About The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce

The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce is a
membership organization for businesses located
in or have an interest in DeKalb County. For
more than 79 years, DeKalb Chamber works to
help businesses succeed by working with local
government to create a pro-business environment;
tapping into potential customers for businesses;
and providing access and information to support,
promote and sustain business development in the
county.
A strong business community plays an important
role in the economic prosperity of the community. At

DeKalb Chamber works with education leaders to identify

ways the business community can play a role in addressing
education initiatives. Our work towards education includes:
Parents Pounding the Pavement Workshop and Job

Fair: DeKalb Chamber partners with the DeKalb
County School District (DCSD) and WorkSource
DeKalb to help parents prepare and nd work
Seeing is Believing Bus Tour: DeKalb Chamber
partners with DCSD, DeKalb Board of Realtors, and
trusted partners to engage and inform community
and civic leaders about school performances
throughout the county
State of the District Address: DeKalb Chamber
partners with DCSD to inform the business
community about the school districts key successes
and achievements
2. Public Policy
DeKalb Chamber meets with government leaders to promote
our legislative agenda on infrastructure and transportation,
and local pro-business policies that impact DeKalb, the region
and state. Our work towards policy includes:
Day at the Capitol: DeKalb business leaders meet

and observe DeKalb delegation to the Georgia
General Assembly at work to pass legislation
Legislative Preview Forum & Breakfast: DeKalb
delegation shares their legislative agenda for the
upcoming year
State of the County Address: DeKalb Countys CEO
gives an outlook for the year ahead; what DeKalb
citizens can expect; and what challenges are being
addressed
throughout the county. The strategic plan is inclusive of

other Chambers, Community Improvement Districts, DCSD,
Advanced Education Institutions, WorkSource DeKalb, DeKalb
Department of Health, DeKalb Planning & Permitting, Discover
DeKalb, Small Business Development Centers, Entrepreneur
Incubators, and other critical partners.

DeKalb Chamber works with its members to identify more
opportunities for industries to connect and help to create an
environment of business success in 2017. Our work towards
Members Services includes:

Breakfast Club: A guest speaker spends one-onone networking time with members over continental

DeKalb Chamber works with Decide DeKalb Development

Authority, as well as other local development authorities,
and Community Improvement Districts to bring economic
development to DeKalb County. The Chamber is a crucial
partner of Decide DeKalbs Business Alliance Council, and is
responsible for reviewing $75 million economic development
projects coming to DeKalb.
Each year the Chamber hosts several signature events,

programs and service projects. We believe the key to unifying
DeKalb is by engaging, cultivating and connecting the
community. We will reprise the following events and choose
new partners in service to reach the community.
Under the DeKalb Thrives Strategic Plan, the Chamber helps

oversee the implementation of the county strategic plan with
more than 100 tasks assigned to stakeholders and partners

The DeKalb County Board
of Commissioners (BOC) serves
as the legislative branch of the
DeKalb County government.
The DeKalb County BOC
consists of seven part-time
commissioners, all elected to a
four-year term. DeKalb County is
divided into ve districts with one
commissioner serving each district.
There are two super districts,
one on the east side of the county
and the other on the west side.
Each super district is served by
one commissioner. Therefore,
every resident of DeKalb County is
served by two commissioners, one
with the district and the other with
the super district.

About

HISTORIC DEKALB COURTHOUSE

s diverse as it is scenic,
DeKalb County is the third
most populous county in the
state of Georgia.
The county, named after
Baron Johann de Kolb who aided
colonists in a ght for independence, is
nearly 270 square miles.
DeKalb was established from areas
of Henry County, Fayette County and
Gwinnett County. The county, which
contains roughly 10 percent of the
city of Atlanta, has plenty to offer
its residents. From food, shopping,
walking trails and museums there is
plenty to do.
Twelve different cities call DeKalb
County home, including Atlanta.
Soon, Stonecrest will become
the newest city in DeKalb with an
estimated 50,000 residents after voters
approved its creation in the general
election. Stonecrest is the fourth city to
incorporate in DeKalb in recent years.
Dunwoody formed in 2008, Brookhaven
in 2012 and Tucker in 2016.
DeKalb County has an excellent transportation

