GOLD STAR RATING! We have been on a serious mission to

share the GOOD NEWSpaper with other communities and could
not have accomplished this goal without our fellow neighbors. Recently, we spent several nights at the Homewood Suites by Hilton
located at 5996 Audubon Drive, Sandston, Virginia (near the
Richmond International Airport). The services we received were
OUTSTANDING! Not only were all the staff members professional and friendly (including Teresa, Jimytha, and shuttle bus
driver, Ramy), but they made sure we were completely satisfied!
Additionally, our newspaper was displayed in the lobby and many
travelers were more than willing to share them with their communities. Thanks to all staff members of Homewood Suites by

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE

(Continued) The abuse continued and one night I got the STRENGTH
TO LEAVE! However, he had other ideas! He choked me and grabbed
me back in the house. I blacked out and came to hearing my child
screaming! I survived that night and decided something very hard: I
sent my son to his father and my girls to my mother. I tried to free myself from him. Like most people, when you try your hardest, it seems
like you fall far further than you ever imagined.
October 15, 2008, I could have died! My husband broke into my house;
and I woke up to him choking me. He grabbed our daughter and continued to beat, stump, and spit on mewhile she was in his arms. He
hit me with a ceramic mug three (3) times and cracked my skull. He
continued to kick and hit me (our struggled continued). Again
FAITH! I survived this night; however, it was at a great cost. A CT
scan showed a cracked skull and swelling of the brain. I had to have
several staples in a Y-shape, had bruises, broken teeth, and almost bled
to death! I lost my apartment due to the reminders of the evening. I
couldnt return to work. I lost my truckandmy pride. I LOST
EVERYTHING! God stripped me down to the core! I sought help
through DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DISPLACEMENT. It forced me to
seek assistance through WIC, food stamps, Medicaidand
n-o c-h-i-l-d s-u-p-p-o-r-t. It forced me to really look at my situation.
Why were the men in my life abusing me? This was by far the worse
situation I had been in and the most bodily harm. I did not want to continue this PATTERN OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. I did not want my
children to learn this behavior.

Story

Under Pressure Diamonds Are Formed

There are all types of survivors as there are many struggles in life. Sometimes all we see is the finished product. As I stand here before you today,
you may think my road was smooth, but I could not be here with you today
if it wasnt for my FAITH. If you know me, I am infatuated with diamondsnot that I have manyjust how they are formed! A diamond
starts out as a lump of coal. A diamond isnt a diamond until it withstands
an extreme amount of pressure. The pressure makes it shine! So my
subject for today is Under Pressure Diamonds are Formed. I hope I can
inspire all of you to SHINE!
A person is made up of all of their experiences, their surroundings, and
the people in their life. When I was six (6) months old, my father suffered
a stroke. I saw my mother not only care for my father, but work several
jobs. My mom worked at Lipton Tea until she retired. She worked fulltime overnight; then she would come home, drive me to school, then come
back to care for my dad before getting some rest to provide for our family.
My grandfather moved in with us during his last stages of Alzheimers.
During his final stages, he was aggressive at times. He was with us a few
months before he passed. Over the years, my fathers health deteriorated;
and I began working at the age of 15 to contribute to my family financially. As an adult, I tried to live by the bible, but like most of us, the
devil was very busy. I set out my adult journey with stars in my eyes and
the sun on my face.
In 2001 I lost my father and my first child (I was 19 years old). Losses so
greatless than six (6) months apart. I lost my way! I strayed away. I
began to question my FAITH. I got married in 2002 and again, tried to
live by the bible. I put my FAITH in my marriage. I learned I was pregnant againnot with just one baby, but with two! My excitement was
short-lived as the doctor told me neither baby had a heartbeat. I went into
a deep depression! I was working trying to provide for my husband. This
is what I thought a woman was supposed to dobe the breadwinner! I
thought I would never have another child. The Lord BLESSED ME with
a child, but that too came with a great pricemandatory bed rest for 14
weeks, an infection, and the doctor advising they could save my baby
but I would die! My FAITHLordMy FAITH was on a rollercoaster!
I was scared out of my mind and feeling so alone. My daughter was born
at 28 weeks and weighed 2 pounds 10 ounces; and I LIVED TO TELL
THE STORY! FAITH the size of a mustard seed got me through; however,
I did not save my marriage. Tryingtrying to live right-- I got married
again. This man was a game changerand not in a good way! The devil
was still busy! He showed up and showed out! My husband cheated on
me 59yes59 days into the marriage (his mistress called me directly).
I confronted him; and he did not resemble the man I married. He began
hitting me, degrading me, intimidating me, playing mind games, and controlling me! All of this happened in front of my children. I never wanted
this life. I asked God to protect me. Before I could get the prayer out, he
was verbally abusing me and threatening to kill me. I remember learning
the POWER OF LORD HAVE MERCY! I was afraidvery afraid! I
wondered, Lord, what did I do to deserve this? Will I ever find a man
who will love me for me, be true to me, and treat me how I am supposed
to be treated? My parents didnt live like this! I tried to leave but failed.
His abuse became more physical!
I didnt reach out. I was confused, embarrassed, and feared for my life!

