GUIDELINES FOR BUILDING DRAWING

The main aim of the building drawing is to give sufficient information's by the
designer to the construction engineer. In order to give sufficient information's about
the building following views are generally drawn. (a)Plan, (b) Section and (c)
Elevation along any particular plane or several planes.

A building may be residential or public building. The plan, section along given vertical
plane and elevation gives the details of building.
Plan:
Plan of building represents a horizontal section of building at given height seen from top.
It is a general conventional to imagine that the building has been cut down by a horizontal plane
at the sill level of the window and is seen from the top after removal of so cut-part. The plan
shows the arrangement of rooms, Verandah or corrider, position of door, and window and other
openings along with their respective sizes. The dimension of the room indicated as Breath x
Length
In the case of Verandahs, the given dimension upto the end of Verandah retaining wall
and the position of beams, sunshades, portico, ventilators which are above sill level of window
are shown with dotted or broken lines. Line diagram is the sketch generally not drawn to
particular scale also known as line sketch. The relative positions of all elements like rooms, doors,
windows are clearly shown inside to inside. From the given specifications, the thickness of wall in
super structure shall be taken to draw the fully dimensioned plan to a convenient scale.
Section:
Section is also known as vertical section and sectional elevation or cross section. It is
imagined that a finished buildings is cut vertically along a line so that the building is separated
into two portions along the imagined vertical plane right from top of the building to the lowest
part of foundation. The view that can be seen while travelling along this imaginary vertical plane
when looking towards left is drawn to the same scale as that adopted for the plan. The line, which
is drawn on the plan to indicate the section, is called sectional line and represented by A-B or XX. The arrow heads shall be marked to indicate the way in which the sectional view is to be
drawn. In some cases offset is given to indicate the necessary details, but the offset is only to shift
the vertical plane from one position to another position as shown below. The necessity of the
section is to indicate all the vertical dimensions like, foundation details, basement, details of
flooring, height of super structure, sizes of doors, windows, cupboards, other openings, thickness
of roofing, width and depth of parapet wall, lintels, sunshades, portico and other details. All these
details are required to calculate the quantities of items of work and to execute the process of
construction.
Elevation:

Elevation or front view is the outward view of a completed building along any side of the
building. When a building is seen by standing in front of it, the view that can be viewed is known
as front elevation. Similarly backside view is called rear elevation or from any side of it which is
known as side elevation.
PLANNING PRINCIPLES
The planning should be functional planning which means designing a house on
function or requirements and not on some traditional style. While planning the following
points should be kept in mind.
a) A double storied building providing same floor area that of a single storey is cheaper by
about 15% to 20%.
b) A square plan is cheaper than oblong. The area occupied by walls of a square building
may be 15 % to 25% less than a rectangular plan.
c) A square plan makes a house compact. It makes the house cooler in summer season
and warmer in winter season since fewer walls are exposed. Hence a square plan is
always preferred.
Orientation of the building
Orientation of the house means fixing the direction of the building in such a way
that it derives the maximum benefits from the sun, air and nature. Man's health and
happiness are influenced directly by his environment. Faulty housing conditions
cause per health and spread of various diseases. Living in fresh air and exposing
condition cause poor health and spread of various diseases. Proper orientation of houses
increases the fresh air and sunshine in the house there by decrease the possibility of
direct infection.
i.
ii.

For perfect orientation all rooms, which are usually-used in daytime should be placed on
east and north side.
Bed rooms should be placed in the direction of prevailing wind.
If the orientation of the building becomes necessary in a particular direction the
following points should be considered for solar control in relation to exposure.

i.

East sun exposure is sustained and is too low to be controlled by wide overhangs. Early

ii.

sun is good but a portico in front of the building can control later part.
West sun exposure is short but intense. Since the sun is low in the sky, medium sized trees

iii.

may be planted in front of the building, which will shade walls and windows.
Northwest and northeast sun exposures are short and cool. Small trees, fences, louvers or

iv.

walls may be put for solar control.

Southeast, south and southwest sun is constant and intense, but high in the sky in
summer. A wide roof overhang provides sufficient control. On a southern exposure trees
should shade large expenses of concrete or other paving materials or other means to
minimize glare and heat buildup.

THUMB RULES FOR EFFECTIVE PLANNING

i.
ii.

Plinth:
Habitable rooms shall have minimum plinth height of 0.45mt. from ground level.

0.15 mts. upto a maximum of 3.00 mts.

