Final Examination: Human Elective

2016
Id like to point out that my evaluation of the various
artworks presented is highly subjective obtained through
information using the different theories of famous
philosophers discussed throughout this semester.

Waxworks can be traced way back on the 15th century and is still noticeably well
practiced during present times. Within these periods, the use of wax modelling has
varied from one thing to another. During the Middle Ages, the practice of wax
modelling was used for superstitious beliefs, witchcraft and the likes. It was on
Renaissance period when wax modelling took a high importance as a form of art
when most portrait figures and religious and mythological scenes in colored wax
pioneered. Today waxworks became totally popular since it usually consist of
images of historical or notorious personages in which sometimes mechanism is
fitted to give motion to the figures. Waxworks are frequently made and presented
by contemporary artists who take advantage of its lifelike and uncanny qualities.
Sculpture is a form of visual art. This implies that the appreciation of this type of
art would be based mostly on what the eyes could perceive.
This is one of the example of waxwork sculpture,

One thing certain is the realistic qualities of the artwork which exemplifies
the beauty and form of a human body. I think it is safe to say that the genre of the
subject matter of the artist includes frankness in the treatment of the human body,
nudity and sensual subjects. The artist had put effort in elaborating the very details
of a humans physique which makes me consider the artistic representation of the
artwork. However, there are specific information that are lacking or not given - like
the title of the waxwork or the name of the artist himself/herself responsible for
such a fine art - which could be considered in understanding the artwork. I believe
these have an effect on the opinion of a person by providing additional knowledge
in the work. The waxwork could broadly mean a lot of things and it would have
been clearer and narrowed down if only the idea and intention of the artist were
revealed.
Due to the realistic form of the artwork, Ive sensed an essential element
that captures a viewers interest. First of all it epitomizes the natural emotion,
mood, reflexes and state of a human body in distinguished circumstances that with
just an observation on the sculpture, youll be drawn to what it represents. Take for
example the picture of a waxwork above. Looking at the sculpture, I feel the
heaviness of the breathing it portrays as it plunges into a deep sleep maybe from
fatigue or stress that can be inferred in the lines and frowns shown on its face. Its
sharp resemblance to a real sleeping man is truly exemplary because the artist
succeeded in capturing the scenario in a most striking way by bringing life to the
waxwork itself.
Representationality is clearly present in the practice of this artwork and has
an important role in it. Although it is not really a sufficient condition for art, it still
has power to engage the viewers attention and emotions as it makes them think
of the artwork as if it were real.
Another factor that adds to the realistic effect of the waxwork was the use of
a three dimensional medium.
Although the artists reason for this art was not disclosed, as a product of art
it conveys a message that nonetheless invites a focus of thought. And this is my
line of thinking for this particular art.

Dance

So You Think You Can Dance Lacy and Danny: Keep

Holding On
The dance performance of Lacy and Danny is a form of performing arts and it
portrays a specific ballroom dance called Viennese waltz with a touch of modernity.
It was a mixture of fast-paced intimate movements that depicts romance and
contemporary movements of modern period. Work of art in dance are expressive in
nature that shows the audacity of the varying levels of feelings or emotions.
What captures my interest in this artwork is the use of lively movements and
a promising song. It made the expression for the intended meaning of the
performance more effective. The dancers played a part on a scene where truly
they wanted to secure a votive not to be in vain. The promises they gladly and
enthusiastically upholds shows explicitly as the dancers waltz across the stage
the promise for a love to overcome all the struggles faced. Their message was well
delivered.
Artwork is a product of experience. And dance is one medium of art that has
applied both of these essential elements. In the given example I believe that
romance is the driving force that initiates the concept of the performance, thereby
the experience element, and the constructed dance moves are the product of this
experience.

One can also behold the beauty of this performing arts in its relevance to the
society. Performing arts not only benefits the artist by the freedom of expression it
also disciplines the members or dancers into a well-rounded people. It was shown
in the example video clip, the rigorous training a dancer would undergo in
achieving such a master piece. And yet even under pressure they still manage to
enjoy their experience; a very optimistic outlook in life leads to a better one. This is
a good model in honing the young minds.

The given painting for evaluation.

The artist used a landscape canvass to paint his interest in nature which
according to him was the easiest subject for a beginner. It was the artists intention to
provide aspiring beginners with a procedural sample of painting through his video. His
efforts in explaining the details of every procedure was comprehensible that a viewer
would understand the right way of holding the brush, the right pattern of the strokes
and the right play of colors. It was the end product or the outcome of the painting that
made his intention well relayed. A beautiful artwork was formed from the simplest
ways using the least tools. What Ive learned from this video though is that, a person
who has enough passion need only the little most of what he got to be able to make
something beautiful, with a meaning, out of it.

