Fiji Airways Elderly Passenger

Crawls Down Stairs

Photos of an elderly passenger crawling

down the stairs of a Fiji Airways flight
have gone viral causing outrage on
social media.
A passenger on board the Fiji Airways
flight, Peter Tripp, took photos of the
incident and posted it on Facebook.
Getting off my flight from Fiji. I was
shocked to see how this Fijian lady was
treated.
Ground staff just watched on as the
crew tried to help her crawl and edge
her way down each flight of stairs.
Hello ....there is a duty of care here and
it is not the crews duty to do this. Old
school days... once the door is opened the
passengers are handed to ground staff.
There are legal consequences here and
if she accidentally fell, the crew would
have lost their jobs and the airline sued
for damages.
Passengers on transit bus were
shocked and appalled. A disgusted
passengers said 'OMG is this how they
treat elderly passengers, ROLE THEM
DOWN THE STAIRS'."
Not hyping this up. I said 'no they
bring them down on a lift truck if they
are wheel chairs passengers'."
I got up to say something to the
ground staff and was quickly reminded
by wifey I am OLD SCHOOL and I
don't work for the airlines anymore.
Saying the least after the wheel chair
passenger was wheeled onto the bus,
wifey asked the Ground Controller
if this passenger was a special
requirement why was she not lowered
down on a lift truck.
The controller said that the wheel
chair passenger should have stated that
she could not walk down the stairs.
I turned away in disgust. Did she
think we were born yesterday. Wifey
and I have 45 experience behind us
in passenger travels and this is not the
way we do things in Fiji Airways.
Let's stop contracting Sydney Airport
ground duties and put an island
touch back into the "THE WAY THE
WORLD SHOULD BE."
Fiji Airways managing director and
CEO Andre Viljoen has responded
saying The comfort and safety of all
our passengers is paramount.
We are aware of the unfortunate

"We are unable to provide any further

information surrounding this as we are

5 New Proposed Parties Apply To Reserve

Names

The Fijian Elections Office has

received applications to reserve names
of five new proposed political parties.
The
Supervisor
of
Elections,
Mohammed Saneem, confirmed the
proposed names. But he could not
provide details.
The next step would be for the
proposed parties to fulfill certain
requirements including the obtaining
of 5000 signatures of people endorsing
them before they could be considered
for registration.
It is understood that the Be the Change
Party could be modelled along the same
lines as the platform of Roshika Deo,
who stood as an independent candidate
in the 2014 general election, but failed
to win a seat.
Be the Change was her slogan, calling
for gender balance, equality and more
youth voice. Dont be surprised if she
is the driver of this proposed party.
The proposed Nationalist Party could
take on either of two forms. One could
be like the late Sakeasi Butadrokas now
defunct Fijian Nationalist Party that is
pro-iTaukei and seeks iTaukei political
supremacy or a party that passionately
fights and defends anything Fijian.

The proposed two Christian-based

parties demonstrate the extreme
feelings that exist among some sections
of the Christian fraternity.
While some are beginning to
understand the meaning and positive
implications of a secular state, others
are firmly entrenched in their belief
that Fiji should be a Christian state.
They are behind the bid for a Christian
state. Whether they are acting

individually or as a church group will

be know later. But the president of the
Methodist Church in Fiji, Reverend
Tevita Banivanua, is on record as
saying that Methodists should accept
the secular state which guarantees
everyone the freedom to practice their
own religion as long as they do not
impose it on others.
The Fijian Alliance Party is understood
to be a multiracial group trying to

resurrect the old spirit of the defunct

Alliance Party led by the late Ratu Sir
Kamisese Mara.
Disillusioned members of existing
political parties could be behind this
group.
If they all get registered, the five
proposed political parties will bring to
12 the number of parties registered to
contest the 2018 general election.
The existing parties are: the Fiji
Labour Party, Fiji United Freedom
Party, Peoples Democratic Party,
National Federation Party, SODELPA
and FijiFirst.
If more parties enter the election race,
they will split the votes to the benefit
of the FijiFirst government. They
also show that the interest in the next
election is high.
Thats positive and great for our young
democracy.
The five are:
1) Proposed Be The Change Party
2) Proposed Nationalist Party
3) Proposed Christian Democratic
Party
4) Proposed Fijian Alliance Party
5) Proposed New Christian Democratic
Party

The tsunami threat facing Fiji after a

7.0 magnitude quake hit has passed.
The 10km deep quake struck southwest
of the island nation, 227km away, at
about 10.53am Wednesday morning.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
initially declared the tsunami threat,
which had since passed.
"There is no longer a tsunami threat
from this earthquake," the organisation
reported.
"Remain observant and exercise normal
caution near the sea. Otherwise... no
action is required.
"Minor sea level fluctuations may
occur in some coastal areas near the
earthquake over the next few hours."
The initial tsunami warning prompted
evacuations across Fiji's main island.
A Fiji Sun reporter in Nadi, on the
west-coast, said people immediately
started to evacuate the city after the
earthquake.
Radio broadcasts warned that a tsunami
could hit within an hour of the quake,
she said.
Speaking from Fiji's capital city, Suva,
journalist Halitesh Dattsaid companies
had ordered their buildings closed until
the threat of a tsunami cleared.
Office workers were clearing the city
and heading to higher ground, he said.
"What I'm seeing is just streams and
streams of people walking uphill," said
Corrine Ambler, who is in Suva with the
International Federation of Red Cross.
"There's just a traffic jam, a whole pile
of cars trying to get out of town.
"Everyone's taking it pretty seriously."

There was no sign of damage in Suva

or Nadi.
The initial jolt alarmed many members
of the public.
At the Fiji Sun office at Walu Bay, staff
felt desks and computers shaking for a

good 10-15 seconds.

It alarmed the public in the Sigatoka
market, too, the Fiji Times reported.
Market vendor Deo Narayan said
chairs were shaking.
"We are alarmed and want to go home

but we're waiting for word from the

market master or somebody," he told
the Fiji Times.
NZ Civil Defence quickly announced
there was no tsunami threat to New
Zealand, shortly after the quake.

Victim Of Brutal Holland St Attack Still In

Hospital

An innocent young woman, victim of

the suspected Holland St brutal rape in
Suva, enters her sixth day in hospital.
Her continuing admission at the
Colonial War Memorial Hospital
underlines her serious injuries.
This was a vicious attack by an evil
man, a sex maniac, who deserves to be
behind bars for a long time. As long as
he is on the loose, he is a threat to young
women and must be apprehended.
This heinous crime has left her
traumatised and scarred for life.

Her life will never be the same again.

Fiji Womens Crisis Centre (FWCC)
co-ordinator, Shamima Ali, said the
incident was shocking despite all the
awareness that had been done.
These things still happen in broad
daylight and what this shows is,
actually our women and girls are not
safe either on the streets or in their own
homes, she said.
Its a cry to all the men out there to
start behaving themselves.
The societies and institutions must not

blame women for what is happening to

them because if we continue to blame
them, then more and more men get
encouraged to do such things, she said.
Ms Ali also encouraged the community
to take responsibilities of what has
happened.
As a society we should really reject
this kind of behaviour, its totally
unacceptable! she said.
We are closely following the case
and we will be also encouraging the
Police to catch the perpetrator as soon

as possible.
FWCC is hoping to visit the victim with
the relatives and to have a look at her.
We will find out more if she wishes
to see us.
For any women out there if anything
has happened to you please report it,
either go to the Police stations or call
us at the FWCC or come and see us,
she said.
Police Chief of Operations ACP Rusiate
Tudravu said Police were still continuing
with the manhunt and investigation.

Man Charged With Child Stealing

A 36-YEAR-OLD man charged with
stealing a child has been remanded
in custody by the Nasinu Magistrates
Court.
Melvin Atish Ram appeared before
Magistrate Sufia Hamza in a special
court sitting.
He is charged with one count of child
stealing and one count of resisting
arrest.
The alleged offence took place last
Saturday in Nasinu. The charges were
read out to the accused in court and he
indicated that he understood them.
The court heard the accused was alleged
to have unlawfully and by force taken
away a one-year and three-month-old
child with the intention of depriving

the parent from being a lawful custody

of the child.
Police prosecutor Constable Raymond
Filipe objected to bail on the grounds
the accused was arrested on a bench
warrant and that police officers
were almost injured in the process
of arresting him because he resisted
arrest.
Constable Filipe said the accused,
while driving the car with the infant in
it, only stopped when the car suffered
mechanical problems.
A restraining order has been imposed
on the accused. The defence claimed
in court that the accused was allegedly
assaulted while in police custody and
needed to be medically examined.