In case of starred hotels, the width of the corridor shall be as per the authorized standards of the
starred hotels, whereas in case of residential dwelling unit occupied by single family and

iii.

constructed upto three floors width of the stairs shall not be less than 1.0 mtr.
In case of all non-residential and high rise residential buildings, the clear width of stair and

iv.
v.

lending exclusive of parapet shall not be less than 1.5 mts.

Minimum stair width for more than 6 tenements on each floor shall be 1.5 mts.
The stair-case & lifts (elevators) shall be so located that it shall be within accessible distance of
not more than 25 mts. from any entrance of tenement or an office provided on each floor.

vi.

The design of the lift & stair along with the tread and riser shall comply with the provisions of the

vii.

National Building Code for that class of building.

No winders shall be allowed except in case of individual dwelling unit.
Ventilation:
Ventilation of rooms: Every such room whether it is living room or a kitchen shall be
constructed that the same have for the purpose of ventilation :

i.

A Window or windows and /or ventilators clear of the Such frames, opening directly into an
interior or exterior open air space or into an open verandah or gallery abutting on such open air
spaces having an opening of not less than one tenth of the floor area of the room of an aggregate

ii.
iii.

opening of doors.
Window and ventilators of not less than one seventh of the floor area of the room.
Such aggregate opening in respect of setting room or dining room of three or more room tenement
may be provided either by window ventilators or doors. if such room abuts on an open verandah
or gallery
Roofs:
Effective drainage of rain water: The roof a building shall be so constructed or framed as to permit effectual drainage of the
rain water there from by means of ram water pipes at the scale of at least one pipe of 10 cm.
diameter for every 40 sq.m. of roof area. Such pipes shall be so arranged, jointed and fixed as to
ensure that the rain water is carried away from the building without causing dampness in any part
of the walls or foundations of the building or those of adjacent buildings.

Terrace:
Terraces shall be free from partitions of any kind and accessible by a common staircase
Parapet:
Parapet walls and handrails provided on the edges of the roof, terrace, balcony. etc. shall
not be less than 1.15 mts. from the finishing floor level and not more than 1.3 mts. Height above
the unfinished floor level Parapet construction shall be made of material and design, such that it
ensure optimum safety to the user/occupants of the building.
LOCATION OF ROOMS AND THEIR COMMON SIZES

Drawing or living room:

Drawing room is a common, comfortable and attractive place for sitting of
family members and to receive friends and guests. Sometimes it is used as a reception
room and dinning room on special occasions. It should be located in the middle of the
building and should be connected to the front verandah and dinning place. It should be
well lighted and ventilated. Its size may vary from 4200 mm x 4800 mm to 5400 mm to
7200 mm.
Bedrooms:
Bedrooms should be so located that they are well ventilated and at the same
time provide privacy. Generally they are located on the sides of the building so that at
least one wall is exposed for well ventilation and lighting. They should have crossventilation, if possible and should be exposed to the breeze for cool outside air to
come in. it should be located on the side of the prevailing wind direction. If good water
supply and drainage system is available, a bedroom should have attached bath and water
closet. Their size may vary from 3000 mm x 3600 mm to 4200 m x 480 mm.
Verandah:
The Verandah protects the walls of the house from being heated by exposure to
the sunrays. The best location for the verandah is south and west. The Verandah also
serves the purpose of a waiting room. It segregates the private apartment from the
entrance area. Verandahs have a width ranging from 1800mm to 3000 mm.
Office room:
It should be on one side of front Verandah, disconnected from other rooms.
Sometimes an office rooms serves the purpose of guest room and vice versa. Its size may
be 3000 mm x 3600 mm.
Dinning room:
Generally the dinning room should be provided in rear of the drawing or living
room and near the kitchen. In modern houses drawing room and dining room is kept
separate. Its size may range from 3600 mm x 4200 mm to 4200 mm x 4800 mm.

Kitchen:
The kitchen should be provided in the rear corner of the building but N.E.

corner is the best. It should be connected with the dinning room and should have
approach from outside also. The kitchen should be so located that morning sun comes in
to the kitchen at the time when it is used most. It should have windows for well
ventilation and chimney for smoke escape. The window space should be minimum of
15% of floor area. Storeroom and kitchen are provided together if less space is available.
Its size ranges from 2500 mm x 3900 mm to 3000mm x 4400 mm.
Store room:
It should be located near the kitchen and should have sufficient number of racks.
Its sizes may range from 2500 mm x 2500 mm to 3000 mm x 3000 mm.
Bath and water closet (W.C)
It has become a common practice to provide attached bathroom and W.0 with
each bedroom. If not attached to the bedroom and W.0 should be provided in rear of the
building separately so that the two can be used at a time. Good ventilation should be
provided for bath and W.C. there should be two windows in a bathroom, one for ventilation
at a height of 2000 mm, above outside ground level and other at the usual low level with
frosted glass shutters for admitting light and maintaining privacy.
Common sizes
i.
ii.
iii.