system with interstates 285, 85 and 675 and is
home to DeKalb Peachtree Airport. The county
is also served by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid
Transit Authority (MARTA).
DeKalb has plenty of unique retail shops and
malls including Northlake Mall, Perimeter
Mall, Gallery at South DeKalb Mall, the Mall at
Stonecrest and North DeKalb Mall.
Dog owners may want to explore one of
DeKalbs many walking trails and dog parks.
The city of Decatur has three dog parks in its
four square miles.
One of Georgias most popular attractions,
Stone Mountain Park, is located in DeKalb
County on 3,200 acres. The park features a
variety of family activities and offers plenty of
hiking fun and even a laser show at night.
DeKalb County also has a diverse school
system. The countys school system is one of
the largest in the state. The DeKalb County
School District is Georgias third largest school
system and serves nearly 102,000 students, 137
schools and centers and 15,500 employees.

a mix of culture, art
and a city feel with the
walkability of a small
town. Named after
Stephen Decatur, a 19th century
U.S. Naval hero, Decatur is the
county seat to DeKalb County and
home to nearly 20,000 residents.
A big part is people want that

walkability and a city feel without
living in midtown Atlanta. Our focus
is much more on pedestrians
and the cyclist than it is on cars.
One of the things is building more
residential property downtown so
people can live and walk to run
errands, Lee said.
Decatur was founded in 1822 at the

intersection of two Native American
trails, the Sandtown and the
Shallowfordthe Shallowford is now
known as Clairmont Road.
Decatur was named a bronze-level

bike-friendly community by the
League of American Bicycles (LAC).
Getting to and from Decatur has

become much easier in recent years,
according to city ofcials. Just a few
miles east of downtown Atlanta, the
MARTA rail station is right under the
citys downtown square.
Decatur has also focused on being
a walkable city and safe for bikers of
all ages commuting to work or just
enjoying a leisurely ride.
City of Decatur downtown development manager Catherine Lee said
the focus in recent years has been on
pedestrians within the city.
According to the LAC, a bike

friendly community is one that
welcomes bicyclists by providing
safe accommodations for bicycling
and encouraging people to bike for
transportation and recreation.
Housing options in Decatur continue
to grow with many newly-built multihousing units. During a ve-year
span from 2005 to 2010 there were
113 multi-housing units built in
Decatur. Since 2013, that number
has increased to 625.
The city also has some of the top
eateries in DeKalb County.
Cakes & Ale Restaurant was

recognized twice by Bon Appetit
as one of the best new restaurants
in the United States. The Kimball
House was named best new
restaurant by Southern Living in
2014.
Decatur also has a diverse
brewery culture. Decatur is home
to award-winning pubs Brick Store
Pub, Twains Brewpub, 3 Taverns
Brewery and Blue Tarp Brewing
Co. The citys Decatur Craft Beer
Festival was also named one of the
top ten beer festivals in the United
States.
Decatur has its own independent
school system, City Schools
of Decatur, consisting of four
neighborhood elementary schools,
one middle school and one high
school serving approximately 2,400
students.
Agnes Scott College is also located
in Decatur, which was recently
ranked as one of Georgias best
liberal arts college by U.S. News &
World Report.

Francis Willis, the city is
modeled and named after
Stratford-upon-Avon, United
Kingdom the birthplace of

Estates. Founded in 1924 and inspired by
the Tudor architecture of England, our city
was the rst planned community in the
Southeast. Today, our town of just over
3,000 residents still boasts the natural
beauty of Lake Avondale and Willis Park

doorstep. While Avondale City evolves
with shops and restaurants opening
regularly, well always be known for
our varied architecture, community feel,
and legendary holiday traditions and