Rise In Foreign Investors Despite Winston

There was an increase in foreign
investment in Fiji despite the
devastation caused by Severe Tropical
Cyclone Winston, says Investment Fiji
CEO Godo Muller-Teut.
Reflecting on 2016, Mr Muller-Teut
said the year had been a great yet busy
year for Investment Fiji after being
heavily involved with investors
local and foreign to promote Fiji as
an ideal investment destination.
"A number of delegations and missions
have come to us to know more about the
various sectors, its investment potential
and of course the various incentives put
in by Government," he said.
"Delegations were mainly from China,
Japan, Australia and New Zealand."
Mr Muller-Teut said they helped a
number of investors identify the ideal
fit between the economic benefit of Fiji
and their business opportunities.
"Further we assisted investors in
identifying potential investment targets
and arranging suitable meetings and
introductions," he said.
"Investment Fiji has facilitated
investments by enabling and assisting
investors in establishing their business,
issuing the Foreign Investment

Registration Certificate (FIRC), and

providing information, support and
assistance during the growth phases."|
Mr Muller-Teut said they also worked
out ways to make systems and
processes easier for investors by using
a single window clearance system.
This, he said, enabled investors from
any part of the world to register and
track the progress of their applications
online.
"This reduces time taken for the
investors to make trips to our physical
location. It also enhances transparency
with our system," he said.
"This certainly goes a long way in
ensuring that we enhance our service
delivery and make our processes
and systems more convenient to our
clients."
Investment Fiji has also provided
export support services, including
technical assistance, information on
logistics and regulatory environments
and facilitated various training
opportunities for exporters.
Mr Muller-Teut said one of their major
achievements for 2016 was assisting
more potential investors.
"Compared with 2015, Investment

Fiji has received 43 per cent more

investment enquiries until November
2016," he said.
"This is a very encouraging sign as more
investors are showing their interest and
thinking about exploring investment
opportunities in the country.
"We have also registered more than
200 export related enquiries until
November 2016 which is quite
encouraging."
Mr Muller-Teut said this indicated
that local exporters were coming to
them for services such as helping
them identifying markets or technical
assistance.
He said they also issued more than
320 Foreign Investor Registration
Certificate (FIRC) which was regarded
as a notable achievement.
"Investment, export related queries
and issuance of FIRC is a strong
indication that foreign investors are
now recognising the investment
opportunities and incentives that Fiji
has to offer," he said.
Investment Fiji last year revamped the
inaugural Westpac Prime Minister's
International Business Awards by
introducing 12 new categories from

what was known as Prime Minister's

Exporter of the Year Awards.
Mr Muller-Teut said while tourism
was a promising sector, there were
other sectors as well that attracted a
lot of investors' attention by recording
37 proposed projects until November
last year. Going into 2017, he said the
services sector was earmarked to do
extremely well based on the trends in
the sector.
"In 2009, there were only 18 proposed
projects in the services sector. Until
November 2016, there were now close
to 140 proposed projects in this sector
alone," he said.
"Other sectors such as Wholesale and
Retail also looks promising in 2017.
Wholesale and retail sector makes
more than 20 percent of proposed
projects in all the sectors for the 11
months of 2016."
Mr Muller-Teut added that the
Agriculture
&
Forestry
and
Manufacturing sectors had increased
proposed projects by close to 60
percent since 2014.
"Other sectors that also looked
promising are construction and
financial intermediation," he said.

UniFiji Recognised
Education Minister Mahendra Reddy
has praised the role of the University
of Fiji in opening up the education
opportunities.
Mr Reddy said he recalled his days at
the University of the South Pacific how
parents had struggled to find a place at
USP.
Now there are three universities,
with Fiji National University and the
University of Fiji providing alternatives
to USP and real competition for it.
Mr Reddy also shared how people used
to be treated at USP and how they were
not given programmes of their choice
and pushed into those that had low
numbers that did not suit their aptitude
or interest.
Mr Reddy was speaking at the launching
of the University of Fijis new signage
on a Classic Bus in Lautoka.
The $500,000 partnership which is
contracted for two years between the
University and the bus company will
see four buses carrying an in-built free
advertisement with full signage sporting
the name, The University of Fiji.
Another 10 buses will carry a
partial advertisement displaying the
Universitys logo enshrined at one side
of the bus.
Dr Reddy said the collaboration of
tertiary institutions and the private
sector has been absent in Fiji.
He said universities in other countries
had partnerships with the corporate
sector where they (corporate sector)
would fund certain programmes that of
interest to them.
This has been absent in Fiji and the
region as well.

This project will raise the importance

of partnership between the corporate
sector and universities.
He thanked Classic Buses for taking a
bold step in forming a partnership with
the University of Fiji.
Dr Reddy said the initiative by the
University to promote itself by the
advertisement on buses would surely
change the mindset of people.
I see this project having a big impact
on Governments vision to increase the
penetration of education in Fiji.
He said the attraction of students to the

University will have a big impact at

national level.
Since its inception, the University of
Fiji has grown to create a special place
amongst tertiary institutions in Fiji,
Mr Reddy said.
Its flagship medical programme speaks
volumes of the level of confidence and
trust people have in this institution.
The Vice Chancellor of the University
of Fiji, Professor Prem Misir said this
initiative, inspired by the Universitys
Executive director Finance, Ravineet
Sami, was consonant with the

University strategic plan for UniFijis

academic-industry collaboration.
He said several transportation companies
were parties to the negotiations,
including Classic Buses, who, at the
endpoint, expressed its interest.
The initiative is also to help the staff
and students of the University of Fiji to
defray the cost of transportation to ease
access to the university, Professor
Misir said.
Classic buses would be transporting
students and staff from Ba, Lautoka
and Nadi to and from the campus.

A man who tried to force others to

drink his home brew got a taste of his
own brew at Nasali Landing in Rewa.
When he was rejected, he tried to punch
one of the men.
A brawl ensued and the home
brew man ended up in Wainibokasi
Hospital.
He and two others have been taken in
by Police for questioning for the New
Year brawl, Police sources say.
Ana Naisoro, the Police spokesperson,
could not be reached last night to
comment on this incident.
The injured man is understood to have

suffered head injuries.

He was admitted at the hospital but
allegedly discharged himself last
Sunday night. But Police picked him
up from his village later and took him
to Nausori Police Station.
Nasali resident, Eminoni Lidi, 54, said
the incident occurred on New Years
Day.
The man who was assaulted had made
home brew which he thought to drink
with the two brothers, he said.
He brought the home brew and forced
the others to drink while he was eyeing
his friends wife.

It was said that the other friend didnt

like what he was doing and forcing
them to drink so they chased him out
of the house.
But when he was chased out, he
punched one of the two brothers and
thats when the fight started ending
with one in hospital and the other two
in the Police Station, Mr Lidi said.
He said, No one here drinks home
brew.
There are many great products out
there and on affordable price, so people
dont drink home brew here anymore,
he said.

People prefer to purchase their

desired beer or other alcoholic drink
from the market instead of making it
at home.
He said this type of incident used to
happen back in the old days.
Before, many years back we used to
witness brawls and fights around here
but now for years, this place has been
quiet.
It is a bit surprising to hear and see
these things happen in our community
which is raising concerns as it is
creating a negative impact on our
young children, Mr Lidi said.

The New Year celebrations turned grim

for Eshwini Latas family of Vatamai,
Lovu, Lautoka, as their three-bedroom
house was destroyed by fire which
started around 9:45am.
Eshwinis father, Anil Kumar, who
lives in the same compound, said that
Eshwini, his son-in-law and children
were out in their vegetable farm a few
metres away from their house when the
incident occurred.

At that time everyone had went out

to the farms and nobody was at my
daughters residence, Mr Kumar said.
Me and my granddaughter were at my
place when she came rushing to me
alerting me of the smoke coming out
of the house.
We were not able to save anything as
the house was filled with thick smoke.
According to Mr Kumar, the fire had
started from one of the bedrooms but

was still unsure how the fire started.

The three-bedroom corrugated iron
and wooden structure took just 30
minutes to be destroyed by the flames,
he said.
The family managed to salvage their
car from the flames with the help of a
tractor.
The keys of the car was inside the
house, we had to tie a rope to a tractor
and pull the car out of the garage to save

it from the flames, Mr Kumar said.

Despite this the car still got partially
damaged, especially the wind shield.
Mr Kumar said that his daughter, sonin-law and four children had shifted to
his house after the incident.
The Kumar family is still waiting for
the National Fire Authoritys approval
to clean and rebuild the house.
Investigations are still underway to
find out the cause of the fire.

Specialist Team Completes Customs Watch Vehicle

20 Surgeries
Traders

Over 20 surgeries including complex

treatments by specialists were
completed at the Labasa Hospital by the
Taiwan-based Cathay General Hospital
mobile medical team last month.
Team leader Dr Ching-Ling Lin said
they were proud that they came to
extend their services to the people of
Fiji.
Team
members
including
endocrinologist,
radiologist,
pharmacist, DM educator, and two ear,
nose and throat (ENT) surgeons, worked
with the staff of Labasa Hospital.
During the weeklong event our ENT
surgeons, who worked with doctors
from Labasa Hospital, had done over
20 surgeries including inspection
of the digestive system (endoscopic
polypectomy),
correct
physical
disorder of the nose (deviated nasal
septum), tonsil removal procedure
(tonsillectomy), hearing disorder
treatment (preauricular fistulectomy)

and drainage of neck abscess, he said.

Teaching sessions for radiology and
portable ultrasound examination were
provided every day, especially focus
on the field of the thyroid gland.
In
addition,
multidiscipline
consultation for complicated cases
involving
endocrinology,
ENT
surgeons, and radiologists were carried
out by our team members for patients,
he said.
He also said they had ENT clinics
during the week and had treated almost
40 patients.
Some patients got more than 70 per
cent recovery in their hearing after our
ENT surgeons treatment.
This was the second team of medical
personnel as part of the annual event.
Meanwhile, the public can expect
similar medical services to be offered
when the two teams are scheduled for
2017 with the venues to be revealed
later.

Record Year For Exchange

THE South Pacific Stock Exchange
(SPSE), in its trading summary for
the week ended December 30, 2016,
reported another record high year for
Market Capitalisation and SPSE Total
Return Index (STRI).
This was after the overall market cap
rose by $4,523,695 (0.34 per cent)
to close at an all-time high value of
$1,318,795,202, which was attributed
mainly to positive price returns
recorded for Amalgamated Telecom
Holdings (ATH), Pleass Global (PBP)
and Fijian Holdings (FHL) shares.
Likewise the STRI rose by 0.34 per
cent after taking into account the price
gains to close at 3172.79.
The SPSE reported that while ATH

and PBP share prices rose to their

all-time highs of $1.27 and $1.48
respectively, FHL shares recorded
further price increase to close the
week at $4.09. While trading settled
lower during the week with only 5936
shares changing hands at a value of
$11,045 in six transactions the three
price increases created capital gain
opportunities for holders of these
shares.
The SPSE had provided a graph of the
market capitalisation over the past 10
years, which showed that the market
cap level had steadily increased from
January 2014 to close at the all-time
high of $1,318,795,202 on the last
trading day of 2016.