Bath and W.0 (combined) : 1800 mm x 1800 mm to 1800 mm x 2500 mm.

Bath (separate)
: 1200 mm x 1800 mm.
W.0 (separate)
: 1200 mm x 1200 mm.
SPECIFICATION:
Specification may be defined as written instruction/procedure describing in detail
the construction work to be undertaken. It provides a clear and concise description of the
material to be used and construction procedures to be followed for different items of work.
Normally following types of specifications are used
(i) General specification

(ii) Detailed specification

General specification
These include nature of the work, the qualities of materials and workmanship.
They form a part of the conditions of the contract.
Detailed specification
They specify the materials to be used, the workman ship to be followed and results

to be obtained. The specifications for items are written in the same serial order in which
the items are taken for construction. The specifications are in fact written to
supplement the information shown on the drawings and they cover features of the
work, which can be described in words. The specification serves the following purposes
i.

Contract document between the owner and the contractor describing their
responsibilities.
Guide to builders, enabling the estimators of the work to arrive at a fair price for the
work- involved.
Guide to supervisors, providing a guide for fabrication and installation of materials,
equipments and works.

After completing the plan of the residential building its elevation is drawn by having an
extension mode on the drafting setting dialog box by using OSNAP setting in status bar or by
using the command settings.
Elevation is drawn similar to plan, by using the line command.
After finishing elevation, cut section is drawn in the similar manner. After drawing the cut
section lines, hatching of brick work, concrete, sand filling, and floor finish are done by using
BHatch command.
Appropriate hatching style is selected from hatch or advanced and a preview is done.
If it is ok, then enter is pressed. If it is not ok esc is pressed and esc hatching is repeated again.
Before hatching dimensions are marked by using the leader command.
The arrow mark lines were drwn by leader command.
To maximize any part of the drawing room command is used.
Arc command is used to draw arc for the representation of door.
Erase command is used to erase any selected object
To maximize any part of the drawing room command is used.
Using save command the file having plan, elevation and section is saved by giving the
corresponding path name.

Result:
Thus the functional requirement of the residential building is planned and the plan, elevation,
section were drawn in AutoCAD 2016.

AutoCAD 2016
Command Used and Their Description:

Limits - reset the model space limits

Units Used to set the current format for units of measure.
Line Line commands allows creating a line where the end points allow creating a line where the

end points are dimensional co-ordinates.

Offset create a news object at a specified distance from an existing object or through a specified

point.
Trim trims off an object using cutting edges defined by other objects.
Break removes only a part of an object.
Arc Used to create an arc segment.
Methods are:

1. 3 Points,
2. Start, Center, End
3. Start, Center, Angle
4. Center, Start, End
5. Center, Start, Angle
6. Start, Center, Length
7. Center, Start, Length
8. Start, End, Angle
9. Start, End, Radius
10. Start, End, Diameter
11. Continue
Copy- Moves the selected objects from a given square to destination, learning a copy at the

originally selected location.

Rotate- rotate objects around a specified point
Move- moves object to the destination place from the source place
BHatch makes shaded patterns as matter of few picks and clicks away
Extend elongates an object to a boundary defined by other objects
Erase used to erase the unwanted objects
Text creates text object with specified height and orientation
Procedure:
The limits are set before starting the drawing. The lower left corner is set as default (0.0000,
0.0000). The upper right corner is changed as per our requirements.
By using units command, set the types as decimal/precision as 0.0000 and units to scale drag
and drop content as millimeters.
By using line command, the outer line of the plan is drawn with the required dimension
By using offset command, the outer line of the plan is drawn with the required dimension
By using offset command, the wall thickness of the plan is given as per requirements.
By using trim command the excess lines are trimmed.

By using line command, each member is drawn as per requirements.

The lines that cannot be trimed using trim command are eliminated by break command.
Using arc command, the inclined members are drawn as per the requirements of each member.
Using copy command, the members are copied if necessary multiply copy is used.
The section is drawn on the adjacent side of the elevation by extending the lines.
Using save command, the file having truss member in industrial building is saved by using
responding pathname.