The artists skill in painting this scene of nature with so much vibrancy that the
sense of life is clearly envisaged, is very commendable. I am able to deduce from this
painting a link between man and humanity as it portrays a symbolic figure for life.
Nature is very connected to man as man is also considered one with nature. As art,
according to Tolstoy, is not only transmission of feelings and emotion like a man
causing another man to yawn when he himself cannot help yawning, it is also a part of
something greater which emphasizes the whole of humanity. By the means of colors,
gradients, strokes, patterns and forms formed the communication of intention
attached to the artwork was a success. The communicative success and arrangement
of artistic materials contributed to the cause that made this painting draw so much
attention.

The Kiss
Gustav Klimt

A perfect square, the canvas depicts a couple embracing, their bodies entwined
in elaborate robes decorated in a style influenced by both linear constructs of the
contemporary Art Nouveau style and the organic forms of the earlier Arts and Crafts
movement. The work is composed of conventional oil paint with applied layers of gold
leaf, an aspect that gives it its strikingly modern, yet evocative appearance.
Human beings find various visual appearances to be deeply absorbing. That is
why when encountering something of beauty it is in our inherent instinct to want to
experience it more or continue experiencing it. The things that attract us are given
artistic merit as we consider it having distinguished meaning from its beauty.

In the painting I see a tender affection depicted from the tight embrace of the
man to the woman. The woman here is not only the object of desire of the man but
also, I believe, is the protagonist as her face was the one distinctively illustrated. Their
intimacy was exemplified by the overall geometrical form of their bodies. The pattern
shows that their surrounding dissolves as they became too engrossed with their affair.
And the touch of gold adds to the splendor of their romance and illuminates the whole
manuscript.
The painting expressed the stage of human relationship where the parties
involved are first drawn to the beauty of the bodies. A physical wanting which is
present in all level of affection. The artist has successfully entranced the audience
attention with the view that deepens the products intentional meaning. It contains the
representational beauty of romantic relationship.

Season of Song The Prayer

A powerful invocation held by the most cunning voices throughout the world,
one of which was Charice Pempengco. Naturally as this song was written as a prayer
which is a holy act of conversing to the Most High, it holds a purposeful message. The
act of relaying this message through a song was so compelling due to the use of
differing tones of great artist and the way it was performed.
The song was written by David Foster and was originally sang by Celine Dion
and Andrea Bocelli. It was performed by the original singers in a solemn way that
would send chills all over your spine. Now it was delivered by Charice Pempengco and
the CanadianTenors with the song arrangement altered by the song writer himself. The
delivery was with so much power it compelled one to yield with the message.
The point of origin of the song helped in orienting, balancing and organizing the
structure in creating the new arrangements. The performance is still considered a
great performing arts having its own originality despite the fact that it was formerly
performed by other famous artist. Its relevance was not diminished just because it was
a revision of the original. In fact it magnified the beauty of and added a classical
quality to the song. This is a great artwork that connects audience with the religious
belief of a particular group of people.

Film

Haevnen In a Better World

Anton is a doctor who commutes between his home in an idyllic town in
Denmark, and his work at an African refugee camp. In these two very different worlds,
he and his family are faced with conflicts that lead them to difficult choices between
revenge and forgiveness. Anton and his wife Marianne, who have two young sons, are
separated and struggling with the possibility of divorce. Their older, ten-year-old son
Elias is being bullied at school, until he is defended by Christian, a new boy who has
just moved from London with his father, Claus. Christian's mother recently lost her
battle with cancer, and Christian is greatly troubled by her death. Elias and Christian
quickly form a strong bond, but when Christian involves Elias in a dangerous act of
revenge with potentially tragic consequences, their friendship is tested and lives are
put in danger. Ultimately, it is their parents who are left to help them come to terms
with the complexity of human emotions, pain and empathy.
The film enlightens audience to the beauty of the universal substrate of
humanity. It is an adventure in a world that presents struggles of a risky friendship,
marriage and other relationships that buds throughout the movie. The film draws the
feeling of anticipating what lies ahead of all the loneliness, frailty and sorrow that
engrossed the protagonists in the story.
I consider this a successful artwork since it is in my judgment that the most
effective way to convey a message, to relate an emotion, and to acquire intended
reaction from the audience is through triggering the use of the various senses that
help acquire unique understanding which will awaken varying emotions. Issues of
poverty, scarcity, injustices such as murder, bullying, and parents getting divorced and
its effect to the children were the message of the movie intended for the viewers.
Responding to it accordingly comes in naturally for me. It was really commendable as
it helps deepen the understanding of a person in the ways of the world and the works
of a man. It clarifies to a person that social constructs contrast with different
communities and societal norm and this film is the means that connects us from our
worldly differences. What we perceive in this movie may vary and thus we may
formulate differing opinions but as long as we are informed we are still connected in
this unified experience. With all of this considered, this movie is classified as a great
artwork.