MOTOR vehicle dealers who fail

to adhere to the duty rate charges
announced earlier last month would be
fined up to $50,000 by the Fiji Revenue
and Customs Authority.
FRCA chief executive officer Visvanath
Das said the authority would be strictly
monitoring the recent Customs Duty
imposed on the importation of used or
reconditioned hybrid vehicles in Fiji.
"This is a reminder to all motor vehicle
dealers that for used or reconditioned
hybrid motor vehicles that have been
cleared under duty concession prior to
1st January 2017, the concessionary rate
granted is to be reflected on the price of
the same when sold," Mr Das said.
A statement from FRCA yesterday said
a team from FRCA would be out on the
field pre-duty and post-duty imposition
to ensure motor vehicle dealers adhered
to the duty rate changes announced
earlier this month.
He warned motor vehicle dealers that
a Customs Infringement Notice would
be issued if they were found abusing
the system.
"Any abuse will result in issuance of

Customs Infringement Notice for not

passing on the zero-duty to consumers,"
he said.
"Our consumers play a crucial role
in effective tax administration by
reporting any non-compliant practices
by businesses. We urge Fiji public to
report immediately any incident of
increased price on these stocks. You
can send details with documentary
evidence to ceo@frca.org.fj."
Meanwhile the authority would also be
publishing the landed cost of all used
vehicles imported into the country
from next week.
"These landing costs will be published in
the dailies next week and will be on the
FRCA website www.frca.org.fj on a
quarterly basis, thereafter," said Mr Das.
"The policy intent is very clear to
ensure that car dealers do not impose
high mark-ups and effectively pass on
duty concessions to ordinary Fijians."
Mr Das reminded motor car dealers
of the severe penalties for noncompliance to Customs laws and abuse
of duty concessions that are granted to
be passed on to ordinary Fijians.

A family of seven has told how their

house was damaged by a landslide two
weeks ago.
Arun Kumar and wife Melawati
Kumar of Tacirua relived their story
that dreadful Saturday night.
We were sleeping. At about two
oclock in the morning my husband
woke me up, Mrs Kumar said.
He felt the earth and the house move.
Mrs Kumar said the whole family
woke up and just ran out of the house
fearing for their lives.
The couple rushed out with their two
sons, a daughter-in-law, and a six-yearold granddaughter with their 84-year-

old mother-in-law, Lachmi Naidu.

We were so lucky that some of our
relatives were awake that night who
felt the shake in the house, said Mrs
Kumar.
In 2003 a similar incident happened to
the family but not as bad as it is now.
The family are just lucky to be alive
and right now relocation is the only
option, because the condition of the
landslide is worse and their house is
not liveable.
As of now the couple are staying with
nearby relatives and are seeking the
assistance of the relevant authorities to
help them relocate.

Wife Claims Men Beaten By Police

A SUVA woman claims her husband
and his friend were beaten by officers
at the Sigatoka Police Station during
the weekend over claims they had
stolen a motor vehicle from a rental
car company and made illegal
modifications to it.
The woman said she could only speak
to this newspaper on the condition of
anonymity after claiming officers at the
station also threatened to beat her up if
she reported the matter to the media.
"My husband and his friend presented
themselves at the Sigatoka Police
Station last week on Friday at 2pm
after they received information they
were wanted by police," she claimed.
"When they went there, police locked
them up and began interrogating them
and then began torturing them by

punching them and using a crowbar to

hit them on their legs.
"When they asked for medical
treatment, they were told to wait. When
they asked for pain medication, they
were told to go to the shop and buy it.
"When I asked to see my husband
on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the
officers swore at me and told me they
could give me a good New Year's
present if I stayed with them.
"They have been in police custody
from last Friday and I was only allowed
to go and see them when I brought my
lawyer."
The suspects' lawyer, Avinesh Reddy,
said he was appalled at the manner in
which his clients were being treated
and also with the way the officers
had threatened the wife of one of the

accused.
"Firstly, every suspect has the right to
be treated in a dignified manner and
whether he is guilty or not, that is a
matter for the court to decide and to
mete out the appropriate punishment,"
he said.
"I managed to meet with the suspects
and they have injuries to their face and
more serious ones to their legs.
"No person taken into custody
should be subjected to this kind
of treatment, police officers are
supposed to uphold the law and it
is very clear that there was abuse of
powers in this instance.
"Secondly, the manner in which they
verbally abused and threatened the
wife of one of the suspects is also a
very serious matter and we intend to

pursue both matters very vigorously

through the appropriate channels."
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro
confirmed the two men had been taken
into custody.
"The two have been charged," she
said. "The 44-year-old director of the
rental company has been charged with
one count of theft and one count of
non-approved modifications while the
second accused, a 26-year-old, has
been charged with one count of theft."
Ms Naisoro said they would be
produced in the Nadi Magistrates'
Court.
"As for the claims of assault we will
look into the allegations as we will also
have to give our officers an opportunity
to get their side of the story before we
make further comments on the issue."

Residents of three notorious Suva

streets have called for more Police
patrols and street lights.
Their call comes in the wake of the
brutal assault and suspected rape of a
young university student of Holland St,
Toorak.
This is one of the three streets dubbed
as the streets of fear. The other two
are Brewster Road, Toorak, and
Robertson Road, off Waimanu Road in
Suva. These three roads are somehow
connected to the shortcuts used by the
people living on the streets.
They are shaken by the incident where
a student was grabbed along Holland
Street by a man last Friday. The young
woman is still admitted at the Colonial
Memorial War (CWM) Hospital in
Suva and severely traumatised.
Police
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said:
No arrest has been made and we are
appealing for information that could
assist with our investigations. Anyone
who may have seen someone acting
in a suspicious manner around or near
the scene of the crime between 10am
12pm is requested to call Crime
Stoppers on 919.
Residents response
The Fiji Sun team spoke to the residents
of the three streets. Movie Xpress
managing partner of Holland Street,
Rajneil Sharma, said the rape had put
people in the area in fear.
He said he had heard about people
getting robbed before. But this was

the first time such an incident has

happened at Holland St, he said.
I have been running my shop at the
Holland Street for the last five years.
I am shocked after the incident
because this could happen to anyone
on the street. This street is mostly quiet
because not much traffic comes here.
Holland Street is connecting to Knolly
Street up to Dudley High school; it is
always risky to walk on the street after
9pm because there is not much traffic
flow and no street light.
These shortcuts which connect from
one street to another street are very
dangerous, he said.
Another resident Vinesh Chandra, 62,
said: The problem is people coming
through the Raojibhai Patel Street,
crossing the creek and coming into
Holland Street.
They come and drink near the creek
after they are chased by the Police
officers from the Raojibhai Patel
Street.
Mr Chandra said at times, people living
on the street drank and made a lot of
noise.
Last Saturday morning, one of the
street kids tried to break in one of my
flats, he said.
Luckily my neighbour saw it and he
then called me. When we came out, the
street kid ran away.
Mr Chandra has lived in the area for
the last 30 years. He recalled that in the
past there were more Police patrols.
There needs to be more patrolling

done by the Police. This would be the

best way to prevent crime. he said.
Resident of Robertson Road, Isaiah
Tekiata said: There are shortcuts linked
to Robertson Rd. They are potential
hotbeds for criminal activities.
They usually come early in the
morning from nightclubs and they
move up and down. Some end up in the
motels at Robertson Rd.
Mostly new people are targets of
robbery at Robertson Rd. Also those
who walk the street at night are targets
too.
Mr Tekiata said there was an urgent
need for more streetlights and Police
patrols.
Pastor of the Kingdom Ambassador
International church at Robertson
Rd, Jone Nagade, said: They use the
shortcuts to walk down the street.
Its only few of them moving around.
Police have declared Robertson Rd as
a red zone, he said.
Pastor Nagade said last year there were
few cases where the cars of church
members were broken into.
We just request for more Police
patrols in the area, he said.
I think the best way for the community
is to help street people and talk to
them.
A resident of Brewster Street, Maureen
Osborne, said women and girls
needed to learn self-defence to protect
themselves.
There are some people who use shortcuts
which lead to Augusta Street, Brown

Street and Raiwaqa Street, she said.

There is need for more Police
patrolling for peoples safety.
Recently, another young woman fought
off an attacker who tried to drag her to
a vacant house at Brewster St.
Police Commissioner
Police
Commissioner
BrigadierGeneral
Sitiveni
Qiliho
has
acknowledged the concerns.
He said: These streets are parts of
Suva area which we are currently
patrolling and we will increase patrols.
Issues that have happened here
recently show we need to be more
focused and smart with our patrolling
time as well.
In the recent rape that happened at
Holland St we are trying very hard to
apprehend the perpetrator and we will
continue to do that.
We cannot do it alone. Members of
the community need to work together
and work with us on this.
Authoritys response
Suva City Council chief executive
officer Bijay Chand said the Fiji Roads
Authority was responsible for street
lights.
FRAs chief executive officer, John
Hutchinson, said they were aware that
some streets did not have adequate lights.
I acknowledge that and we are
working on it, he said.
He said FRA had a programme to
rectify the lack of proper street lights.
We cant solve 30 or 40 years of
neglect overnight, he said.

SODELPA leader, Sitiveni Rabuka,

says they expect more candidate
applications for the 2018 general
election when they open their mailbox.
He said while applications closed on
December 31, the closing date could
be extended because the party believed
in including youths.
We have received about 50
applications so far and we have not

opened our mailbox since Saturday

until Monday, he said.
So when we open the mailbox and we
are expecting some more, he said.
The applications were open only for
one month.
On the calibre of the applicants received
so far, he said: We are looking for
people that have a credible background;
people who have shown a clean record

of service to the people; people who are

qualified to represent the people and
debate intelligently in Parliament.
He said the applications would
undergo a selection process whereby
the candidates would have to state their
basic campaigning ground and the area
they wished to represent.
He said information that candidates
provided would be cross-checked with the

areas Constituency Committee for their

eligibility, accountability and suitability.
Meanwhile, National Federation Party
leader Biman Prasad, said last night the
NFP will fight the 2018 election on its
own as it did in 2014.
He was responding to Mr Rabukas
invitation to parties to work together
not as a coalition but in co-operation to
defeat the FijiFirst Government.

