Documentary Proposal
Working Title
The real Cambridge

Log Line
Cambridge making theextraordinary ordinary

Treatment
History , culture , diversity.in other words boring and normal. I have grown up in
Cambridge my entire life and due to this i always heard and interpreted the words the
worlds your oyster to mean life starts outside of Cambridge and this meant that I always
neglected the life i always had but never experienced. But now I still find it a place of
history, culture and diversity but boring no and it is about as normal as an elephant on a
surfboard. Its the history and backstory that makes Cambridge a landmark but its the
bizarre that makes Cambridge brilliant.

Content
My video will be considered a U (universal) by the BBFC as it doesn't contain any
violence, drugs, sex or bad language.

Documentary Proposal
Synopsis
I am a 16 yer old girl born and raised in Cambridge and although I have an immense
appreciation for the pace i grew up i cant help but notice that this isnt the case for the
majority of youths living in and around Cambridge dont . Most adolescents i have met
seem to share the view that Cambridge is only its past and cant look past the old buildings
and museums that they find dull and lifeless. In this documentary I will be taking my subject
on a journey round there home city and showing them a side of Cambridge they have been
blind to; the one full of life and exciting culture and not just the city, of boring buildings
and the Tesco down the road, that they have been confined to live within. Its the
stereotypes of Cambridge that make a lot of resident youths want to leave and other tourist
youths avoid but in this short documentary I intend to change this and intrigue people into
sharing my passion of the city of Cambridge.
The start of the documentary will consist a interview style section of my subject and
explaining how they describe and view Cambridge before they go round the more
interesting parts of Cambridge and see Cambridge in a different light.
The middle section of my video will consist of my subject being taken around to parts of
Cambridge they have never seen before and being shown some of the parts of Cambridge
that they had once viewed as boring and vulgar in a different more interesting light.
The end of the documentary will mirror the beginning section of an interview style section
of my subject and explaining how they describe and view Cambridge after they have been
round Cambridge with the documentary and they will discuss how there opinions have
changed and the journey they have come on.

Character and personnel

The documentary only focusses on one subject as it is only a short documentary and it is
important for the audience to build a personal relationship with the subject as it will
keep them more interested in watching the documentary and it gives them someone to
sympathise with.

The subject will be around the same age as the audience 16/17 yrs old as it makes
the documentary more relatable for them.
The subject will most likely be male as male teens dont respond as well to females telling
them information as they do to males or as females do to males.
at the beginning of the video they will be being interviewed in a mid shot and will be being
asked questions about there views of Cambridge. Then he will be walking round
different parts of Cambridge learning new things and looking at other things in a
different light. For example, he will be visiting parks and sports clubs he never knew
about in Cambridge and will be reading out interesting facts and learning about the
places he thought were boring and at the end the video will reciprocate the
beginning with the same shot and view but he will have a a reformed opinion.

Documentary Proposal
Target audience
The target audience 1s middle class studying youths (both male and female) between the
ages of 15-23 that live in and around Cambridge or are looking for somewhere to visit on a
gap year.. They would be unemployed or might have a small part time job but this wouldn't
pay very well.
As my Target audience is those who are around the age of 15-23 therefor they would be most
likely be watching it in either an assembly as it would be sent around local schools around
Cambridge or it will be viewed on airplanes coming into Cambridge airport to target foreign
tourists coming to England on a gap year between 6th form and university or those students
who are coming from other countries such as USA or european countries such as Poland to
study over at Cambridge university to study.
My target audience is primarily male as I will be focussing on such areas as sports,
technology and creating interest in areas where the younger generation , especially males,
have lost it such as history and culture of Cambridge. Although, I understand that many
females would be interested in the topics my video would be discussing.

Style and genre

As it is a documentary it will have a formal structure and but it will have a fairly colloquial
tone to keep the feel of the documentary light and entertaining The documentary will have
a positive slant. This will be achieved by:

Keeping the topics light

Using upbeat music

Having an upbeat presenter/subject

Showing different lively activities and places, such as music, parks, theatres, skate parks,
different people

Shooting in daytime

As my target audience is teenagers so this short documentary that is roughly 10 minutes long
as people of this age tend to have a shorter attention span, so having a shorter documentary
that is is more varied might help to keep there attention.

Distribution and Marketing

Distribution and marketing:
As the program is targeted at youths living in the UK, it would be primarily distributed
through social media and youtube, as these are the most commonly used means
communication within this age group . Also, it will be shown in Secondary and 6th form
school in and around Cambridge via DVDs. I would also aim to link up with universities and
have them use the documentary as a promotion video for Cambridge university to use to
promote the area surrounding the university. And then also distributing it it to Cambridge
airline to play on flights over to Cambridge.
In order to distribute my product I would use websites that I have either made for the
documentary or websites such as Cambridge airline or Cambridge University website .
Giving them permission to either provide links to the the official Documentary website or
display on their websites.
Also to distribute the product I would ask internet streaming services (such as BBC iplayer,
Netflix, ect) tho add the documentary to their film list, as one of the main ways
documentaries are viewed are through sites such as Netfilx and the popularity of some
documentaries has increased dramatically due to streaming websites, such as the Blackfish
documentary.
I would also make it available for online downloads on places such as iTunes. As This would
mean that my documentary would be available, once downloaded, to watch on the go
anywhere, without internet and on any form of devise (phone , tablet, laptop ect.)
In addition to marketing I would create a website for my documentary, so people could
research it and also I would make digital and print adverts to be included in print in local
papers (such as the Cambridge evening news) and on the local news apps. Also I shall use the
synergy and connections I will have made with Cambridge University and Cambridge
airline and send them teaser trailers to post on their social media sites such as twitter,
Facebook and other form social media so that a majority of their customers and students/
applicants can see the trailer and want to see the documentary .
The product would be useful to the council because it encourages people to study, live and
visit Cambridge in a truthful and relatable way.
