THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM

The unfolding of the story of the Incarnation continues today as the Church celebrates the Epiphany. The tale of the magi from the
East is one of the most fascinating in all of scripture. It has much to teach us about what we can come to expect, even in circumstances
and places that may seem insignificant or small. Bethlehem was a tiny town, what we might refer to today as a town without even one
stop light. Yet it is over this seemingly insignificant place that the guiding star stops in its own search for the place where the Savior
would be born. Too often we fail to recognize the fact that the star of Bethlehem comes to rest in our everyday lives, where we can
experience Gods presence, manifested in ever new ways. Epiphany calls us to shake off our stupor and recognize the One who comes
to save us.
Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This year, in the United States the celebration of the Epiphany falls on January 8, but the traditional date for the Epiphany is
January 6. The date we know as January 6 was established as the solstice in Egypt in 1996 BC, but the Egyptian calendar lost a full
day every 128 years. Twenty centuries later the actual solstice had migrated to December 25. People still kept January 6 for the
solstice celebration, but December 25, matching nicely with the Roman pagan feast of the Unconquered Sun, launched an
extended solstice holiday. By the time of the early church, the whole period of twelve days was celebrated just about everywhere.
Christians began to celebrate Christ as the true light of the world in four themes: the Nativity, the manifestation to the
Gentiles, the baptism of the Lord, and the wedding feast at Cana. That was entirely too much for one day to handle. A twelve-day
season was ready to be adapted, so Christians borrowed from the pagan calendar for their own season of light. Thus early Christian
celebrations of the Christmas season extended from one date for the solstice, December 25, to the older date, January 6. The
darkest time in the Northern Hemisphere could now be filled with the Christian observance of the arrival of the Light of the World.

CANONICAL- LITURGICAL FORUM

BY FR. GEM BANDIVAS, JCL, MBA, PhD

MASS INTENTIONS APART FROM THE SUFFRAGE FOR THE DEAD

Dear Father Gem: I noticed that all our Mass

intentions here at St. Peters are for the deceased. I would
like to know if the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass can also be
applied to intentions apart from the suffrage for the dead;
for example, so that God may bless an association, an
apostolate, or to overcome a moment of depression, etc.
to generate more revenue for the parish? Thank you for
considering my query.
Ernie, STPA Parishioner
Dear Ernie: Id like to make a categorical answer to your
query. Here at St. Peters, NOT ALL OF OUR MASS
INTENTIONS ARE FOR THE DECEASED ONLY. The priest
may offer up the Mass for intentions other than for the dead. I
think it is worthwhile to elaborate a little bit on this issue.
Mass intentions refer to the particular purpose for which
a specific Mass is being offered. This may be to honor God or
thank Him for blessings received, or for the intentions of
another person/s (such as on a birthday, anniversaries, etc.).
But technically speaking, however, a Mass intention simply
means that the sacrifice is offered for some person(s) living or
dead. Also called the application of a Mass, it pertains to the
ministerial fruits of the Mass. These fruits are both extensively
and intensively finite in virtue of the positive will of Christ.
Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical "Mirae caritatis" (1902)
beautifully elaborated this point and emphasized the
connection between the communion of saints with the Mass:
"The grace of mutual love among the living, strengthened and
increased by the sacrament of the Eucharist, flows, especially
by virtue of the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong to the
communion of saints.
In his encyclical "Ecclesia de Eucharistia," our beloved
late Holy Father, St. Pope John Paul II, taught, "In the
celebration of the Eucharistic Sacrifice, the Church prays that
God, the Father of mercies, will grant His children the fullness
of the Holy Spirit so that they may become one body and one
spirit in Christ (No. 43).
Whenever Mass is offered, there are three fruits derived
from the offering: the general (for the whole Church), the
special or ministerial (for the intention of the priest as minister),
and the personal (to each of the faithful, including the priest,
who participate, to each according to his disposition).
The intention for which the priest accepts a stipend is
not his personal intention but rather his intention as the priest,
that is, the minister of the sacrifice. He is to keep the offering
for only one Mass per day to avoid profiteering and other
abuses connected with Mass offerings (Canons 945-951).
Certainly, when a priest accepts a stipend to offer a
Mass he commits himself to celebrate a Mass according to the
intentions of the person making the offering. Justice demands
that he effectively offers the Mass. In order to do so he must
make some act of personal offering, at the very least uniting
his intention to that of the person who requested the Mass.