Avondale Estates is also the home

of the rst Wafe House restaurant,
which was founded in 1955 by
residents Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom
Forkner.
In 2004, Wafe House reacquired
the original restaurant building
located at 2719 East College Ave.
in Avondale Estates and opened
it as a museum. The museum
features the interior and dcor
of the 1955 Wafe House. The
museum also features Wafe
House memorabilia from the past
54 years.
Avondale Estates is also a city that
goes all out for the holidays. Many
holidays feature big celebrations
in the city from parades to home
decoration contests. There are also
arts and music festivals.
On a regular day, the city has much
to offer, including its art district
which features the newly created
ArtLot. The ArtLot is an idea formed

by the Avondale Arts Alliance,
residents and businesses to create
a temporary city park.
The ArtLot allows residents and
visitors to explore a creative
experience that includes sculptures
and visual art installations, green
walls and a performance space. It
is also used for other activities.
The city also has thriving small
businesses, thrift stores, parks
and a lake with a lake house where
activities are held with a pictureperfect view of the lake. The city
is home to Avondale Elementary
School, DeKalb Elementary School
of the Arts, DeKalb School of the
Arts and The Museum School of
Avondale Estates.
Avondale Estates may be small
and have a hometown-feel, but it
has a lot to offer visitors and future
residents.

Welcome to
BROOKHAVEN
A
lthough Brookhaven
was incorporated in
2012, the community
has a lot of history
and the city has
worked to build a positive image
for itself in a short period of
time.
The city was originally home to
Creek Indians. John L. Evins
began a large plantation in the
area now known as Brookhaven
in the early 1800s, according
to the Historic Brookhaven
Neighborhood Association.
Around 1900, Atlantans began

building summer cottages in
Brookhaven. In 1910, a group
of investors from the Mechanical
and Manufacturers Club
purchased the land making up
the Brookhaven Country Club
property and lots immediately
surrounding it for a development
called Brookhaven Estates.
The Brookhaven Country Club
was incorporated in October
of that year. In January 1912,
the Brookhaven Country Club
opened as Atlantas second golf
course after East Lake (1906).
Development continued when
lots along Club Drive and Stovall
were offered for sale by Samuel
Stovall, Salsoms son. By 1928,
eight houses had been built
on these lots. Most homes in
Country Club Estates and on the
Carleton land were built during

the Depression and before 1942.
Brookhavens homes include
designs by a number of wellknown Atlanta architects of this
period.
In March of 1984, Brookhaven
resident John R. Brannen
submitted a Historic District
Information Form on the
neighborhood to the Historic
Preservation Section of the
Georgia Department of Natural
Resources. Through Brannens
and his wife Betties efforts, the
Historic Preservation Section
led for listing Brookhaven in
the U.S. National Register of
Historic Places in December
1985. The National Park Service
named the Brookhaven Historic
District on January 14, 1986.
The city is lled with singlefamily homes, mixed-use
developments, restaurants,
shops, parks and the
Brookhaven Library.
The city also features a large
international community along
Buford Highway and Lynwood
Park, which was historically an
African-American neighborhood.
The city is home to Oglethorpe
University, a private liberal
arts college, Cross Keys High
School, the Marist School and
several elementary schools.

From its humble origins,
Chamblee has emerged as a

approximately 30,000 residents

Founded in 1908, Chamblee
was originally a small railroad
community known as Roswell
Junction. The town was made
up of dairy farmers, railways
leading to Atlanta and a military
operations site known as Camp
Gordon, which served 40,000
servicemen throughout World War
I and World War II.
The city soon transitioned into
mostly industrial property and
the aesthetic can still be seen in
Chamblee today. While the citys
manufacturing and industrial jobs
eventually dwindled, refugees
and immigrants took advantage
of Chamblees affordable housing
and 14-mile proximity to Atlanta
and repopulated the citys
neighborhoods.
The growth trend has yet to
stop. In 2010, the city annexed
more than 5,000 residents into
its borders. In 2014, 12,000 more

were annexed.

Located adjacent to the DeKalb Peachtree
Airport, with a MARTA rail station in the
center of the city, and adjoining two interstate

since 2010, the size of the city has increased

CLARKSTON

nce referred to as the

Ellis Island of the
South, Clarkston is
also often referred to as
Americas most diverse
square mile: its been welcoming
refugees and immigrants from more
than 50 countries for the past 35
years.
In the late 1990s, the United States

