2. Practiced hand hygiene.
3. Collected the following:
 Denture brush or toothbrush (for cleaning dentures)
 Denture cup labeled with the persons name and room and
bed number
 Denture cleaning agent
 Soft-bristled toothbrush or sponge swabs (for oral hygiene)
 Toothpaste
 Water cup with cool water
 Straw
 Mouthwash (or other noted solution)
 Kidney basin
 2 hand towels
 Gauze squares
 Paper towels
 Gloves
4. Placed the paper towels on the over-bed table. Arranged items
on top of them.
5. Identified the person. Checked the ID (identification) bracelet
against the assignment sheet. Used 2 identifiers. Also called the
person by name.
6. Provided for privacy.

Procedure
7. Lined the bottom of the sink with a towel. Did not use paper
towels. Filled the sink half-way with water.
8. Raised the bed for body mechanics.
9. Lowered the bed rail near you if up.
10. Practiced hand hygiene. Put on gloves.
11. Placed the towel over the persons chest.
12. Asked the person to remove the dentures. Carefully placed them
in the kidney basin.
13. Removed the dentures if the person could not do so. Used gauze
squares to get a good grip on the slippery dentures.
a. Grasped the upper denture with your thumb and index finger.
Moved it up and down slightly to break the seal. Gently
removed the denture. Placed it in the kidney basin.
b. Grasped and removed the lower denture with your thumb and
index finger. Turned it slightly and lifted it out of the persons
mouth. Placed it in the kidney basin.
14. Followed the care plan for raising side rails.
15. Took the kidney basin, denture cup, denture brush, and denture
cleaning agent to the sink.

16. Rinsed the denture cup and lid.


17. Rinsed each denture under cool or warm running water.
Followed center policy for water temperature.
18. Returned dentures to the kidney basin.
19. Applied the denture cleaning agent to the brush.
20. Brushed the dentures. Brushed the inner, outer, and chewing
surfaces and all surfaces that touched the gums.
21. Rinsed the dentures under running water. Used warm or cool
water as directed by the cleaning agent manufacturer.
22. Placed dentures in the denture cup. Covered the dentures with
cool or warm water. Followed center policy for water temperature.
23. Cleaned the kidney basin.
24. Took the denture cup and kidney basin to the over-bed table.
25. Lowered the bed rail if up.
26. Positioned the person for oral hygiene.
27. Cleaned the persons gums and tongue. Brushed any natural teeth.
Used toothpaste and the toothbrush (or sponge swab).
28. Had the person use mouthwash (or noted solution). Held the
kidney basin under the chin.
29. Asked the person to insert the dentures. Inserted them if the
person could not.
a. Held the upper denture firmly with your thumb and index
finger. Raised the upper lip with the other hand. Inserted the
denture. Gently pressed on the denture with your index fingers
to make sure it was in place.
b. Held the lower denture with your thumb and index finger.
Pulled the lower lip down slightly. Inserted the denture.
Gently pressed down on it to make sure it was in place.
30. Placed the denture cup in the top drawer of the bedside stand if
the dentures were not worn. The dentures were in water or in a
denture soaking solution.
31. Wiped the persons mouth. Removed the towel.
32. Removed and discarded the gloves. Practiced hand hygiene.