Families Fear Losing

Homes
Rakiraki resident 71-year-old Urmila
Wati said the cost of building a retaining
wall was too expensive for her.
Two families of Naqoro in Rakiraki
fear for their lives and homes in the
event of another landslide.
Urmila Wati, 71, of Naqoro, Rakiraki,
has seen a portion of her land, close to
her home slip away during Tropical
Cyclone Winston and the recent floods.
She fears another spell of heavy rain
could mean disaster for her home.
The front porch sits about three metres
from the edge of the last landslide.
Another neighbour, Pushp Chandra
Naidu, the owner of the house on the
lower part of the area has seen the
landslide remove part of his property
and his house is barely standing.
The back of his house is about a metre
from the slope where the landslide
occurred and any future slip of the
earth would be disastrous.
Mr Naidu said he feared this would
happen before the landslide and advised
his neighbour, but could not do much.

Ms Wati, whose husband is bedridden,

said a Government official who
inspected the land slide recently said
they would do something to stop
further erosion of soil from the slide.
They are taking too long and we
are scared that future erosions could
damage our house, Ms Wati said.
She said the cost of building a retaining
wall was too expensive for her.
If we dont do anything about this
matter now our house will go down
with the slide one day, she said.
For the time being, Ms Wati said they
would not put up a retaining wall, but
rather place rocks in the eroded area
which would be held together with a
concrete plaster.
We had put eight drums and
corrugated iron and five loads of soil to
stop prevent further erosions, but it did
not work, she said.
She said this cost them around $1000.
They have asked for Governments
assistance on this issue because her
husband was not able to move.

Specific Duty Rate Motor

Vehicles
THE Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority
(FRCA), in its public circular no 4 of 2016,
talked about the amendments initiated in the
2016-2017 budget on duty on motor vehicles.
This FIRCA said was to minimise road
congestion and to encourage the use of
public transportation.
The notice further said there would also
be a reduction in duty from 15 to five per
cent for new passenger motor vehicles
effective from January 1, 2017.
The following budget measures were
introduced for duty on motor vehicles
following the 2016-2017 budget
announcements in June 2016.
Specific duty rate on second-hand vehicles
were increased as follows from 1 August 2016:
- 1000 cc >1500cc >2500 cc >3000 cc
vehicles $23,000 specific duty;
- from January 1, 2017, the following
specific rates of duty became applicable
on second-hand hybrid vehicles; and
- 1500cc >2500 cc >3000 vehicles will
attract $6,500 specific duty
The FRCA notice also said there would
be a reduction in duty on hybrid electric

vehicles and electric motor vehicles

which have yet to be introduced in Fiji.
This will also encourage Fijians to buy
more electric and hybrid vehicles and
decrease fuel usage in Fiji.
However,
regardless
of
these
amendments the notice said new hybrid
vehicles would continue to attract zero
duty as was the current practice.
Meanwhile, this newspaper after
receiving a tip-off last month on the
number of second-hand hybrid vehicles
being offloaded at the Suva Kings
Wharf during the month of December
paid the port a visit and took pictures.
We found hundreds of vehicles being
offloaded and we were reliably informed
that there had been about four to five
shipments in the last two months of last
year where more than 3000 secondhand hybrid vehicles were offloaded.
Car dealers may have beefed up their
orders of the vehicles in the last two
months of last year in a bid to avoid the
specific duty on second-hand vehicles
which became applicable on January 1.

Domestic Violence Helpline Launch Next Month

A Domestic Violence Helpline will be
launched by the end of this month.
This was confirmed by the Fiji
Womens Crisis Centre Co-ordinator,
Shamima Ali. The helpline number has
not yet been confirmed.
The establishment of the Domestic
Violence Helpline was an initiative of
the Ministry of Woman, Children and
Poverty Alleviation, which was handed
over to the Fiji Womens Crisis Centre
last year to manage.
We will be having a meeting with
the Ministry for Women, Children and
Poverty Alleviation next week to decide
the launching date of the Domestic
Violence Helpline, Ms Ali said.
At the moment our staff members are
undergoing training on how to use the
helpline, how to record and how to
collect the data.
Ms Ali said the Domestic Violence
Helpline was a toll free line for any
woman or child.
Even children who are victims of
domestic violence can call and we will

also assist them, Ms Ali said.

We will give them the legal advice
that they need, guide them with Police
and medical procedures and arrange for
emergency action in terms of getting
any woman out from a bad situation.
As of November 30, 2016 the centre
recorded 1200 domestic violence cases
from all their centres around the country.
Majority of the cases are physical,
which also include mental torture.
About 20 per cent of the cases would
lead to sexual assault, Ms Ali said.
Meanwhile, the centre will open three
new shelters for rape and domestic
violence survivors this year.
Ms Ali said: We are working on
three shelters, which should be up and
running this year. Two are for domestic
violence survivors in Labasa and Ba.
Ms Ali said they have already got the
buildings, but were in the process of
cleaning them up and waiting for the
finalisation on the ethical standard of
the shelters.
The centre will open one shelter for

We will create more awareness on rape to them, she said.

Court Issues Subpoena For Minister Ratu Inoke

The Minister for Defence Ratu Inoke
Kubuabola will be subpoenaed to
appear as a witness in the trial of
suspended Opposition parliamentarian,
Ratu Isoa Tikoca.
Tikoca is charged by the Fiji
Independent Commission Against
Corruption with failing to declare his
liabilities before the 2014 General
Elections.
Magistrate Makereta Mua granted the
order and issued the subpoena after the
prosecuting lawyer, Rashmi Aslam,
said he had no objection.

Mr Aslam told the court that they did

not have any issues with the subpoena
being issued to Ratu Inoke because it
would assist the court.
Defence lawyer, Kitione Vuetaki told
the court they would be abandoning
orders one and two that they had sought
previously.
Orders one and two were:
That written reasons be given as to why
the learned Magistrate presiding over
this case directed that the subpoena
against Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, the
current Minister for Defence, be

rejected by the Magistrate Court

Criminal Registry and not issued.
If the reasons are that the learned
Magistrate presiding over this case
fears or favours the said Ratu Inoke
Kubuabola or the present Government
then the said Magistrate recuse herself
from further presiding over this case.
Mr Aslam also told court that
prosecution had three witnesses, while
Mr Vuetaki told the the court that the
defence had three to four witnesses.
It is alleged that he failed to declare his
liabilities contrary to Section 24 (2) (a)

(viii) and section 24(5) of the Political

Parties
(Registration,
Conduct,
Funding and Disclosures) Decree No.
4 of 2013.
The case has been adjourned for a
hearing from January 9 to January 13.

What Leaders Dont Know

The biggest difference in the
development journey of a leader and
of one of their team can be attributed
to the amount and quality of feedback
they receive.
Leaders struggle to receive equality
feedback so as a result struggle to
develop yet this is not the same in other
roles within an organization.
When you start in an organization you
will make mistakes, its natural and its
even expected because you are new.
As a new employee you are made well
aware of your mistakes and what can
be done better, in fact its difficult to
avoid such feedback.
It comes from your boss, your
colleagues, your customers and maybe
even your bosss boss.
Everyone tells you when you make a
mistake yet when you progress up the
ranks in an organization that changes
and when you become a leader you
receive less feedback.
People by their very nature are hesitant
to approach a leader about a mistake
made by the leader himself.
Will they be criticised? Yes they will
be but its rare for that criticism to be
provided to the leader and studies have
shown that this gets worse for the more
senior roles the leader is in.
Its important to remember that
everyone makes mistakes.
Hopefully the leader doesnt make
many mistakes and when they do they
dont have a significant impact but no
leader is a perfect person and they will
make mistakes and mistakes are vital
for development.
The best way for anyone to learn
anything is to actually do it and learn
what works and what doesnt.
A mistake at its very foundation is a
gift showing you how to do something
better but it only works when you
are aware that a mistake is occurring
otherwise you will be destined to
repeat the mistake over and over again.
Why leaders dont get feedback?
Its difficult to tell anyone that you
believe they are wrong.
The person may be offended, you may
cause unnecessary conflict, they may
retaliate, they may just ignore you so
whats the point and you may even be
wrong.
When you add into the equation that the
person who made a mistake is a leader,
someone who is in a more senior role
and has a certain amount of power over
you, the situation becomes even more
difficult.
This is a shame because its difficult
for the leader to become better when
they dont know what they are doing
wrong.
For a leader to be successful they need
to know what their team really thinks
about them.
What people really think about their
leader?
In a survey done by the Australasian
Leadership Institute employees from
a range of industries were asked what
they really thought about their boss and

the results were interesting.