Asylum program for refugees
identied Clarkston as an ideal
place for refugee resettlement. The
city was identied for its trend of
relocating homegrown residents,
inexpensive housing options and
access to public transportation.
Before long, new residents from
more than 50 countries began
calling Clarkston home.
Today, Clarkston is a hub of
immigrant-owned businesses. Its
not at all unusual to encounter
Clarkston High School students
hailing from Ethiopia, Somalia,
Eritrea, Vietnam, Nepal and North
Carolina.
Clarkston was founded in 1882 as
a railway stop between Athens and
the eastern seaboard. It eventually
grew to be one of Atlantas rst
suburban communities, with
residents often commuting to the
big city for employment.
Clarkston originally bore the

nicknames of Goatsville and
Angora Heights because of
the large concentration of goat
farmers in the area. Angoras, goats
considered to be of high quality,
were prevalent in Clarkston and
allowed to roam free-range.
Clarkstons sole high school,
Clarkston High, has incorporated
this history by making the Angora its
ofcial mascot.
In addition to Clarkston High School,
two DeKalb County School District
elementary schools and one middle
school are located in Clarkston.
The city is also home to Georgia
Piedmont Technical College,
Georgia State Universitys Clarkston
campus and Atlanta Area School for
the Deaf.
Clarkston is along the Stone
Mountain bike path linking Atlantas
Centennial Olympic Park to Stone
Mountain Park, and for this reason,
considers itself to be a walking and
biking community. The city is home
to Communicycle, a communityfounded program offering bicycle
education, repair and access on a
donation basis.
In addition to Communicycle,
Clarkstons Community Center also
offers youth, senior, technology and
healthy living programs. Its common
for Clarkston residents to engage in
tabala martial arts on Monday, tai
chi on Tuesday, uhuru dancing on
Wednesday and contra dancing on
Thursday.
Clarkston also offers Milam
Park, featuring new playground
equipment, a walking trail, a
swimming complex, tennis courts,
nature preserve and a lake for
shing.
Clarkstons Friendship Park offers
15.7 acres of wildlife sanctuary and
walking paths for residents and
visitors.
According to Clarkston ofcials,
75 percent of the citys population
is under the age of 40, speak
more than 50 languages and
about 40 percent are foreign
born. Approximately 85 percent of
Clarkston businesses are immigrantowned.

Nexus, a 13-acre redevelopment
project along Buford Highway, is

Autumn Park, Brooks Park, Chicopee
Park, English Oak Park, Bernard
Halpern Park and Flowers Park, all

mid-century modern houses as part
of its Northwoods and Northcrest
neighborhoods, both of which
have been added to the National

neighborhoods were designed
by Georgia Tech graduate Ernest

cuisine, two current investment projects
will reshape our city landscape:
Assembly Doraville and Nexus.
Assembly Doraville is the gamechanging redevelopment of the General
Motors assembly plant site. Flanked by
MARTAs Doraville Station, I-285 and
the Peachtree Corridor, the 165-acre
site is the largest developable property
inside metro Atlantas perimeter and
is anticipated to become one of the
Southeasts premiere sites. Nexus, a

ithonia is another small

city with a rich history
and is making strides to
redevelop the community.
United States since 1879. Lithonia

gneisses featured in much of the
citys architecture.
Lithonia was originally a

crossroads settlement that served
the trading needs of a community
of rural farmers. Lithonia then
grew with the development of the
Georgia Railroadnow CSX.
Lithonias historic downtown is a

mix of commercial and residential
development representing
common late-19th- to mid-20thcentury housing types and styles.
Main Street runs parallel to the
Georgia/CSX Railroad corridor.
The rail line, which runs through

the city, connected Lithonia with
Atlanta and Augusta in 1845.
In the late 19th century, the line
allowed Lithonia to prosper as
a center of the regional granite
industry, according to the Historic
Preservation Division. Lithonia
gneiss, a rock which the city
is named for, played a role in
construction throughout the
Commercial buildings made of

brick and gneiss are in a twoblock area along Main Street from
its intersection with the railroad.
Community landmark buildings in
the district include the Masonic
Lodge (1916), the Lithonia
Womans Club (1928), the Lithonia
First United Methodist Church
originally Lithonia M.E. Church
(1910), Antioch Baptist Church
(1911), The Union Missionary

Church (1911), the Bruce Street
Elementary and High School
(1955), and The Seminary (1895),
which was individually listed in the
National Register in 1978.
Lithonia is home of the Collard
Green Cultural Festival, which
is held every September at
the Lithonia City Park and
Amphitheater. The city also
established its own farmers
market in 2016.
The city also features Lithonia
Middle School and Lithonia
Davidson Library.
The Lithonia Historic District was
listed on the National Register of
Historic Places in October 2016.