I NEEDED TO LEARN MY WORTH!

I HAD TO FIND MY WAY BACK TO A DEEPER FAITH!
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES In 2011 I was diagnosed with a rare
incurable disease called Lymphedema in both legs. Lymphedema is
swelling in one or more extremities that results from impaired flow of
the lymphatic system. Three doctor consults advised nothing could be
done after two surgeries to my ankle. I was told my left ankle was deteriorating, I would never be able to walk for long periods, run, and
would always be in pain. Morphine was the pain reliever of choice
givenBUT GOD! When there were times I could not see the light at
the end of the tunnel, GOD SAW ME! At every turn, HE put me in a
position to remind me HOW GREATFAITHFULNESS! Every time
I hear and think of this song, I think of the things Ive been through, the
mistakes I made, the not so good choicesand that THE LORD WAS
ALWAYS FAITHFUL TO MEeven when I wasnt to Him. Day-byday new mercies I see all that I have needed along the way. HE always
sent someone or some way to help me. HAS THE LORD BEEN GOOD
TO YOU? The song says Strength for Today and Bright Hope for Tomorrow. I am so thankful GOD is a forgiving GOD! HE has brought
me a mighty long way! Although people here walking on this Earth
may not allow me to forget, THE LORD MAKES ME WHOLE AND
ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD IN FAITH IN MY JOURNEY! Psalm
66:10 states: For you, God, tested us. You refined us like silver. The
fire I was in surely was hot; but in time, I began to see the refinement!
In 2010 I left the displacement location and went straight into homeownership! For two years I worked as a PCA taking care of people in
their homes. In 2011 I got married to my husband and together we
reared three beautiful children. To date, I have learned to live with
and control my lymphedema swelling! I walk miles! I run! I am the
controller of my pain! I no longer allow it to control me! You see
THROUGH FAITH, HARD WORK AND PASSIONI was able to
combine it all and open A Plus Home Health Care (see ad on page 7).
I love my company! It allows me to help people; my clients and staff
are more than a number to me--they are family! It is a BLESSING to
be able to employ others who may be in similar situations, to work hard
and to persevere! So today I stand here before you: A DIAMOND IN
MY OWN MIND! The pressure has been immense! Dont get me
wrongI am still under pressure being polished! In closing, I want you
to know you can make the rest of your life the best days of your life.
You dont have to forget where you came from (the struggle, the sacrifice and heartache). Use that as a catalyst to get where you want to be.
You can use government assistance as a stepping stoneit is not a
stopping point! Find your passion and find your gift! The only person
who can defeat youis you! We are all survivors! Use your story (your
testimony) to uplift someone who is where you once were. Each and
every person has a diamond! We are in different stages of being formed
and polished. Have the strength and courage to lift yourself closer to
what the Lord has in store for you. I found my giftso can you! Last
but certainly not least, I am proud of where I came from. I hope you are
motivated to take control of your life! Get ready to shine bright!

No matter how many cuts your diamond has

YOU WILL ALWAYS SHINE!

BE OPEN TO GIVE AND RECEIVE LOVE

Happy New Year to everyone! A reader asked: What Can I Do to Have
a Better New Year? I had to think long and hard about this question
and my response is: Be open to give and receive LOVE. During the
holiday season I experienced and saw so many acts of love and kindness.
People were just so nice and kind to each other. I wondered why cant
this continue throughout the entire year. There is no reason why it cant.
We have to make conscious efforts to be loving, kind and thoughtful of
our fellow human beings. We are living in a world that can often be
harsh and difficult, but we can overcome it with Love! A song sung by
Dionne Warwick comes to mind: What the World Needs Now is Love
Sweet Love. Its the only thing that theres just too little of. Then there
is the Beatles song: All You Need is Love and so the theme of LOVE
is found in so many other songs. Love can be given in so many different
ways and usually wont cost you anything. Many people think of love
only in the context of personal relationships with family and friends
that is so confining. Expand your definition of Love. Love can be letting
go and letting someone help you with a problem or task you need to tackle (this is for the I have to do everything myself personality); Love is
random acts of kindness, such as smiling! And when you ask someone
How are you?-- please mean it and stop to listen to the person. Also,
remember that forgiveness is Love.
Let go of current or past hurtsthey serve no purpose and are a negative
in your life. Consider the words of Mahatma Gandhi: I will be truthful.
I will suffer no injustice. I will be free from fear. I will use no force. I
will be of goodwill to all men. So for 2017 and beyond, let your mantra
be: I Will Be Open and Mindful to Give and Receive LOVE!

