A. DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASS AND OF THE LESSON:


Level: Upper - Intermediate 1
Class: 10th Grade
Textbook: going for Gold
Type of lesson: teaching / learning

The pupils are receptive to the English language and to reading activities. They
tend to be reluctant to speaking as they find it rather difficult activating their
vocabulary knowledge and grammar structures. They need to be constantly
encouraged.
B. RECENT WORK:
The pupils have exchanged opinions on various discussion topics, they have learnt
phrasal verbs with make and expressions with do and make; they have worked on
revising grammar and vocabulary exercises.
C. OBJECTIVES:

to practise phrasal verbs with make and expression with make and do
to check students understanding of the meanings of the word act
to speak about students habits and preferences concerning the cinema and the
theatre
to discuss vocabulary related to cinema and theatre
to practise reading and to enrich students vocabulary
to refresh students memory about William Shakespeare
to practise the words related to cinema and theatre and to check the students
understanding of the text

D. CONTENTS
OBJECTIVE 1: (Estimated time: 8 minutes)
Context: practising phrasal verbs with make and expressions with make and do
Activity / class organisation: pupils were given as homework ex2/page 134 (they had to
complete it with the correct words) and a series of ten sentences which had to be
completed with either do or make in the correct form;

Aids: textbook, notebooks


Language: the verbs make and do, phrasal verbs with make
Possible problems: pupils may encounter problems in understanding the difference
between the various meanings of the phrasal verbs. The teacher makes sure to clarify
such doubts.
OBJECTIVE 2: (Estimated time: 7 minutes)
Context: presenting the title of the new lesson and the meanings of the word act
Activity / class organisation: pupils are asked to close their books; the teacher announces
the title of the new lesson and elicits the meanings of the word act from the students. If
students have problems doing this, the teacher will give examples from which the
different meanings should be inferred
Aids: blackboard, notebooks
Language: vocabulary related to the word act
Possible problems: pupils may have difficulties in telling all the meanings of act
OBJECTIVE 3: (Estimated time: 3 minutes)
Context: questions asked by the teacher
Activity / class organisation: pupils are asked to answer a few questions after
establishing the connection between the word art and the notions of theatre and cinema.
The students will give their preferences on either the cinema or the theatre, and the
reasons they made that choice

Possible problems: pupils may be reluctant to speaking in English; the teacher will
encourage them constantly and will provide the necessary vocabulary
OBJECTIVE 4: (Estimated time: 5 minutes)
Context: brainstorming words related to the cinema and to the theatre
Activity / class organisation: two pupils will come to the blackboard and write the words
related to the notions of cinema and theatre, those which are common for the two, and
also those which are specific to each of them

Possible problems: pupils may not know certain specific terms. The teacher will
encourage them to speak and provide them with the necessary vocabulary
OBJECTIVE 5: (Estimated time: 15 minutes)
Context: reading the new lesson and explaining the new vocabulary
Activity / class organisation: before starting to read the lesson, a pupil reads the headings
given at ex3, then the students take turns to read the lesson and after each paragraph has

been read, the students choose its appropriate heading; after each paragraph, the teacher
explains any new vocabulary
Aids: textbooks, notebooks

Possible problems: pupils might have problems pronouncing some words or numbers.
The teacher will help them read those words
OBJECTIVE 6: (Estimated time: 10 minutes)
Context: facts about William Shakespeare
Activity / class organisation: pupils are asked to match the information presented (dates
and names) with its significance; they will also be shown images relevant to
Shakespeares epoch
Aids: computer, projector

Possible problems: pupils might not know what certain dates signify
OBJECTIVE 7: (Estimated time: 2 minutes)
Context: practising the words related to cinema and theatre and checking the students
understanding of the text
Activity / class organisation: the teacher gives students their homework which will help
them practise the newly-learnt words and check their understanding of the lesson
