Generally no but this varies by State. Social Security Numbers,
drivers histories (unless convicted of crime), marriage, divorce
records and banking information are sealed unless you obtain a
court order. UNITE HERE was successfully sued a few years
ago for taking license plate numbers from cars securing the
registered owners information and then contacting those
individuals at their homes for organizing purposes.

What is the best place to find out about people and companies?

The county clerks office in the jurisdiction where the individual

lives or the company is located. As we discussed earlier more
and more records offices are making their public records
available online. Unfortunately many (particularly smaller
counties) records are not available online, you may have to use
a public terminal at the clerks office or actually request a hand
search by office staff.
