After having a discussion with my group members, I decided to do a pop-up backdrop

as my learning kit. This learning kit incorporates the elements of visual arts and movement.
All the materials that I used to do my learning kit were materials that I can find around. The
material I used to do my backdrop was polystyrene, manila card, oil pastels, watercolour,
satay sticks and some papers.
The two theories that I included in doing my learning kit was Multiple Intelligences
Theory and the Hoka Hoki Theory.
Howard Gardner proposed the existence of a number of relatively autonomous
human intelligences. He defined intelligence as the capacity to solve problems or to fashion
products that are valued in one or more cultural settings and detailed a set of criteria for what
counts as a human intelligence in the year 1983. With that, he came with the table of seven
intelligences.

Table of Seven Intelligences (Gardner, 1983)

I incorporated spatial intelligence and bodily-kinaesthetic intelligence in my learning

kit. When presented the learning kit, the students can visualize and imagine the places
shown in the backdrops. Students can also learn to handle the pop-up backdrop when they
are given the opportunity to handle it.
The right hemisphere of the brain was my focus as a part of the Hoka Hoki Theory.
The creativity and arts element were one of my focuses for this learning kit.
The biggest problem that I faced was that I actually did not know how to do pop-ups. I
have seen many interesting pop-up storybooks before but I never knew how it was made.
So, I decided to surf the internet to learn how to do pop-ups. On YouTube, there were many
tutorials on how to do these pop-ups. I picked the simplest tutorial and practiced doing it
many times. Then, I decided to incorporate it in my learning kit as I can do it.
The next problem that I faced was that I could not draw very well. I needed to draw
my pop-up picture but I do not master the drawing skill. After a few trials, I almost gave up in
drawing. So, I turned to my partner, Elvatasha, for some help. She helped me to draw the
paddy field pop-up. I observed her drawing and learnt a few techniques from her like not to
grip the pencil too hard and to colour freely. I tried to apply these techniques in drawing and
colouring my other pop-ups and it was successful. Adding to the main pop-ups, I added
smaller pop-ups that can be put while the story is told. I made the smaller pop-ups by sticking
printed pictures of pumpkins, tomatoes and Sabahan delicacies onto satay sticks.
I also helped Elvatasha in selecting her materials to be used as the musical
instruments. After we both listened to some of the music that she decided to use for the
performance, I suggested a few materials that she can use as her musical instruments.
From time to time, I checked with my groupmates with their progress. Since we
decided to do a short storyline as the flow for our performance, I did the script. I read through
the history of the infamous festivals and incorporated it as a part of the script.
We decided to do a full rehearsal on the day before the performance. During this
rehearsal, we did all the necessary fixes and amendments. We also divided our roles for the
performance. I was the storyteller. So, I had to practice the flow of our story and script for a
few times and my groupmates were my critiques. They corrected me whenever necessary. It
was really fun working together as a group.
From the experience of doing this learning kit, I learnt two important lessons. The first
lesson is that when I do something, I should put effort in doing it. I should make sure of it as
putting effort in doing something will gives us the best outcome as a product. Secondly,

teamwork is important in group work. I realised that when a group of people do something
together, the product is better than of an individual work.
On the day of the performance, we got some positive and comments that can help us
improve.
The comments that can help us improve were unclear voice modulation and use of
some difficult words. Since I was the one talking, I should teach myself to speak clearer and
louder. I should also not use difficult words but actually, I added a few difficult words and
explained the meanings to expose the students with new vocabulary.
The other comments were about the use of tiny props. I will make sure not to do tiny
props next time so that all the students will have a clear view of what is presented.
The last is that we, as a group, took a long time to set up the learning kit. It was
because we were quite nervous and that made us hectic. In future, we will learn to be more
composed so that our lesson in future will be successful and not hectic.
I hope to make suitable learning kits in future when I become a teacher and I hope
making this learning kit will help me many ways to do other learning kits in future.
