7 Resume Trends That Make a Real Difference

Posted on February 19, 2016 by Lisa Rangel

Even though were barely done saying Happy New

Year, 2016 has already shown us new and innovative
ways to write, present and leverage resumes.
In addition to an eye-catching design layout,
achievement-driven bullets and strong word choice to
define your brand (as demonstrated in these resume
samples) these 7 resume trends will help you ensure
you are ahead of the competition and viewed as
more-than-ready to take on your next role.

1. Customize for the Audience AND the

Position
When sending a resume to a third party recruiter, your
primary goal is to motivate them to send your resume to their client. When sending your resume
directly to a hiring manager, though, you need to address how you will create results for them and
make their life more productive by hiring you.
Factor this perspective in when sending your resume to a corporate recruiter or through an
employee referral. Ask yourself, What is their motivation to take the next step with me?.

2. Make it Easy for Readers to Digest Your Information

White space, white space, white space!
Cramming content in multiple, information-dense, multi-lined paragraphs with little white space is
enough to make a reader go, Next! Make it easy for your readers to find information using
bullets, sectioned off information chunks and simple graphics to move the eye through the
document. Once their initial scan shows youre providing what theyre looking based on
requirements, theyll take a deeper dive.

3. Lead with Your Achievements

Put your best foot forward!
Leading with your accomplishments early in the summary and in the employment sections is now
a critical step for your resume. In todays employment marketplace with shrinking attention spans,
you must lead with the strongest first impression in the summary: your crowning, most relevant
achievements. This will keep the reader engaged in 5-10 second increments and motivate them to
keep reading.

4. Treat Your Resume as Your Personal Marketing Tool

Just like your business card or biography on a company webpage, your resume is an extension of

your personal brand. Update your resume often. Note the classes and certification programs
youve completed recently. Update to reflect a new soft skill or achievement. And use job
descriptions and industry news to upgrade keywords.
If your resume goes stale so does your job search.

5. Speak to Benefits, Not Just Your Experience

Do not lead with years of experience if you want to be hired on merit.
For example, I have reduced operating expenses by 23% in six months is much more interesting
to an employer versus your stating, I have 3 years experience in retail. While the latter elicits a
yawn and a so what, the former piques an eyebrow and leaves the person wanting to see where
else youve made a real impact. And, it helps them see you in the role they are hiring for now.

6. Align Resume Content With Online and Mobile Profiles

The resume is no longer a compartmentalized document; its not the only way someone can find
you. Nor should it be.
Ensuring your resume is in alignment with your branded.me page, LinkedIn profile, twitter account,
blog, and other social media pages pertinent to your field is paramount. A hiring manager may find
your work on your personal blog, but when they reach out to ask for your credentials and you send
your resume, it must be well aligned with every other way the employer can find you. Authenticity
is everything.

7. Use the Resume Writing Process for Personal Branding

Dont use the resume writing process for just another resume. Use what youve learned!
The accomplishment-gathering process and personal branding development needed to write a
resume also applies to creating a personal bio, elevator pitch, social media bios, etc. Take
everything youve learned while writing your resume and present a clear, quantified value
proposition. Employers will notice!
Use these 7 trends when creating the newest version of your resume theyll make a real
difference in your job search, and youll get the interview!