s a city sporting a lake,

located within a forest
and having a population
of fewer than 800, its
easy to see why people
migrate to and stay within the city
of Pine Lake.
Once considered a weekend
retreat for Atlanta city-dwellers,
Pine Lake was established by the
Pine Woods Corporation in 1937.
Lots in Pine Lake originally sold
for as low as $69. It was ofcially
incorporated as a DeKalb County
city in 2012.
Weekenders eventually began
calling Pine Lake their permanent
home and began convincing
their friends to move there as
well. Today, approximately 700
people call Pine Lake their primary
residence.
Pine Lake is named after its

central feature, a lake made from
a widened portion of Snapnger
Creek, which runs through the city.
The city was originally part of a
DeKalb County farm and the valley
where the city sits was where corn
was grown.
Today, the lake is known as the

citys meeting place and center of
activities. In 2014, the lake served
as a living lab for students
taking a permaculture certication
course in which they researched,
explored and envisioned
solutions to several of the citys
environmental concerns.

TUCKER
ucker, a well-established
community for nearly 125
years, was incorporated as
DeKalb Countys newest
city in early 2016.
The community was established

in 1892. Georgia, Carolina and
Northern built a railroad through
the center of what is now called
Tucker in 1892. The Tucker area had
been known as Brownings District
until 1907 when the Seaboard Line
Railway acquired the railroad and
surveyed the unincorporated town
and named the town after an ofcer
of the company, Capt. Tucker.
The community grew into an area
in DeKalb that established a strong
community support, desirable
location and mix of residential,
ofce, commercial and industrial
properties, along with parks and
green space.
Today, the citys mayor and
council are using an advanced
public-private partnership to
deliver services to Tuckers 33,000
residents and business owners.
Main Street is always busy with fun

activities due in part to the work of
Tuckers Main Street Alliance. There
are annual event, including Tucker
Day, Christmas on Main Street, the
Tucker Chili Cook-off and more.
Main Street also hosts the citys

weekly farmers market.
Tucker is Home to Tucker High,

he city of Stone Mountain
has become a well-known
tourist attraction in DeKalb
County due in part to
Stone Mountain Park.
Although the park is its own tourist

attraction, the city has something
to offer to tourists as well in Stone
Mountain Village.
Stone Mountain Village was

established in the early 1980s. The
area that now makes up the city of
Stone Mountain was incorporated
into the newly formed DeKalb
County in 1822. A post ofce was
created in 1834, a hotel was built in
1836 and an observation tower was
built at the summit of the mountain.
By 1839, a general store was added
and the village was established
under the name New Gibraltar.
The name was ofcially changed
to Stone Mountain by the Georgia
Legislature in 1847.
During the Civil War, Stone
Mountain Village was destroyed

by men under the command
of General James Birdseye
McPherson on July 19, 1864. On
Nov. 16, 1864, General William
Shermans union troops destroyed
the railroad track to the north of the
mountain during the March to the
Sea.
The railroad track is the oldest

structure that was burned by
Sherman during the Civil War that is
still in use today.
These days the village celebrates
the citys history and preserves the
long lasting impact of a community
that was built for workers and
artisans. The old Trolley Car
Barn and Power Station in Stone
Mountain Village were both
preserved for artisans.
In 1986, DeKalb County wanted to
add an art center on the east side
of the county.
The old Trolley Car Barn and Power
Station were was purchased by

ARTStation in 1987 and a $3.5
million campaign was completed
to renovate the space into a
contemporary arts center housing
a small theater, ve art galleries, a
gift shop, rehearsal space, dance
and music studios, ceramics
studio, box-ofce, production and
administrative space.
The ART in the ART Station name
comes from a 1913 photograph of
a trolley car in front of the building
with the wording of Atlanta Rapid
Transit written on the side of the
car. ART Station has programs
serving more than 50,000 patrons
and students each year.
In addition to Stone Mountain Park

and the ART Station, the city has
many unique small businesses,
biking trails and local parks for
residents and visitors to enjoy. The
city is also home to Stone Mountain
Elementary School, Champion
Middle School and Georgia Military
College.