Every team and every leader is
different but overall employees felt
their boss was hard working and trust
worthy but were poor communicators,
not very good motivators who needed
leadership training.
82% of leaders were rated as
trustworthy by their employees
67% of leaders were rated as
hardworking by their employees
But
37% of leaders were rated as poor
motivators
37% of leaders were rated as poor
communicators
73% of employees felt their leader
would benefit from leadership training
33% of leaders were rated as poor by
their employees
The research showed that employees
had significant concerns about their
leaders but more worryingly also
showed that leaders were unaware of
what their team thought about them
because the survey showed that a third
of all leaders were considered to be
poor leaders.
When the leaders were surveyed, less
than one in ten leaders (9%) rated
themselves as a poor leader.
A big discrepancy and further proof
about just how little quality feedback
leaders got and I see this in action
every day.
As a Leadership Coach I work directly
with leaders and a common issue is that
they dont know what they dont know
so they are not making improvements
because they believe everything is
going fine.
They are unaware that others are seeing
mistakes that they themselves are not
seeing, but there is a solution.
How to get feedback
Leaders need feedback but how do they
get it? You may think its as simple
as just asking your team but this has
challenges in itself.
In the vast majority of circumstances
employees
would
find
this
uncomfortable and are likely to
provide more positive feedback than
what they really believe, which doesnt
help the leader because leaders can
only develop when they know the truth.
Let me share what I do with my clients.
I implement what is called a 360
degree feedback surveys.
This is when I find out what the leaders
employees and peers really think about
them as a leader, what their strengths
and weaknesses really are.
I go through the responses to ensure
confidentiality so the leader doesnt
know who said what and also make
sure the feedback is useful.
If someone criticises without substance
or merit then that doesnt help anyone.
I then sit down with the leader going
through what was said and use this
feedback to put together an action plan
for improvement.
I have to stress that under no
circumstances should the leader try
to do this themselves as it wont work

and people will just tell the leader what

they want to hear.
When done correctly the 360 degree
feedback tool can be the best tool for
the leader to develop.
If you are reading this and thinking
to yourself the leader may find the
feedback difficult to hear, you are
correct but anything worth having in life
is by its very nature difficult to obtain.
Its important that the leader sees
peoples comments as feedback and
nothing more. They dont have to agree
with the comments but they have to
respect that someone else may have a
different opinion to them because for a
leader perception is reality.
If an employee believes that their
Manager doesnt care for them, it
doesnt matter if that is true or not
because if they believe its true then they
will react accordingly until they receive
information that changes their opinion.
In leadership the perception is reality.
The employees opinion of the
leader influences how the employee
interacts with the leader which in turn
influences how the leader reacts with
the employee.

The perception becomes the reality,

quality leaders understand this and
explore what their team thinks of
them so they can manage the different
perceptions and become a better leader.
Its important for a leader to be fully
aware of what their employees are
thinking about them so they can lead
accordingly.
The truth that all leaders need to realise
is that in the eyes of their team they
are not as good a leader as they believe
they are.
The research is overwhelming that
Leaders in business are leading in the
dark because they are trying to operate
without all the necessary information
they need to lead.
They dont know what their employees
are reading thinking. This is not a
failing this is just natural behaviour
but if a leader wants to be an effective
leader they need all the information
they can and that starts with getting a
360 feedback survey done.
Mark Wager is one of the world top
leadership experts. 360 degree feedback
surveys can be arranged through Mark

Students Urged To
Apply For Tels
Leaving home to pursue further studies
in the capital city wasnt easy for two
Bua brothers.
Shavneet Nand 24, and Rajnit Nand
18, lost their dad two years ago and
that was the motivation that triggered
them to work hard.
Older brother Shavneet was helping his
brother sort out his application at the
Tertiary Education and Loans board
office in Suva.
Rajnit was submitting his application
to pursue a Bachelor in Mechanical
engineering at the University of the
South Pacific which is a three year
programme.
My family wont be able to pay this
amount of money for my tuition fees so
this scheme will help us tremendously,
said Rajnit.
His older brother, Shavneet was under
the multi-ethnic scholarship three
years ago and completed a diploma

in Architecture from the Fiji National

University.
Both brothers attribute their success to
their hard working mum who still lives
in Nabouwalu, Bua.
The brothers encourage all students to
take up the opportunity and to work
hard in their studies.
Travelling all the way from
Matawailevu village in Nalawa Ra to
apply for the scheme was former Ra
High School student, Ilivasi Sadua.
Mr Sadua was accompanied by his
father and small sister who left their
village at six oclock in the morning
and reached Suva around 10am.
For me getting this scheme is really
important as I want to help my family as
my father is a farmer, said Mr Sadua.
Mr Sadua will be pursuing a Diploma
in Electrical engineering at FNU,
Samabula campus which is a two year
programme.

Garment Industry
Expects More Players

THE Textile, Clothing and Footwear

Council of Fiji says it expects some
new players in the garment industry
this year.
TCF president Kaushik Kumar said
the council received some interest
and hoped to see more players in the
industry.
There are more than 40 garment
factories in the country.
On the council's expectations for this
year, Mr Kumar said they expected
exports to remain stable and had plans
to explore new markets in the MSG
group.
In the past few weeks garment factories
advertised for a number of positions
ranging from machinist to other
garment factory workers.
"There are a number of reasons for
this. Some factories do experience
an increased demand in orders in
the new year and in order to meet

delivery deadlines, additional staff are

required," said Mr Kumar.
"Also most factories close for annual
leave around the Christmas and New
Year period and a number of staff go
back to their island, village or home
towns."
According to Mr Kumar quite a few of
them do not come back when factories
reopen after the leave period.
He said the workers returned after one
or two months, therefore factories had
to find replacement staff members.
"Some staff also move on to other
jobs. The industry has had a stable
period and factories affected by Severe
Tropical Cyclone Winston are doing
okay as well.
"Finding skilled staff remains a
challenge in our industry as in other
industries. This shows that there is
a demand for skilled workers in the
country."

Early & Late Signs Of Kidney Disease

Signs of early kidney damage can
develop in more than half the people
with diabetes.
Signs of early kidney damage can
develop in more than half the people
with diabetes. If left untreated, this could
lead to more damage or kidney failure.
During its early course, diabetic
nephropathy often has no symptoms.
Symptoms can take 5 to 10 years to
appear after the kidney damage begins.
You could be in a process of serious
kidney damage without being aware
of it. There are usually no specific
symptoms of kidney disease until the
damage is severe. However, if you have
diabetes, you should be tested once a
year to see if diabetes has affected your
kidneys. Your doctor can arrange a

urine test for protein (a random urine

test for albumin to creatinine ratio and
microalbuminuria), and a blood test
to check how well your kidneys are
functioning (the serum creatinine).
As the kidney function worsens,
symptoms may include:
* Swelling of the hands, feet, and face
* Trouble sleeping or concentrating
* Poor appetite
* Nausea and vomiting
* Weakness
* Itching (end-stage kidney disease)
and extremely dry skin

* Drowsiness
disease)

(end-stage

kidney

* Abnormalities in the heart's regular

rhythm, because of increased potassium
in the blood
* Muscle twitching
As kidney damage progresses, your
kidneys cannot remove the waste from
your blood. The waste then builds up
in your body and can reach poisonous
levels, a condition known as uremia.
People with uremia are often confused
or comatose.
Worsening of kidney disease may be
slowed, stopped or even reversed if
caught very early. It is very important

to slow worsening of kidney as the

advanced stage of the disease is kidney
failure, when the kidney -cannot do its
job of filtering harmful wastes from
the blood. An individual needs at least
one functioning kidney to survive.
When kidneys fail, dialysis or a kidney
transplant is necessary to stay alive.
Kidney disease can progress to kidney
failure more quickly among those who
have diabetes. The best chance to stop
kidney disease from progressing is
to recognize it early and start with a
treatment course that can slow or stop
the decline in kidney function.
Do you have any of the above
symptoms? If yes, do check with your
doctor if you need any additional tests
to be done.

C-Section Delivery May Produce Blood Clot In Vein

Women are more likely to suffer from

blood clots in the veins, usually in legs
after a C-section delivery compared to
a vaginal delivery (VD), according to a
new study.
The study said that there is a
link between C-section and an
increased absolute risk of venous
thromboembolism (VTE)-- obstruction
of a blood vessel by a blood clot that
has become dislodged from another
site in the circulation -- including
pulmonary embolism and deep vein
thrombosis.
They found that C-section was
associated with a higher rate of overall
VTE risk.

The research published in the journal

CHEST, reviewed 60 authoritative
studies related to postpartum VTE
outcomes and found that C-section
carries a fourfold greater VTE risk than
vaginal delivery.
"We found that C-section is an
important independent risk factor
for the development of VTE in
the postpartum period and that
approximately three VTE will occur
for every 1,000 C-section performed,"
said Marc Blondon, Managing
Director of Division of Angiology
and Hemostasis, Geneva University
Hospitals, Switzerland.
In fact, there were greater risks

involved in case of nonscheduled

emergency C-section delivery.
Pregnant women become more
susceptible to VTE due to a variety of
factors, including venous stasis and
trauma associated to delivery.
Also, hemostatic changes drive
increases in some coagulation factors,
while decreasing bleeding inhibitors,
but for some reason these changes seem
to be worse for women who deliver via
C-section.
"In the postpartum period specifically,
women following C-section exhibit
greater activation of coagulation than
women following VD, as reflected
by greater D-dimer levels," Blondon

added.
D-dimer levels -- the protein fragment
present in the blood -- indicate that
blood clots may be forming or breaking
down in the body.
Furthermore, physical activity is
reduced following C-section as
compared to vaginal delivery with
delayed recovery of mobility occurring
in the first two days post delivery.
Investigators
also
recommended
against compression ultrasound when
C-section patients without symptoms
of VTE are discharged from the hospital
because their research indicated that it
was not useful in catching postpartum
DVT.

While electric fans keep young adults

cooler by increasing the evaporation of
sweat, they may, surprisingly, have the
opposite effect for those above the age
of 60, suggests new research.
The heart rate and internal temperature
of seniors exposed to 41.6 degree Celsius
temperatures and increasing humidity
levels climbed even higher when they
tried to cool off with fans -- instead of
falling as expected, according to study
findings reported in the journal JAMA.
"Although differences were small, the
cumulative effect could become clinically
important during prolonged heat
exposure, such as during extreme heat
waves," said Craig Crandall, Professor of
Internal Medicine at University of Texas
Southwestern Medical Center in the US.
"We know that fans keep young adults
cooler by increasing the evaporation of
sweat," Crandall said.
"We
surmise
that
age-related
impairments in sweating capacity make
fans an ineffective means of cooling
for the elderly during exceptionally hot
days, and may, in fact, increase thermal
and cardiac strain," Crandall noted.
Researchers studied the physiological

responses of a small group of elderly

patients in a high-heat, high-humidity
environment.
Participants between the ages of 60 and
80 were observed for approximately
two hours in a room with the
temperature set at a sweltering 41.6
degrees Celsius and a humidity level
that was gradually increased from 30
per cent to 70 per cent.
Not surprisingly, both heart rate and
internal body temperature rose as the
humidity level in the room rose.
The eight individuals in the study were
tested under those conditions without a
fan and, on a separate occasion, with
an electric fan.
Unexpectedly,
the
participants'
heart rates were 10 beats per minute
higher and their internal temperatures
marginally higher when a fan was part
of the experimental environment.
Although these findings suggest that
fan use may be counterproductive
for seniors during heat waves, the
investigators propose that fan use may
still be beneficial under less extreme
environmental conditions, though this
needs to be confirmed.

