To prohibit the creation of an immigration-related registry program that classifies people on the basis of religion, race, age, gender, ethnicity, national origin, nationality, or citizenship.
 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLES.
3
This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Protect American
4
Families from Unnecessary Registration and Deportation
5
 Act of 2017’’ or the ‘‘Protect American Families Act’’.

SEC. 2. PROHIBITION OF CERTAIN IMMIGRATION-RELATED
1
REGISTRY PROGRAMS.

(a) P
ROHIBITION
.—Subject to subsection (b) and
3
notwithstanding any other provision of law, including sec-
4
tions 263, 265, and 266 of the Immigration and Nation-
5
ality Act (8 U.S.C. 1303, 1305, and 1306)—
6
(1) the Department of Homeland Security, the
7
Department of Justice, or any other Federal depart-
8
ment may not create or implement a law enforce-
9
ment or national security program that requires, or
10
has the effect of causing, people to register or check
11
in on the basis of religion, race, age, gender, eth-
12
nicity, national origin, nationality, or citizenship;
13
and
14
(2) consistent with the prohibition under para-
15
graph (1), no Federal funds may be used to create
16
or implement an immigration registry or check-in
17
program.

.—The prohibitions under subsection (a) shall not

apply to any Federal program that—
21
(1) merely collects and compiles data about
22
aliens entering or exiting the United States; or
23
(2) issues visas, grants United States citizen-
24
ship, confers an immigration benefit to nationals of