This intention is most often to

recommend the soul of a deceased
person but may also be for the
personal intentions of the living.
Practically any good and holy request can be made an object
of a Mass request.
In the Roman Missal the Church herself provides some
examples of possible intentions besides those offered for the
dead.
First of all, this is done in the ritual Masses in which
usually the celebrants intention is for those who are baptized,
confirmed, married, ordained, receive the sacrament of the
sick, take vows, or receive a ministry.
Second, there is the range of intentions found in the
Masses for various needs. Masses are offered for the Church,
the Pope or the local bishop, for their election during a Sede
Vacante, for a council or synod, for priests and the celebrating
priest himself, for ministers, for vocations, for the laity, on
anniversaries of marriage, ordination and profession, for the
unity of Christians, for reconciliation, for persecuted Christians
and for their oppressors.
There is also a wide range of civil intentions such as for
the nation, for those who hold public office, for seedtime and
harvest, for peace and justice and during wartime. Several
intentions refer to natural phenomena such as earthquakes
and storms.
Another series of intentions are for the forgiveness of
sins, chastity, charity, relatives, captives, prisoners, the sick,
the dying, for a holy death and for thanksgiving.
Think it is also necessary to mention that a priest who
celebrates any of the above Masses may receive a stipend for
a completely different intention. Likewise a priest may have
one of the above intentions and not celebrate the
corresponding Mass formula. For example, a person may
request a priest to celebrate a Mass for vocations on a day in
which the liturgy does not allow for this kind of celebration,
such as on a Sunday or during Lent.
The point I wish to make here is that the fact that the
missal offers such a wide selection of possible formulas
proves that the range of intentions for Mass is very broad
indeed. As I mentioned above, Catholics can request
practically any worthwhile or good and holy intention. The
examples of the missal also go to show what kind of intentions
can be considered good and holy.
For this reason there may be occasions when a priest
has to gently refuse a particular intention even if the request is
made in good faith and may be the object of personal prayer.
Requesting a Mass so that ones favorite team will win the
league would be one example. One could imagine the
quandary if the same priest were to be asked to intercede for
rival teams.

CALLING ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH!!!

St. Peters is beginning a Middle School Youth Group called MS ROUND UP on Sundays from 3:30pm-4:45pm. We will be serving light snacks, playing
games, doing arts & crafts, and all to engage you in building a relationship with Jesus Christ. The foundation of any good youth group is to help you understand the
true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, allow you to meet Jesus as your best friend that you can always turn to in prayer, and to better understand why Mary Mother
of God and Queen of Heaven is a mother to us all and we can turn to in need. Please join us Jan. 8 in the Faith Formation Complex rm 13 for our first MS ROUND
UP and parents are always welcome.
The HSYG will use an old form for its Life Nights. Through skits, talks, small groups, retreats, and conferences the high school students will engage in activities
to help them understand the Gospel is prevalent in our day just as it was 2000 years ago. The issues of peer pressure, bullying, abstinence, drug and alcohol use, teen
suicide and fitting in with others is taking on a whole new meaning in today's culture, but the one TRUE content is God loves us that He gave us life, and allowed His Son
Jesus to be persecuted and killed to save us. The Holy Spirit helps to guide us and through this youth group the high school students will learn ideas on how to guide them
in their journey to adulthood. By setting boundaries and living with those boundaries they can stay secure in themselves and even better help their friends and fellow man
and woman. In this youth group high school students will be shown how to live Christ-like in a world that hates or dismisses the truth of His existence. And through the
Holy Spirit their prayers can and will be answered. We invite the high school teenagers to take a leap of faith so they can gain knowledge, love, and mercy in their spiritual
journey. Life Nights begin promptly at 6:30pm and end at 8pm in Faith Formation rm. 13. Snacks will be offered before the Life Night begins.
If there are any questions about the youth groups please call Anthony Sperduti, Youth & Young Adult Servant Coordinator at 702.354.5960. In the near
future parents will be invited to Parent Outings with Anthony to discuss the teachings in the youth groups and an open forum with questions will be offered.
Young Adults: Monday nights the young adults 18 and out of high school to 35 are invited to take part in the program that will deal with Social Justice
issues, Issues of Concern for young adults like dating, marriage, college lifestyles, and the Catholic doctrine. Here young adults will find out just how important they
are to the church even though in the past young adults have been discounted by other priorities. Well in the past these young people came back to church to get
married, Baptize their children, and return to the faith. Well that is not happening anymore and more and more young people are deciding God isn't real, God is false,
or God was just a comic book hero. Lives and souls are at risk of eternal summation and the Catholic church can no longer ignore these 18-35 year old people. In the
Young Adult program that is yet to be named, young people will learn of the church's need for them in all ministries and callings to the church. Young people will
understand through this program that God the Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit are TRUTHS. Young people will be given examples on how to live a Christ-like
lifestyle at the workplace, in college, with family, and in the community. Young people are not the future of the church but they are the church. We pray that the
young people at St. Peter's church can hear the call of the Lord and respond. It will take you the parishioners to encourage the young people to live life for God and
not themselves. Please join us in praying for the young people and with your help and service the souls of the youth and young adults will understand how to truly
love and show compassion for each other and God.
If you are looking to help out in any way with these worthy and beautiful groups please contact Anthony Sperduti, 702.354.5960 or email
anthonysperduti@gmail.com.
