30th /31st DECEMBER 2016

Dear Parishioners,

FEAST OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

On this 1st January 2017, we celebrate the Feast of Mary, Mother of

God. We can begin the New Year well by dedicating the year ahead to the
protection of Mary, our Mother. We can repeat the blessing from the first
reading and perhaps use it often as a prayer for ourselves, our families and all people.
May the Lord bless you and keep you,
May the Lord let his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord uncover his face to you and bring you peace.
What is beautiful prayer of blessing! Todays gospel is a continuation of the Christmas
story. Mary is at the centre. St Luke tells us that the shepherds came to the stable; found
Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus. When they saw the child they repeated what they had
been told about him (by the Angels) As for Mary, she treasured all these things and
pondered them in her heart. Mary listened to the shepherds; they would not have a very
high rating of intelligence by societys standards yet, Mary treasured, pondered and took
seriously their message.
We need to do likewise. We hear the Word of God; we hear the bible stories again and
again we need to ponder, reflect and think and pray deeply for an understanding of Gods
message to us. We can never hear it often enough.
Today, we have a PASTORAL LETTER for Marys Feast. Cardinal Vincent has a lovely
message. He speaks of his own Mum with great affection and intimacy. He speaks of every
mother and her child. This give us a sense of Mary the Mother of God and our mother He
writes: This then is how we best set out into the New Year: with the Spirit of Jesus in our
hearts; with the prayer, Abba Father on our lips; with Mary holding her mantle of protection
and love over us all. Then we shall walk steadily, never losing the poise of grace, and always
confident of who we are in the eyes of our loving Father; precious sons and daughters.
(Copies of the full text available).
A word on Irelands Fittest Family: This is a family contest organised by Irish
Television, RTE. Families of four compete. This year 60 families entered the competition. At
an early stage, 12 families were selected. My nephew, Jim Cummins, his sons Henry and Mark
and daughter, Ciara worked their way into the final. The contests took place in army assault
courses locations and other challenging disciplines. The final was shown on December 18th .
All our family gathered to see who would win out of the last three finalists. Guess what, my
nephew won!! What an evening of celebrations we had. It was just magnificent and
wonderful to be there.
Best wishes,
Fr Joe
