Heart Rate Experimental Design 4.2.

1
Rachel Twitty and Carter McInnis
1. Identify the Problem or Question
How will different actions affect heart rate?
2. Predict a solution to the problem or an answer to the question.
If different actions are performed, then heart rate will increase compared to original
heart rate.
Independent Variable: actions performed
Dependent Variable: heart rate
3. Design the experiment to be used to test your hypothesis.

Control: heart rate before performing any activities
1. Determine heart rate before performing any actions
2. Do jumping jacks for thirty seconds
3. Determine heart rate
4. Allow heart rate to slow
5. Hold breath for 1 minute
6. Determine heart rate
7. Allow heart rate to slow then repeat steps 2-6 for two more trials
8. Determine average heart rate for all trials and record in data table

6. State the conclusion.

The hypothesis was correct, after different actions were performed the heart rate
increased.
7. Summary Paragraph
Through various trials of the experiment, it was determined that the
hypothesis was correct. The data that supports this statement is as follows. The

cardiovascular system was tested to determine the active heart rate of an

individual after performing certain actions. After each action was performed, the
individuals heart rate increased. This shows that the actions performed caused
stress on the heart, therefore the heart rate increased. Thus, proving the
hypothesis as correct.
After step #7
-After performing this experiment, it was proven that certain actions increase heart rate.
To further this research, another test could be run determining which actions increased
the heart rate the most.
