Synopsis

Semester I and Semester II

Course
Objectives

This course covers topics on basic linear algebra, equations, inequalities,

functions and their graphs, polynomial and rational functions, analyzing
graphs, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of linear equations
and matrices.
The objectives of this course are to:
1. apply mathematical terms, notations, principles and methods.
2. analyze, interpret and make mathematical decisions.
3. apply algebra and functions in the field of science, technology and
social management.
4. develop understanding of mathematical concepts, applications and
skills to analyze and solve problems so that students have a strong
foundation to pursue studies in Biological and Physical Sciences,
Medical, Pharmacy, Allied Health Sciences, Nursing, Dentistry and
ICT programmes.

Learning
Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. identify real numbers and equations, and apply these concepts to solve
mathematical problems.
2. interpret functions and their algebraic equations into graphs using
transformation method.
3. identify and analyze graphs of polynomial and rational functions.
4. determine real and complex zeros of a polynomial function.
5. identify properties of exponential and logarithmic functions and solve
problems using these functions.
6. solve system of linear equations using row operations, determinants of
matrices and inverse matrices (using row operation and adjoint
method).