Drinking cherry juice can significantly

reduce high blood pressure, particularly
in males with early hypertension, to a
level comparable to that achieved by
medication.
New research has found that high blood
pressure if left untreated, increases risk
of heart attack, heart failure, kidney
disease, stroke or dementia.
The findings showed that men who
drank tart Montmorency cherry juice a variety of sour cherry - saw a peak
reduction in their blood pressure of
seven millimetre of mercury (mmHg)
in the three hours after consuming the
drink.
"This reduction is comparable to the
level achieved by anti-hypertensive
drugs," the researchers said.
When phenolic acids, protocatechuic
and vanillic - compounds present
within the cherry concentrate - reached
their peak levels in the plasma, systolic
blood pressure showed greatest
improvement.
"The magnitude of the blood pressure
lowering effects we observed was

comparable to those achieved by a

single anti-hypertensive drug and
highlights the potential importance
that Montmorency cherries could
have in the effective management of
high blood pressure," said lead author
Karen Keane, lecturer at Northumbria
University in Britain.
Raised blood pressure is the leading
cause of deaths from heart diseases,
yet relatively small reductions in blood
pressure can have a large impact on
mortality rates, Keane added.
The team worked with fifteen
participants who were displaying early
hypertension with blood pressure
readings of at least 130/90 mm Hg,
meaning they were at higher risk of
experiencing heart related problems.
They were given either 60 ml of a
Montmorency cherry concentrate or
the same amount of a commercially
available fruit-flavoured cordial.
Blood pressure and blood samples were
taken before the cherry concentrate
was consumed and blood pressure was
measured on an hourly basis thereafter.

Veteran Actor Om
Puri Passes Away

Veteran Indian actor Om Puri died on

Friday morning of a heart attack at
his Andheri residence, a family friend
said. He was 66.
2017, why did you have to start on
such a bad note? Just when we thought
of enjoying the first proper weekend
of the year, we hear the news that the
National award winning actor Om Puri
is no longer among us, mere mortals.
Om Puri passed away, after a severe
heart attack, at the age of 66, alone
at his house. 66 is just not an age
for such legends to depart from this
world, but then that has happened.
Om Puri was known for his roles in
the parallel cinema movement that
gained prominence during the 80s,
with movies like Mandi, Arohan,
Mirch Masala, Aakrosh, Jaane Bhi Do
Yaaron. He was also known for his
versatility, with his comedy roles also
getting great appreciation in movies
like Chachi 420, Hera Pheri, Deewane
Huye Paagal, Singh is King, and others.
Even the West took note of his talent
and gave him meaty roles in films like
Wolf, The Ghost and The Darkness,
Charlie Wilsons War, East is East and
its sequel West is West. An actor will

be missed!
Om Puris body was taken to Trishul
around 3 p.m. and the funeral is being
held at Oshiwara electric crematorium
from 6 p.m. His last rites have been
attended by many of his colleagues,
friends and family members. Vidya

Kabir Khan arrived at the residence as
soon as they revived the unfortunate
news. Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek
Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar, Anil Kapoor,
Nawazuddin Siddiqui have arrived for
his last rites to pay their respects to the
departed veteran actor.
The actor has appeared in mainstream
Bollywood cinema as well as Pakistani,
British and Hollywood films. The actor

Shri, the fourth highest civilian award
of India.
An alumnus of Film and Television

Malaika Arora Demands A SHOCKING Amount As Divorce Settlement

Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora
Khan, who were married for 18 long
years, began their divorce proceedings
a few weeks back and reportedly
Malaika has demanded a minimum
of Rs. 10-15 crore from Arbaaz as
a divorce settlement. According to
a Spotboye report, a source stated,
Thats quite an amount no doubt,
but Rs. 10 crore minimum is what
Malaika wants. And she will not
settle for anything lesser. Arbaaz has

reportedly agreed to pay the amount

over a period of time.
Their son Arhaan is allegedly going
to be staying with Malaika after the
divorce, which will reportedly be
finalised around May 2017. But that
would again depend on a lot of things,
which includes how quickly Arbaaz
and Malaika come to a common
point as far as terms and conditions
of financial settement are concerned,
adds the source.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

You have so much energy that you
inadvertently could push someone
away. A boss or higher-up can be
very manipulative. Your ability to
communicate will be emphasized.
News might not be as forthcoming as
you would like. Do more listening and
less talking.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
Zero in on your priorities. Someone
who can be quite assertive might be
pushing his or her views. Although
you might not be sure of yourself when
dealing with demanding people, you
should start working on changing that
now. Hang out wherever your friends
are.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
You might be forced to take control of
an uncomfortable situation. What you
have to work with might not be ideal,
but youll be able to work through the
problem. Just stop and reflect as much as
you need to. Be serious in your dealings

with a partner. Say yes to an offer.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)
Reach out to someone at a distance.
Understand what is happening with
a loved one. As a result, a change in
how you perceive this person might
be forthcoming. Fatigue could be a
problem by the end of the day. Take a
power nap if possible. Put your feet up.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
Though normally you are easygoing,
right now you could be offended by
someone elses rhetoric; know that
its not worth it. Revise your schedule
accordingly and bypass an issue that
you dont want handle. Take another
look at this issue later. Do only what
you want.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
Defer to others. You might want to let
someone else run with the ball. A child

Is Everything Not Well

Between Sunil And Kapil

Sunil Grover's film as a solo lead Coffee with D - is hitting screens this
Friday. As a result of that, everyone
expected Sunil to promote his film
on The Kapil Sharma Show - the
comedy chat show he's an important
part of.
But that didn't happen and many
speculated that there's been a fallout
between Kapil and Sunil, following
which Kapil didn't allow any Coffee
with D promotions on his show. Now,
Sunil has broken silence on the issue
and rubbished all such rumours.
"No..not at all. He is my friend. Kapil
is very happy that I am doing films.
There is nothing of that sort. This is
bakwaas baat. People are just saying
this for publicity," Sunil said.

"Yes, the promotion of Coffee With

D on The Kapil Sharma Show is not
happening. However, Kapil did not
refuse it. Anything of that sort did not
happen. Kapil did not say a No. There
were some issues about execution and
time crunch. The Kapil Sharma Show
is my show. I am not an outsider. I can
also have a call on my film's promotion.
It is my call that the film does not get
promoted on The Kapil Sharma Show,"
he added.
He further said, "Decisions are taken
creatively. Zakir Bhai (Zakir Hussain)
who plays D in the film did not have
the dates. This happens on many
occasions when an entire team of a film
can't make it. Clashes happen and an
episode cannot be shot."

going to hear. Head home early.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Know when you have had enough, and
speak up. Fatigue might force you to
revise your plans. Understand what is
happening with a family member. You
cant change this persons mood, so
tread carefully, as he or she could be
volatile.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
Your resourcefulness and resilience
will come through for you despite a
power play that might temporarily
squash your vision of what is possible.
You will learn from this and come back
a lot stronger. Use criticism to tighten
up a plan. Express your playfulness.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
You have a strong sense of what is
going on, but you might not be able
to describe exactly what is involved in
the process. Stay centered, and dont
worry about someone elses power
plays. A family member opens up and
shares his or her feelings.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Speak your mind, and allow greater
give-and-take between you and a
sibling or neighbour. When you
encourage flexibility, more ideas pop
up and you come up with solutions
more easily. How you present an idea
will make all the difference in how it
is received.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Be aware of your spending, and dont
become excessive. You might want
to revise your thinking as well. Do
whatever you need to do in order to
enforce self-discipline. You will be a
lot happier if you are able to say no
more often.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
You might be a lot pushier than you
realize. If you could hear yourself, you
would be put off. Try to stay on top of
others requests. A friend might try to
encourage you to do what he or she
wants. Let this person know that youll
make your own decisions.

Dispute Over Loaf Of Bread Leads To Assault, Threats

With An Axe
The owners of a dairy are upset and
shocked after a dispute over a loaf
of bread escalated to an assault and
threats from an axe-wielding woman.
The incident at Duke Street Food Mart
in Mahora, Hastings, began when a
5-year-old boy entered the dairy to buy
a loaf of bread and milk about 5pm.
The daughter of shopkeepers Paramjit
Singh and Manjit Kaur, who did not
wish to be named, said the boy returned
moments later with his older brother
carrying a loaf of "crushed bread".
"He said it wasn't in good condition but
it was perfect when we sold it. We said
we couldn't swap it.
"They left and minutes after their dad
came back, he looked angry."
The girl, who was behind the counter
with her 11-year-old brother, said
the offender grabbed several loaves
of bread and tried to leave the store
without paying.

"Mum and dad tried to stop him and

grab the bread, that's when the pushing
started."
Singh was trying to remove the man from
the shop when the offender punched
him several times in the head, causing
bruising to both eyes, police said.
Singh's wife, who had been working in
the shop, then hit the man with a stick
and he fled the scene.
A short time later, the man's partner
approached the store with an axe and
threatened the owners.
"She was swearing and holding the
axe," Singh's daughter said.
"A customer in the store started ringing
the police. The lady heard the customer
on the phone and ran away."
Police said a 26-year-old woman was
arrested and charged with possession
of an offensive weapon and threatening
behaviour. She will appear in Hastings
District Court on Monday.

