Practiced hand hygiene.
Obtained a transfer/gait belt of the correct type and size.
Identified the person. Checked the identification (ID)
bracelet against the assignment sheet. Used 2 identifiers.
Also called the person by name.
5. Provided for privacy.

Procedure
6. Assisted the person to sitting position.
7. Applied the belt. Held the belt by the buckle. Wrapped the belt
around the persons waist. Applied the belt over clothing.
Did not apply it over bare skin.
a. For a belt with a metal buckle:
1) Inserted the belts metal tip into the buckle. Passed the
belt through the side with the teeth first.
2) Brought the belt tip across the front of the buckle.
Inserted the tip through the buckles smooth side.
b. For a belt with a quick-release buckle, pushed the belt ends
together to secure the buckle.
8. Tightened the belt so it was snug. It did not cause discomfort
or impair breathing. You were able to slide your open, flat hand
under the belt. Asked the person about his or her comfort.
9. Made sure that a womans breasts were not caught under the belt.
10. Placed the buckle off-center in the front or off-center in the back
for the persons comfort. A quick-release buckle was turned
around to the persons back out of his or her reach. The buckle
was not over the spine.
11. Tucked any excess strap into the belt.
12. Completed the transfer or ambulation procedure. Grasped the
belt from underneath with 2 hands. Or grasped the belt by
the handles.

Post-Procedure
13. Removed the belt after completing the transfer or ambulation.
The person was not left alone wearing the belt.
a. For a belt with a metal buckle:
1) Brought the belt strap back through the buckles
smooth side.
2) Pulled the belt through the side with the teeth.
b. For a belt with a quick-release buckle, pushed inward on
the quick-release buttons.
c. Removed the belt from the persons waist. Avoided
dragging the belt across the waist.
14. Provided for comfort.
15. Placed the call light and other needed items within reach.
