Main Idea :

The nation that chooses to be under

God is the nation that is blessed and
prospered, the nation that doesnt is
judged.

Objective : To challenge members to teach their

children and grand children that our
nation was founded by Christian men,
who believed the Christian religion and
who enshrined its essence and heart into
the structures of our nation.

One Nation Under God

Psalm 33:1-22
This is the weekend that we celebrate the birth of
our nation. In a letter to his wife, Abigail, John Adams,
our 2nd President wrote concerning July 4th, 1776...
[This day] ought to be commemorated as the
day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion
to God Almighty.
Did you hear that my friends... Sounds more like a
worship service, than a glutenous, rowdy, bear drinking
party that some 4th celebrations have become.
The Revolutionary War was costly... what war
isnt? Costly in terms of the great sacrifice in loss of
life, costly in the loss of homes and crops, costly in the
investment on the part of many their private and
individual wealth to the effort...
Mike Glen in an article in this months copy of
Mature Living, (hold up a copy) which by the way, you
should be getting and reading, wrote... The men and
women of 1776 werent professional soliders. They
were farmers, carpenters, silversmiths, printers, and
shop owners. They brought their own weapons and
were constantly short of supplies and ammunition.
Most of the time, they were outnumbered by the most
powerful army at that time... but... they fought anyway.
They were men and women who loved freedom more
than their own lives and were willing to fight for that
freedom. Our nation was born out of their sacrifice.

And yet, after all of that sacrifice and commitment,

the task of creating structures that would honor this
great commitment, these incredible sacrifices lay before
the founders.
With the war now behind, a Constitutional
Convention was convened... Tragically, over weeks and
weeks of discussion, debates and intense arguments, no
real progress had been made. In The Records of the
Federal Convention, as recorded for us by James
Madison, dated June 24th, 1787, we read on pages 450452 the following speech made by Benjamin Franklin,
one of the most noteworthy of our founders, and I
quote, Mr. President
The small progress we have made after 4 or five weeks
close attendance & continual reasonings with each
other---our different sentiments on almost every question,
several of the last producing as many nays as ays, is
methinks a melancholy proof of the imperfection of the
Human Understanding. We indeed seem to feel our own
want of political wisdom, since we have been running
about in search of it. We have gone back to ancient history
for models of Government, and examined the different
forms of those Republics which having been formed with
the seeds of their own dissolution, now no longer exist. And
we have viewed Modern States all round Europe, but find
none of their Constitutions suitable to our circumstances.
In this situation of this Assembly, groping as it were in
the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to
distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened,
Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly
applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our

understandings? In the beginning of the Contest with G.

Britain, when we were sensible of danger we had daily
prayer in this room for the divine protection.-Our prayers,
Sir, were heard, & they were graciously answered. All of us
who were engaged in the struggle must have observed
frequent instances of a superintending providence in our
favor. To that kind providence we owe this happy
opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of
establishing our future national felicity. (Something that is well
pleasing and well chosen) And have we now forgotten that
powerful friend? or do we imagine that we no longer need
his assistance?
I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the
more convincing proofs I see of this truth that God Governs
in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the
ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can
rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the
sacred writings, that "except the Lord build the House they
labour in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also
believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in
this political building no better, than the Builders of Babel:
We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our
projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become
a reproach and bye word down to future ages. And what is
worse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate
instance, despair of establishing Governments by Human
wisdom and leave it to chance, war and conquest.
I therefore beg leave to move-that henceforth prayers
imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on
our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning
before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the
Clergy of this City be requested to officiate in that

From this point forward, progress was made and

the most incredible Constitution that has ever been
drafted, was formulated and ratified!! This hardly
sounds like the quote of a man that didnt want
anything of God and the Bible in our government...
Patrick Henry, a Great and Godly Virginia
Statesman is quoted as saying... It cannot be
emphasized too strongly or too often that this great
nation was founded not by religionists but by
Christiansnot on religion but on the Gospel of Jesus
Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths
have been afforded asylum, prosperity and freedom of
worship here.2
Some question the validity of that quote... But, the
same sentiment is confirmed by our 2nd President.. John
Adams as her writes, leaving me to reason to doubt the
prior quote: John Adams wrote...
The general principles upon which the Fathers
achieved independence were the general principals of
Christianity I will avow that I believed and now
believe that those general principles of Christianity are
as eternal and immutable as the existence and

attributes of God.3
Couple that with James Madisons the one who
copied down Franklins speech, standing himself to take
the floor and presenting that the new government
should contain three branches, Executive, Legislative
and Judicial, a structure that he discovered from, I
quote, the Perfect Governor, as he read Isaiah 33:22;
Let me read that verse.
Isa 33:22 For the LORD is our judge, The LORD is
our lawgiver, The LORD is our king; He will save
us-For the LORD is our judge, (Judicial System)
the LORD is our lawgiver, (Legislative Branch)
the LORD is our king; (Executive Branch)4
And so we come together today, 239 years after the
Declaration of Independence was signed, 229 years
after our Constitution was ratified, and the haunting
answer of Franklin to a lady who asked him... Dr.
Franklin, what kind of Government did you give us...
and he replied... A republic madam, if you can keep it
And we are faced for the first time in our nations
history with that question... can we keep it....
Well... turn with me today to the book of the
Psalms and lets look at Psalm

