue. So while its an incredibly generous gift for one person to make, a great point of reflection on our own
generosity, and very helpful to our overall revenue goals, its still only 2 percent of the budget and we still need everyone
else to do your share. Thank you!
Id like to thank Fr. Brian Cullinane, OFM, for running such a great Christmas raffle here at the Shrine. These things are
a lot of work! Christmas came a little early for the four raffle winners: Kevin Cox of South Boston ($10,000), James D.
Daly of Providence RI ($3,000), Joan Tyrrell of Braintree ($2,000), and James Georgia, Jr., of Raleigh NC (two roundtrip tickets on JetBlue). Thank you, again, Fr. Brian.
The second collection this weekend is for Bread on The Common, one of our programs for our homeless brothers and
sisters. This program has always involved two things: (1) Some kind of meal for the homeless that we meet on the street,
and (2) A deliberate attempt on our part to engage in friendly, meaningful conversation with the homeless.
Lately, Bread on the Common has expanded into some new areas as well. We use this time to recruit clients for the
Boston Health Care for the Homeless Clinic (housed at the Shrine on Thursday mornings). We go into shoe stores with
the homeless, one at a time, and buy new shoes for them. Finally, we are going to take on a project of higher-level
training for our volunteers in this program. There is a great deal to know about working with the homeless population
and we want our volunteers to be sensitive, effective, equipped, compassionate and safe.
May you and your families have a most blessed, holy and joyful Christmas. Thank you for helping us serve so many
people. From the Friars, blessings on all of you
Fr. Thomas Conway, OFM
Executive Director

Year- End Gifts

As the end of the year approaches, we invite you to consider making a tax-deductible gift to the Shrine.
There are a number of ways to make this gift.
1. Cash/check - may be given in person or via the U.S. mail. Please note that the gift must be
postmarked by December 31, to be counted for a 2016 tax deduction.
2. Credit card Make a gift on line www.stanthontshrine.org with a credit card. Or, you may call
Ariana in the Development Office (857-206-7243) and give your credit card over the telephone.
Kiosks in the lobby and at the front desk are two other options for credit card gifts. Your
transaction must be made no later than 11:59 p.m. on December 31, in your time zone for a 2016
charitable contribution.
3. IRA Charitable Rollover If you or someone you know is 70 or older and has a traditional
Individual Retirement Account (IRA), you can use your required minimum distribution to
support the Shrine through a Charitable Rollover gift. Contact the administrator of your plan and
ask that your distribution be a charitable rollover to the Shrine.
4. Matching Gifts A corporate matching gift is a tremendous way to increase your personal gift to
the Shrine. We encourage you to take advantage of your employers matching gift program.
Thank you for all you do to help us live out the Gospel in Boston. Please continue to pray for all those
whom we serve with love and compassion. Thank you for making a difference. If you have questions
about making a gift, please contact Maryanne Rooney-Hegan at (617) 542-6440 ext. 115.
