TAJUK / TITLE:
INDEPENDENT SCAFFOLD ERECTION, ALTERATION AND DISMANTLING
TUJUAN / PURPOSE:
This Information Sheet is intended to describe on tubular, modular and frame scaffold
so the trainee able to ensure the Independent Scaffold erected, altered and dismantled
safely and correctly.

PENERANGAN / INFORMATION:
1. INTRODUCTION
i) An independent scaffold consists of a double row of standards, with each row
parallel to the building. The inner row is set as close to the building as is
practicable.
ii) The distance between the lines of standards should be the minimum
necessary to accommodate the required number of boards and toe boards .

Diagram 1: Independent Scaffold

iii) This scaffold has 2 rows of standards that are tied by cross members called
transoms
iv) This scaffold doesnt rely upon the building for support
v) Suitable for use in conjunction with framed structures.

2. ADDING LIFTS TO SCAFFOLD

i) Scaffold erectors should work off two planks at all times.
ii) Note: Scaffold erectors are allowed to work from one plank; however, it is
recommended to use two.
iii) Braces must be lifted as scaffold is erected.
iv) Ties must be lifted and secured to scaffold as scaffold is erected and
dismantled.
v) Loading bays if erected must be with stand all loads imposed on it. The
erection of a loading bay must be separated from the working scaffold.
vi) Gin wheels if used must be hung by shackles or other approved methods.
vii) Handrails and stop ends must be erected to each level of scaffold as it is
viii)

built.
Mechanical means i.e. cranes; forklift, should be used over manual
handling wherever possible.

3. SAFETY CHECK FOR INDEPENDENT SCAFFOLD

3.1. Each night:
i) Ladders should be boarded up to prevent unauthorized access to the
scaffold.
ii) Lights should be placed so that the public are protected from accidentally
damaging either themselves or the scaffold, e.g.: by driving into it.
iii) Check that warning signs are in position.
3.2. Each morning:
i) Make sure that scaffold has not been interfered with, particularly by children,
and is safe for use.
3.3. Every week:
i) Statutory inspections must be made every week and after severe storms by
a 'competent person'.
3.4. When dismantling:
i) The order in which a scaffold is dismantled is not necessarily the reverse of
the order of erection. Generally, scaffolds should be taken down lift by lift and
not from one end to the other.
3.5. Hazard awareness:
i) Independent scaffolds are common use and often taken for granted. Whilst
independent scaffolds are straightforward to erect and use, carelessness can
result in accidents.

ii) An awareness of the potential hazards is essential if accidents are to be

avoided.

4. SAFE ERECTION, ALTERATION AND DISMANTLING OF INDEPENDENT

SCAFFOLD (TUBULAR)
4.1. Erection
Erection procedures should be such that an unstable is not reached at any time.
This applies to both low and high scaffoldings.
The ties for the scaffold should be fixed in place as the scaffold is erected and
reached each tie position. No portion of the scaffold should be used unless that
portion is fully checked, braced and tied.
4.1.1. Erection process
i)
Prepare plank/board and place base plate on top of the
measurements given.

4.2. Alteration
All alteration to existing scaffoldings should be carried out in such a way that the
stability of the scaffold is not impaired. As a general rule, supplementary
components should be added before those which have to be removed are
uncoupled and taken away.
4.2.1. Alteration process
i)
Open guardrail and toe board if it prevent entry process or material
goods.
According to the job requirements.

should be removed. If the scaffold is defective, it should be made

good before dismantling. The procedure for dismantling should
proceed generally from top in horizontal section. Scaffold should
never be dismantled in vertical sections from one end towards the
other.
ii) Materials should be lowered to the ground as the scaffold is
dismantled progressively. They should not be staked on scaffold.
Components should not be thrown down to ground; they should be
lowered hand to hand in an orderly fashion or brought down by crane,
gin wheel or other suitable means.
iii) When dismantling:
The order in which a scaffold is dismantled is not necessarily the
reverse of the order of erection. Generally, scaffolds should be taken
down lift by lift and not from one end to the other.
4.3.2. Dismantle process
i)
Open toe board with guardrail and go down to first lift. Open ties on
ladders.