Wow... Wow... Wow... Did you catch vs 12... Blessed is
the nation whose God is the Lord, The People whom He
has chosen for His own inheritance.
In our Pledge of Allegiance, written by a Baptist
minister, Francis Bellemy, who sadly got captivated by
a Social Gospel message that apparently moved him to
socialism, did not included any reference to God in his
original pledge. But by the providence of God,
numerous individuals and groups would work to
include that most important phrase Under God, in our
Pledge, in 1954, President Eisenhower, pushed for the
addition of that phrase after a sermon by Rev. George
MacPherson and on flag day, June 14, 1954, it was
signed into law.5
One Nation Under God... May I say this morning,
that the only way a Nation can REALLY be One is
under God... Even our Constitutional Convention
couldnt get their act together without, as Benjamin
Franklin stated, a superintending providence of God.
And so, I have entitled our message today, One Nation
Under God. Consider 4 thoughts..

The Power of Being One Nation Under

Look back at Psalm 33:4-9 in particular. We see here

that the Word of God is upright and faithful, that means
we can trust it! It can be the guide and anchor for our
life, and if that is true, for our family and if that is true
for our community, our state and our nation! But not
only is His Word trustworthy, it is powerful... vs 6
reminds us that it is by the power of the Word of God
that the world was formed and all things that are, were
made. We read in Heb 1:3
And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact
representation of His nature, and upholds all things
by the word of His power. When He had made
purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand
of the Majesty on high,
For those of us who are Christians, who have
studied Gods Word, who have experienced His life
changing presence and power, it seems a moot point to
consider the Power of the Immutable God and what that
can mean to a nation and DID mean to THIS nation in
our not so distant past!
And yet, in the United States of American, after
only a half century of targeted attack on the

fundamental values and principles upon which this

nation was founded. It HAS become the point that we
must once again make!
Our founding fathers believed that it was to God
that we should turn for our help in times of crisis and
struggle, it was a early presidents that determined that
we should have a day of Thanksgiving to God in our
nation! We have worked so very hard to leave out the
GOD Part!! And so we have raised multiple
generations that dont think that activity and court
decisions that promote that activity are a problem!
Listen friends, these verses are very clear that we
should praise and give thanks to God! That we should
fear the Lord God! And why is that??? Vs 4
(4) For the word of the Lord is upright and all His
work is done in faithfulness... The middle of vs 5
says, The earth is full of the lovingkindess of the
lord.
And what is that lovingkindness in the earth? It is the
amazing sunsets, the cool breeze, a crisp snowy
morning! It is apples and pears, and cherries,
pinapples, blue berries, mangos, kiwi and oranges! It
is Coco Beans and String Beans, it is peas and carrots
and corn and squash and watermelon and cantelope!
It is roses, and daffodiles, tulips and violets, daiseys
and lillies... HELLO!!!! It is the very air that we
breath!!!
We should stand in awe of who He is and what He
has done. His power is such that no one can thwart what
He plans, and that it is He Himself who can and will

confound the plans of man, when they are in

contradiction to His! Forgive us O God... Forgive us!
( Pause )
And yet, it is as if we have no fear of God in our
nation today! The signs on the back of countless
pickup trucks and car windows, declare, NO FEAR
How foolish! How ludicrous!! For beloved, the
bravest soldier will tell you that fear heightens the
senses, causes the body to surge with adrenaline,
strengthens, quickens and moves us to feats beyond
normal ability! To claim, NO FEAR is shear
stupidity and a lie to ones self. O... you may be able to
learn to control the response to fear, but everyone...
everyone fears, even if they hide it! I see kids walking
in the streets in neighborhoods, just daring you to hit
them. Ok... Ok... I confess... When Im walking in the
flesh sometimes... I must confess that just as I get to
them, I blow the horn and watch them jump!! :o)
But even more, what has happened beloved, is we
have replaced the fear and awe of God with a foolish
arrogance, the discoveries of science and technology,
somehow thinking that God is no longer relevant. We
have become intoxicated with our own power, and
drunk on our technological prowess.... It may well
be that they have become our God, our idol.
We have for so long now seen the battle rage
against God, that even some so called Christians have
taken up the chant to expel God for public life! But
listen to me friends... Hear me...