"Mum and dad are upset and shocked

because it all happened so fast," the
girl told the Herald.
The woman is a regular at the dairy.
"One time she came in crying saying
'my kids are hungry, can I have some

money to feed them'," Singh's daughter

said.
"We gave her two loaves of bread and
she said she would pay us in a week."
Police are still trying to find the man
who assaulted the owner.

Australian Boy Killed In Choking 'Game'

The death of a 13-year-old Brisbane

boy in a choking "game" has sparked
warnings for parents to educate their
children about the dangers of the online
craze.
The principal of the boy's north Brisbane
Catholic school, which has not been
named at his parents' request, broke
news of the boy's death in an email on
Monday that urged parents to monitor
their children's online behaviour.
The online craze is known as "the
good boys' game" because it does not
involve drugs or alcohol.
Youngsters film themselves choking
and post the videos, not realising they
can kill themselves or cause lasting

damage.
Federation of Parents and Friends
Association of Catholic Schools in
Queensland executive director Carmel

"They are kids, they are not aware of
the dangers and the consequences, and
it really is the parents' job to talk to
kids about it and for schools to make
sure they are making parents aware,"
she told the Courier Mail.

In June last year a 12-year-old boy in
the UK died after playing the game.
Karnel Haughton was taking part in the
game in his bedroom in Birmingham,
England when he passed out.
He was found by mum Gemma and
taken to hospital but medics were
unable to save him.
It is not clear whether he was playing

A family friend named Bee Bee posted

Bee wrote: "At first we did not know

Sisters Kicked Off Flight Miss Seeing Their Dying

Dad, They Say

Two sisters said they were humiliated

when Allegiant Air kicked them off a
flight, claiming they were a threat.
I just wanted to see my dad, Debbie
Hartman told CBS Orlando affiliate
WKMG-TV.
But that never happened for Hartman
or her sister, Trisha Baker.
They two were on their way from
Orlando to Asheville, North Carolina,
Monday to visit their sick father, who
was in hospice care.
While the plane was waiting to leave
the tarmac, Hartmans sister got a text
message saying their father only had
hours to live.
I didnt know if my sister was getting
the same text and (I) was I thinking, I
need to go back and tell her, Baker
recalled.
Baker said when she got up to tell her
sister, a flight attendant stepped in.
She said, You need to sit down, and

I said, Well, can I just sit here? I just

want to console my sister. We just got
word that my dads dying, Baker
said.
Hartman said she started having a
panic attack and the situation only
escalated from there, when Baker
confronted the flight attendant for not
being compassionate.
She said, Youre being very rude.
My father is dying and Im comforting
her -- and they said she needed to keep
her personal problems off the plane,
Hartman said.
Minutes later, the sisters said, the flight
attendant called the captain, the plane
turned around and airport security
escorted them off the flight.
They told us we were a threat to the
flight. I couldnt believe it, Hartman
said.
People were like whats going on?
Hartman added.

Some passengers even took to YouTube

and complained about the situation.
That was the most inhumane,
deplorable thing Ive ever seen any
human being do, one woman said.
Hartman said their father died shortly
after -- and now she wants the airline
to be held accountable.
I would like to see them in some way
be punished in a way where people
understand. This is not humane. One
hundred thousand percent I blame
them. They were the gate between
keeping me from my father to say
goodbye, Hartman said.
I dont think they should keep their
jobs, to be honest with you, Hartman

said. They dont have heart. They

didnt care that I wasnt going to [get
to] see my dad.
WKMG emailed Allegiant Air, and the
carrier said its investigating.
The airline released a statement
saying, At Allegiant we rely on
our crew members to provide and
oversee a safe environment for every
passenger, on every flight. We expect
that authority to be exercised both
judiciously and consistently, with
empathy and with good judgment.
We take this customer feedback
seriously and are in the process of
conducting an investigation into
what occurred.

The Queen Was Almost Shot By One Of Her Own

Guards Whilst Taking A Late-Night Stroll

The Queen was nearly shot whilst

taking an early-morning stroll around
Buckingham Palace, it has been
reported.
According to The Times Diary, a former
guardsman has told of the occasion
when he was patrolling the perimeter
of the royal household at 3am when he
spotted a figure.
Instantly alert he shouted: Whos
that?
When he realised it was the Queen he
said: Bloody hell, Your Majesty, I
nearly shot you.
Fully expecting a reprimand for his
undignified language, he awaited a
response.
Her Majesty said: Thats quite all
right. Next time Ill ring through
beforehand so you dont have to shoot
me.
The Queen is apparently a fan of latenight strolls when she cant sleep.
Buckingham Palace has declined to
comment on the report.

Its unlikely the Queen, 90, will have

taken any recent strolls in the current
chilly weather as she is recovering
from a lingering heavy cold that forced
her to miss engagements over the
Christmas period.
She and the Duke of Edinburgh
had delayed their journey from
Buckingham Palace to their Norfolk
estate in the days before Christmas
after she fell ill. Other members of the
royal family attended the service at St
Mary Magdalene Church.
The Queen and her husband
traditionally spend the festive period
in Sandringham with their family
gathered around them.
She also missed the New Years Day
church service at Sandringham.
Missing these was seen as a commonsense decision which acknowledges
the Queens advancing years but
Buckingham Palace stressed the
monarch is still patron of around 600
organisations.

Woman Sued Over Her Demands For Black People

Food To Be Served At Her American Country Club

MADELEINE Pickens wanted the

African-American chef she recruited
from the country club she owns in
Southern California to cook black
people food not white people
food at her rural Nevada dude ranch
and wild horse sanctuary, according to
a federal lawsuit accusing her of racial
discrimination.
Armand Appling says the wealthy
philanthropist and ex-wife of Oklahoma
energy tycoon T. Boone Pickens told
him fried chicken, BBQ ribs and corn
bread would be perfect for the tourists
who pay nearly $US2,000 a night to
stay in plush cottages, ride horses and
take Wild West safaris on ATVs at
her Mustang Monument Wild Horse
Eco-Resort.
Appling alleges he was fired in 2014
in retaliation for complaining about
a hostile work environment. He says
Pickens stereotypical references were
commonplace at the Elko County
ranch stretching across 2330 square
kilometres on the edge of the Ruby
Mountains about 50 miles west of the
Utah line.
Among other things, he says Pickens,
who is white, instructed him to
terminate two other black kitchen
staffers one she referred to as her
bull or ox and another who had
too much personality. He says she
told him they didnt look like people
we have working at the country club
and didnt fit the image of the staff
she wanted at the ranch.
Pickens lawyers argue that even if all
the allegations are true, none of her
comments were racially motivated. At
worst, Pickens remarks reflect a non-

racial personality conflict and amount

to discourtesy, rudeness or lack of
sensitivity, they wrote in recent court
filings.
US District Judge Miranda Du said
during a hearing in Reno last week
that Applings lawyers have failed so
far to prove the sort of racial hostility
needed to win such a civil rights claim.
She dismissed the original lawsuit that
was filed in February but gave them
until January 13 to refile an amended
complaint seeking unspecified damages
from Pickens nonprofit, Save Americas
Mustangs. It takes a lot to prove these
allegations, Du told California attorney
Willie Williams on Thursday.
Du agreed with Pickens lawyer, Dora
Lane of Reno, that the only comment
that specifically referred to race
was the reference to black people
food. Lane said categorising foods
by ethnicity is commonplace in the
restaurant industry. Some restaurants
serve Mexican food, others Chinese or
Thai food, she said.
The
suggestion
that
such
categorisations are inherently offensive
is nonsense, Lane argued in earlier
court documents. This is especially
true here, given that Pickens alleged
comments actually reflect a preference
for black people food rather than a
racial animas against black people
or black people food. Williams said
Pickens comments about the fired
employees not fitting in reinforces a
long history of African-Americans not
being allowed into elite, private-club
settings. Pickens owns the exclusive
Del Mar Country Club north of San
Diego where Appling worked before

she hired him for a five-month stint in

Nevada.
In many cases, the people fighting to
keep African-Americans out of these
private clubs would use code phrases
like they do not fit the image,
Williams said in court documents. He
added the use of the words ox and
bull implies ownership of property,
given Americas long history of
slavery where they were considered
personal property of their owners.
Lane argued it was a complimentary
reference to physical strength and was
not accompanied by any overtly racial
slurs. Indeed, Appling does not
allege that he ever heard any overtly
racial epithets, such as the N-word,
she wrote in court documents.
But Williams told the judge last week
the comments must be viewed in the
context of racial stereotypes.

Du agreed that Lanes arguments

focus on the plain meaning of words
while seemingly ignoring the context
of comments made about AfricanAmericans in history and stereotypes
that could give rise to racial animas.
If the alleged comments were not
directed at him, but others who look
like him, it may affect his work
environment, the judge said.
In an unrelated matter Pickens
has offered a $10,000 reward for
information leading to and the arrest
and conviction of the people or persons
who slaughtered a number of the wild
horses on her ranch.
In a media release on her website
she said powers in Congress and the
Bureau of Land Management, the
federal agency that manages the wild
horses, have never supported her ranch
and her project.

Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooter A Passenger On

Canadian Flight
5 dead, 8 wounded in shooting at
Florida airport

People spilled onto the tarmac, some

carrying luggage, and some ran from
both Terminals 1 and 2, hiding behind
cars or anything else they could find to
shield themselves.
Video posted on Instagram appeared
to show several people wounded in
the baggage claim area of the terminal.
One person appeared to be lying in a
pool of blood with a head wound.
Paramedics could also be seen treating
a bleeding victim outside the airport.
Hundreds of people stood on the
tarmac as an ambulance drove by.
Flights already in the air and headed for
the airport were delayed or diverted,
and those that had yet to take off for
Fort Lauderdale were held on the
ground.
John Schilcher told Fox News said
he came up to the baggage claim and
heard the first gunshot as he picked up
his bag off a carousel.
"The person next to me fell to the
ground and then I started hearing
other pops. And as this happened,
other people started falling and you
could hear it and smell it, and people
on either side of me were going down
and I just dropped to the ground," said
Schilcher, who was there with his wife
and mother-in-law.
"The firing just went on and on," he
said. He said the gunman emptied
his weapon and reloaded, and "it was
eerily quiet."
"I was down on the floor, when we
finally looked up there was a policeman
standing over me," Schilcher said.
"That's when I assumed it was safe."

