Reflection for Student Learning Outcome 3

SLO 3: Justify care recommendations when communicating and collaborating with an
interdisciplinary health care team based on informatics, information, and technology literacy;
current evidence-based practice and nursing research; and appropriate data and information
appraisal.
Instructions: Considering coursework completed throughout the RN to BSN program answer the
following the questions. (Your reflection should be a minimum of one paragraph, or 3-5
sentences, per question.)
1. The reason I chose this/these assignment(s) as evidence that I met the Student Learning
Outcome is: because this assignment showcases a child living with type 1 diabetes. We were
asked to watch a video of this child showing us how she lives with and manages her diabetes. In
this assignment, I was able to discuss what I felt about how this child was managing her disease
and at the same time provide some patient teaching just I would have if I were a nurse.
2. As a result of completing this coursework I have gained the following knowledge, skills,
and/or attitudes regarding this Student Learning Outcome: I have been able to understand better
the disease type1 diabetes as I have never had any exposure to this disease since I have only
worked with patients with type 2 diabetes. I have also gained knowledge in knowing how to
involve the patient(child) and parent when it comes to managing this disease through patient
teaching. I have gained knowledge knowing it is of great importance for my patient to know how
to manage this disease as that is the key when it comes to diabetes.
3. The way that I am going to incorporate this new knowledge into my practice is by: I will
make sure I become more proactive with patient teaching as I have learnt that many patients do
not really know how to manage diabetes. I will make sure that I provide important information to
my patient concerning how to manage diabetes. I also will incorporate this new knowledge to my
practice by making sure my patients have a proper understanding of how their medications work.
4. A future goal based upon this Student Learning Outcome is: to be able to comfortable discuss
issues of this disease with my patients. To also be able to collaborate with other health
professionals when it comes to managing diabetes so my patients can have appropriate care.
Lastly another goal would be to provide the best care possible to patients who have type 1
diabetes when I come across them.