God is still in control and though many choose

not to acknowledge Him, His will, His purpose and
His plan WILL Be Accomplished!
We have one of two choices... Be with Him, or be
against Him, there is no middle ground!
The passage says that God spoke and it was
done, He commanded and it stood fast!!
That means that God is not only All powerful
beloved.... but what He does can not be changed by
man, in fact, He Himself does not change, we say that
God is Immutable... that word means unchanging.
That is why His plans and Purposes can not and will not
be thwarted! The Psalmist rights..
Consider the following truths beloved.
1. Gods power is beyond the realm of this world, for
as this passage clearly states, a single word of His
mouth has more power than all that cumulative
power of man throughout mans entire history.
(Col 1:15-17 NASB) And He is the image of the
invisible God, the first-born of all creation. {16}
For by Him all things were created, both in the
heavens and on earth, visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or rulers or
authorities-- all things have been created by
Him and for Him. {17} And He is before all
things, and in Him all things hold together.
And yet, at the very same time
2. Gods Power is functioning in this world and
universe, the scripture says in
(Psa 145:14-15 NASB) The LORD sustains all

who fall, And raises up all who are bowed down.

{15} The eyes of all look to Thee, And Thou dost
give them their food in due time.
(Job 5:10 NASB) "He gives rain on the earth,
And sends water on the fields,
3. If that were not enough, Gods power extends even
into our very individual lives!!
Ezek 18:4 "Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of
the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine....
(Eph 2:10 NASB) For we are His workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God
prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
In the last 50 years the effort to paint the founding
of America as a secular effort, and to paint our Nation
as a Secular Nation have been unprecidented! In fact
one of the current books being used in our High
Schools is entitled, The Godless Constitution
In this blatant attempt to paint America as Secular,
the words of only two of the signers of the Declaration
of Independence are cited.
But when the preponderance of the public
documents, personal correspondence and even the
monuments and buildings we have built... they scream
that this is indeed, One Nation Under God!! When
the evidence is openly and honestly evaluated, it is
abundantly clear that the vast majority of those who
framed our nation and who ratified and literally signed
with their lives, the Declaration of Independence... they
were decidedly Christian!!

Nearly half of these men held seminary or bible

college degrees and there were numerous pastors.
NO WONDER AMERICAS FORM OF
GOVERNMENT HAS STOOD SO LONG!
And do you know what is sad, most Americans
dont even know what our form of Government is!! If
you asked the average American on the street, what is
our form of Government, they would say that we are a
Democracy. BAMP!!!!!! WRONG!!!!!!!
We are a Constitutional Republic!!
Listen beloved, if you base your government
structures on the Immutable God, upon His Word, His
truth and His Will, then it would stand to reason that
you would have something that is enduring, just like
our text says...
{11} The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The
plans of His heart from generation to generation.
This truth reverberates throughout the entire Bible
Beloved!!
Job 23:13 "But He is unique and who can turn
Him? And what His soul desires, that He does.
Isa 14:27 "For the LORD of hosts has planned,
and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out
hand, who can turn it back?"
Isa 43:13 "Even from eternity I am He; And there
is none who can deliver out of My hand; I act and who
can reverse it?"

Jer 4:28 "For this the earth shall mourn, And the
heavens above be dark, Because I have spoken, I have
purposed, And I will not change My mind, nor will I
turn from it."
Prov 19:21 Many are the plans in a man's heart,
But the counsel of the LORD, it will stand.
We find the same truths in the NT beloved...
John 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to
you, before Abraham was born, I am."
Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to
day, and for ever.
Rev 22:13 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the
first and the last, the beginning and the end."
Is it any wonder then why the Declaration of
Independence refers to God 4 times!!
It did so, because these men knew in the depths of
their being that without Gods intervention and
providential deliverance, there cause was a lost cause.
Is that not what Franklin said in his address to the
Constitutional Convention that I read you earlier?
Let me read it again...
In this situation of this Assembly, groping as it were in the

Like our founding fathers, we must not forget

who is in charge of this world. We must not ignore
whose providence and will is that which will ultimately
be accomplished! For if we do, then we will fall to the
depths of depravity that have sunk many a nation
throughout the history of the world.
America has been powerful! And it is because
we were founded on the truths and principles of the
one and only TRUE God, the God of the Bible!! The
God who is ALL powerful! And Whose Hand of
blessing and protection has CLEARLY been on this
land!!
Our ONLY Hope is to repent and to ask God to
help us retake this nation and turn it back to its clear
godly Christian Roots!!
But that starts with us... I wonder my friend... Is
what we are seeing here in America merely a reflection
of the ethical and moral slide that has occurred in our
individuals lives? Have we, Like our nation, embraced
the ungodly, the depraved, even the wicked things? Do
they have place in our homes and on our TVs...
As we have noted in these last weeks, 2 Chr 2:14 is
so very appropriate!!!
2Ch 7:14 If my people, which are called by my
name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek
my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will
I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and
will heal their land.
Will we?... Will We?....
Let us Pray...