A Success!
Greater
Richmond ARC
Received 454 New
Childrens
Books!
51 Families
Attended
the Event!
In true keeping with the holiday, the Greater Richmond ARC received
donations of 454 new childrens books that were distributed during its
annual holiday party for children with disabilities and their families on
December 6, 2016. New books were collected by ARC and the bookstore bbgb located in Carytown (3003 W. Cary Street, Richmond, VA),
which offered patrons a 15% discount on any book purchased for the
childrens party, and also donated more than 100 books from their own
bbgb stock. A total of 51 families attended the event at ARC, including
104 children who received books as gifts. I know the families were
just thrilled, said ARCs Infant and Child Development Services Program Director, Cara Coffman. A book is a gift that everyone in a
family can enjoy together as they appeal to the child in all of us. We
were very glad to participate in this worthy cause, added Jill Stefanovich, co-owner of bbgb. Books are a passport to new adventures; and
we were very glad to share in this journey. The Greater Richmond ARC
creates life-fulfilling opportunities for individuals with disabilities. For

I have heard a lot of talk about the epidemic of

addition in our area and in our country lately. I
know that its going to be a long and difficult road
to correct this. What I wanted to talk about today
is The Other Side of That Coin: RECOVERY.
I will not lie and say that it has been an easy journey. I have been through a lot, but I can say that
with the help of my Home Group, Sponsor, Network, and most importantly My Higher Power, I
am living a wonderfulfull life! There are three
(3) main things I do to keep recovery in my life:
Prayer, Service, and Sponsorship. Prayer is the
most important thing in my life. I pray throughout the day in addition to first thing in the morning and at night. This is the way I ensure I am
keeping in contact with my Higher Power. My
sponsor recently suggested that when faced with
a difficult time, I should invite my HP to precede
me. When I sit down at my desk at work, I ask
Him to sit with me. When I head into a meeting,
I ask Him to come in before me. It may sound
silly, but it works! I have a lot of ego and I recently had to try throwing it away before walking into
a meeting or situation because it could get in my
way. That advice has also helped me a lot! SERVICE is truly the key to a successful recovery! In the past I had a service position in my
home group and while that was good, it pales
comparison to helping alcoholics as I do in my
current home group. We take meetings into recovery hospitals, into prisons, and to the hospital.
We try to reach out to alcoholics that are in need
of us the mostand it is very rewarding! I never
realized when I was drinking how extremely selfish I wasand now I get to set myself aside and
help someone else by simply sharing my experience, strength and HOPE. The last thing I
want to talk about today is SPONSORSHIP. I
have had several sponsors in my time in AA (alcoholics anonymous) and each time that person
brought something very special to my recovery
something I needed at that time. Im so happy to
have someone who has taken this journey before
me to show me the way! Im also very honored
to be able to do that for the next woman in the
room! RECOVERY IS NOT THE EASIEST JOURNEY,

Meet Albert Ruffin

Ruffin Insurance Agency
Albert Ruffin is the owner of Ruffin Insurance Agency, a full-service insurance agency established in June 1996. The Agency, which offers auto,
home, life and commercial policies has been a prominent fixture on Nine
Mile Road in eastern Henrico for more than 20 years. When he first started
in the industry, many relied on an insurance agent as a middle man between
the client and the insurance companies. As the popularity of doing business
online grew over the years, many chose not to go through an agency. They
chose, instead, to get their insurance directly with the company. Says Mr.
Ruffin, While this may save you money, you must realize that no one is
looking out for your best interest. You may choose coverage that leaves you
exposed to losses. By going through an agent, you can be assured that the
agent is reviewing your coverage to make sure it is right for you and your
needs. Albert Ruffin has over two decades of insurance knowledge to pass
on to his clients. Born and reared on Richmonds Northside, he is a graduate
of Thomas Jefferson High School and Virginia Union University and is a
lifelong member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon. Mr.
Ruffin is also a member of the Two Twelve Business Networking Group (Go
Getters); and he is active in our community. For the past five years, he has
sponsored an annual endowed scholarship on the campus of Virginia Union
University. Several deserving students have received this award. He also
helps nonprofit organizations by providing a unique fundraising opportunity
in collaboration with the Heritage Ensemble Theatre Company several times
each year. Groups and nonprofit organizations may purchase blocks of tickets for a special performance by this local theater company that features a
reception and talk-back with the cast and crew. Not only does this provide
fundraising opportunities for community groups, but it helps the theater company to develop an audience and provides an educational outreach to the
community.

First Lady of Virginia Kicks Off
City 2017 Pet License Programs

First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe & Guinness

with RACC Director Christie Chipps Peters
and Officer Jones

Virginias First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe kicked off the City of Richmonds
2017 Pet License Program by purchasing a city pet license for her dogs, Guinness and Daisy. The First Ladys pets were the honorary recipients of tags
number 1 and 2 for 2017.
All cats and dogs living in the City of Richmond are required to be licensed and have a current Rabies vaccination. Further, this legally required
form of identification is your best friends most valuable asset in getting home
safely should they become lost.
Each year, Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC) receives over 3,000
animals, yet the vast majority of them have no form of identification to assist
RACC in reuniting pets to their families. Your pet cant tell RACC where they
live, so speak for them by purchasing a pet license today.
City of Richmond residents are required to purchase a license for each
pet that is owned. Attach the license tag to your pets collar. This simple
step ensures that if someone finds your pet wearing its registered license tag
whether a citizen or animal control officer they will know immediately that
the animal is lost and belongs to YOU!
The cost of a pet license is $10 for each cat or dog and must be renewed
yearly. Please visit www.richmondgov.com/AnimalControl/PetLicense for more
information and locations where you can purchase your 2017 license.