A gunman opened fire in the baggage

claim area at the Fort Lauderdale
airport, killing five people and
wounding eight before being taken into
custody in an attack that sent panicked
passengers running out of the terminal
and onto the tarmac, authorities said.
Authorities gave no details on a
possible motive for the shooting.
"People started kind of screaming and
trying to get out of any door they could
or hide under the chairs," a witness,
Mark Lea, told MSNBC. "He just kind
of continued coming in, just randomly
shooting at people, no rhyme or reason
to it."
Then the attacker threw down his
weapon and lay spread-eagle on the
ground until he was taken into custody,
Lea said.
Chip LaMarca, a Broward County
commissioner, was briefed on the
airport shooting by Broward Sheriff's
office. He told The Associated Press
that the shooter had arrived in Fort
Lauderdale aboard a Canadian flight
with a gun in a checked bag.
"After he claimed his bag, he went into
the bathroom and loaded the gun and
started shooting. We don't know why,"
LaMarca said.
Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida identified
the gunman as Esteban Santiago and
said that he was carrying a military ID,
but that it was unclear whether it was
his.
"We don't know a motive at this

point," Nelson said. "This could well

be someone who is mentally deranged,
or in fact it could be someone who had
a much more sinister motive that we
have to worry about every day, and
that is terrorism. We can't conclude
that."
President Barack Obama was briefed
by his Homeland Security adviser, the
White House said.
The attack took place at Terminal 2,
which serves Delta Air Lines and Air
Canada.
Lea said the gunman said nothing as
he "went up and down the carousels of
the baggage claim, shooting through

Police in India have detained at least

six suspects after outrage erupted
over several women being groped
and molested during New Year's Eve
celebrations in the southern city of
Bangalore.
City police first denied any incidents
of sexual harassment had taken place
during the late-night celebrations.
But on Wednesday, police officer
Hemant Nimbalkar said at least six men
were detained after several video clips
of women being attacked by groups of
men went viral on social media.
The attacks highlighted the persistent

violence against women in India

despite tougher laws against sexual
assault imposed after the December
2012 death of a young woman who
was gang-raped on a bus in New Delhi.
One senior state Government minister
said the New Year's incidents took
place because the women were acting
like Westerners, implying that their
attire had provoked the attacks.
The police had earlier said no one had
come forward to file a complaint about
the incidents.
Since then, at least one woman has
come forward to speak of how she was

molested on the night.

Others have said they saw women
being molested or groped, and that
revellers were making lewd remarks,
even as the state Government said
that more than 1,500 police personnel
had been deployed to control the
crowds.
The young woman who came forward,
Chaitali Wasnick, told NDTV news
that she was heading home at around
1:30 am and became suspicious when
two men approached her.
"So I just moved aside, I let them pass,"
she said, adding that one man began to

grope her.
"I did not have any idea that he'd do
that, so I went totally blank," Ms
Wasnick said, adding that no one came
to help her and there were no police
personnel around.
As Bangalore newspapers published
images of several women who were
allegedly groped or attacked, the state's
home minister, G. Parameshwara,
criticised young women for "copying
the Westerners, not only in their
mindset, but even in their dressing".
"These kind of things do happen," he
told reporters.

A FRIGHTENED worker at a
Beaudesert sandwich store barricaded
herself inside the restaurant yesterday
after a naked man took refuge in an
outdoor dining area.
The man who appeared to have

brought in the new year with too much

revelry was spotted taking a naked
stroll down Mt Lindesay Hwy late in
the afternoon on New Years Day.
After walking some distance, the man
climbed a wall and hid in the stores

outdoor dining area usually only

accessible through the restaurant.
A woman working inside called police
and her father for help and locked
herself inside.
Her father arrived before police and

confronted the man, who did a naked

vault over a side fence and fled.

luggage to get at people that were

hiding." The killer had a handgun and
went through about three magazines of
ammunition, Lea said.
Sheriff Scott Israel said five people
were killed and eight were wounded.
Their condition was not disclosed.
He said the gunman was arrested
unharmed, with no law enforcement
officers firing any shots, and was being
questioned by the FBI.
The airport suspended operations as
law enforcement authorities rushed
to the scene and emergency medical
workers treated at least one bleeding
victim on the tarmac.

Life After Rugby

In this new day and age, rugby players
need to change their way of thinking
and not only plan out their rugby career
but also their life after rugby.
These were the sentiments shared by
former Flying Fijians pivot Seremaia
Bai, who is the founder of the new
Rugby Academy Fiji, which was
launched in Wailada, Lami.
The main focus of the academy is to
not only develop players but to also
train them and change their way of
thinking to also think about life after
they retire from their profession.
Bai said players did not know the tough
transition from being a rugby player to
living a normal life with normal pay.
The academy will be a way to educate
players to prepare for life after rugby
and have a smooth transition into a
normal life.
I am not doing this academy as a
normal academy, this will be a high
performance academy and it has got to
start with the mindset, Bai said.
My biggest advice to players overseas
and locally, never ever use rugby to get
a lot of money, use rugby to become a
better person.
At the end of the day rugby will be
finished, no one can play rugby for the
rest of their lives so the question is,
what after rugby?
When we play and wear the Fiji

jumper once we leave, no one cares

because they have no idea the transition
from being a professional rugby player
to living a normal life.
That is something I am trying to
educate these younger players on,
which is they have to prepare for life
after rugby. There is a big difference
when you are getting $10,000 a month
to maybe $1000 if you are lucky and
that is the reality.
I can guarantee that most of the
professional rugby players are
struggling. Almost 80 per cent of them
are struggling, it is sad but that is the
truth.
There is a transition from playing
rugby to after you retire, the salary will
not be the same and if you do not have
a set plan, things can get stressful.
While you are playing rugby you need
to invest and save as much as possible
because 10 years is the maximum
number of years a person is able to play
rugby. You need to think about the rest
of your life.
Nothing is ever guaranteed in rugby,
every player is just one training session
away from getting injured. And once
you are injured your value drops and it
will be difficult to get back on track.
Setting up the rugby academy is Bais
way of giving back to the community.
Nutrition, conditioning

Roy Krishna Sees Red

FIJI football captain Roy Krishna,
playing in New Zealand for Wellington
Phoenix, was shown a red card for a
foul on a Perth Glory player during
their match at NIB Stadium in Perth,
Australia on Thursday night.
Krishna climbed up the ranks after
starting from the age-group football in
Fiji and then moved to Waitakere City
and Auckland City.
Since 2014, he made more than 60

appearances for Wellington Phoenix.

The Siberia, Labasa man scored the
opening goal in the 11th minute of the
match scoring past goalkeeper Liam
Reddy.
However, the lead was short-lived with
an equaliser from Rostyn Griffiths on
the half-time mark.
Glory came out strongly in the second
half and they were determined to win
the match and kept trying their luck on
the Phoenix goal-mouth.
Glory player Adam Taggart found the
net in the 51st minute of the match.
Phoenix was reduced to 10 men
when Krishna was shown a red card
by referee Shaun Evans in the 62nd
minute.
According to Stuff.com.nz the decision
was to harsh.
"He was late with his challenge on a
Glory defender, but it looked a run-ofthe-mill booking, not a straight red,"
the website reported.
"The Phoenix will be without their
leading scorer for their next match
against Central Coast on January 14
unless the club can successfully appeal
the decision."
Krishna was one of the instrumental
players for Fiji as he scored the
country's first goal at the 2016 Olympic
Games in Rio, Brazil against Mexico.
He is also part of the Fiji team for
the World Cup qualifiers against New
Zealand in March and New Caledonia
in May.

He wants to educate players on the

importance of proper nutrition and
having the right environment to grow.
I think this is something that we are
lacking, strength and conditioning,
also the mentality of the players, he
said.
You not only need to train to be fitter
but you need to be smart. I realised,
in Fiji when the Fijian players go
overseas they become more muscular
because of the environment they are in,
they eat properly at the right times and
they sleep well, they are training the
way they should be training.
I think this is the one thing we are

lacking which is technical thinking, it

comes with a good mindset.
This is a big thing for me, we have
natural talent and if we educate players
on what recovery is, what nutrition
is and how to eat properly and stay
hydrated and also getting the right
amount of sleep, we could see a big
change.
Rugby is not only about results and
playing on the field, it is more than
that. What I teach the young children
these days is dont train for rugby, train
for life. Not everything is about rugby
because once rugby is finished most
people stop training.

I Will Always Back Suva Prasad

Outgoing Suva Football Association

president, Mahend Prasad, said he is
still going to support the association
despite his resignation.
Prasad who announced his resignation
last month will hand over his post
during the SFAs annual general
meeting (AGM) on January 14.
I will remain with Suva and will offer
my services whenever it is needed, he
said.
I will ensure that a capable person is
appointed in the AGM.
Prasad has requested all clubs to submit
their nomination for the presidents
post.

Nomination will close on January 7,

he added.
Prasad has been the SFA president
for eight years. Under his leadership
Suva have won the Courts Inter
District Championship title, Vodafone
Premier League and Vodafone Fiji
FACT titles.
The Whites also became the first team
from the Southern Division to represent
Fiji to the OFC Champions League.
It is difficult for me to leave Suva but
my time is up as I have done enough.
Suva is now a very strong side and I
know that whoever is appointed will do
the job.
