Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronization to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Brainstorm / mind map (add extra pages if necessary)

Attach a 400-word treatment of your idea

Girl comes home from school, goes into the kitchen and notices a newspaper on the
table this part of the advert isnt in stop motion, it becomes stop motion when she
picks up the newspaper. She picks up the newspaper, reads a little bit but gets bored
so crumbles the newspaper up into her hand. The girl opens her hand and now has
post-it notes, she rolls two post-it notes up in her hand and places them on the table
horizontally, she slides both post-it notes out in different directions to each other and
there a pen. She grabs a note book and draws a bird, but she did something wrong,
so she draws a rubber, picks the rubber up and erases her mistake. The image she
drew (the bird) comes to life and flys away.
All the stationary used in the advert will be from WHSmiths and have the logo on
them. The advert ends looking up at the blue sky, where the logo will come up.
Budget
Camera - 35 per day (https://www.hireacamera.com/en-gb/products/HAC00-00212canon-eos-7d/ )
Lighting - 11.50 per day (https://www.hireacamera.com/en-gb/products/HAC0000360-litepanels-micro-pro/ )
Tripods - 8.00 per day (https://www.hireacamera.com/en-gb/products/HAC00-00241manfrotto-fluid-tripod/ )
I will be using a canon 600D for my shoot, as well as a steady tripod to keep the
shoots still and not jumpy, this will make my final production look realistic and good.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?
I will meet the requirements of my brief by keeping the audience entertained by the
happy memorable music, this is a benefit to me because by using memorable music
because the viewers will remember the advert by the music. Another requirement
is my advert is going to be 30 seconds so it doesnt really give enough time for the
audience to get bored of the content.

http://morganwpye.weebly.com/uploads/6/0/4/7/60479489/stop_moti
on_animation_production_booklet.pdf

Discuss any legal issues you may face. E.g.; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
I will be using a YouTube MP3, this in fact would be copyright, however Im using it
for educational purposes so I will be allowed to use the sound, but, if I was creating
a professional video that went viral I would have to contact the creators of the
sound and ask for their permission to use it.
Im using the WHSmiths logo, so if I was shooting the production for real life I
would have to pay them to use their logo.
There are no age restrictions for my advert, it is child friendly so the advert can be
show on TV any time of the day.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Use of possible formats

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
stop-frame techniques
time lapse photography
plasticine animation
Claymation
using found objects
modelling
puppetry
combined formats

Why are you using that particular format?

I am using objects within my stop- frame techniques, this is purely because its an advert
advertising WHSmiths stationary, so I will need to be using their branded products. My
advert will be involving a human.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
I could create a magical advert with stop motion, because you are stopping and starting the
camera then you can move something or hide something while the camera has stopped.

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e. what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
Even though doing stop motion on humans sounds easy, it can be quite hard because the
actress Im using will not be able to move between shots because it could potentially ruin my
production. This means she cant drink, eat etc.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
My stop motion animation is an advert on WHsmiths, my stop motion will be advertising the
products (Mostly stationary) they sell. It will be a happy advert for all ages to see. Its mostly
targeting school kids, teens (Primary, secondary school and college students). However, all
ages can use stationary because its widely used.

Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
My character just sits down on a chair, the camera will mostly be looking at her hands. My
character is almost like the creator of the advert though because theyre the ones using the
stationary. My character creates a lot of things but the biggest thing that happens is she
draws a bird and the bird comes to life and flys out the window.

Characters
What characters will be in your animation?
Theres not really characters in my animation advert, however there is a girl, she doesnt
have a name shes just a random average school girl. Shes still important in my animation,
this is only because she is selling the products by using them, and showing the audience
how to use them.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What will they be made of?
There human.

Movement of characters

How are you going to make your characters move?

My character is a human, she can move by herself. She is going to have to move very
slightly after every frame.

What is the purpose of an armature?

Armature is coil or rotation coils that are inside clay models. I will not be using clay models
in my advert, but if I was going to, having coil inside the clay model really helps keep the
models structure stay neat and the same throughout.

Will you use them for your characters?

No, my character can move by itself, shes a human.

If so, how will you make it?

Make my character can move herself slightly every frame.

Audio and Soundtrack

What audio will you have for your animation?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUDTFiR0TzQ I chose this music because its happy
music enhancing the happy emotion in my advert.
Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.

What actions will need sound effects?

Sound effects of the bird flying away.

Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

Audience
Define the following characteristics of your audience;
Gender
Both

Age
5 70
This is because stationary can be used upon all ages

Interests
School work, writing letter and cards, writing books, artists. Everything that involves using
stationary

What forms of animation might they already watch?

The younger ages (5 15) may be watching TV programs such as Shawn the sheep and
Wallis and Gromit which are both created by Aardman. There both stop motion.
The middle ages (16 30) may be watching CGI shows like The Simpsons and Family
Guy, they could also be watching YouTube videos which are stop motion created Youtube
channels like Pess. These stop motions have humans in.
Ages onwards will mostly be watching adult TV shows like Family Guy and American Dad
which are classed as rude animations that are CGI.

What images do you think they enjoy watching?

Stop motions that make you think to yourself How did they create that. Or stop motions
that are creative/ exiting and keep you drawn to the television screen.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What might they consider distasteful or offensive?

If there was any rude language in my advert. The parents of the children that might be
watching my advert, will most definitely think my advert is rude and inappropriate for there
age.

How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
I will need to make sure its visually pleasing and can please all the ages. It cannot have
rude language in as parents will complain that its not suitable for their children.
It must be easy to understand the selling point, so the younger population of the audience
will understand whats happening in my stop motion.

How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
The younger population of my audience will most likely be watching my advert on television.
This is because children like watching TV channels like CBBC.
The older population of my audience will most likely be watching my advert on TV and
online. This is because a lot of people watch TV, also a lot of them will be watching
YouTube videos and other online based places.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Frame Rates
What is the duration of your animation in minutes? (minimum 30 seconds)
My stop motion is going to be a total of 30 seconds.

How many frames per second for video?

5 frames per second

There are 60 seconds in a minute. How many frames (ie. Individual photos) will you
need to take?
5 x 30 = 150
there will be a total of 150 frames in my 30 second animation.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

I will be photographing my animation in a well like dining room, in a house.

Does it have natural daylight?

Yes, it has natural daylight, there are two big porch doors that let in a lot of daylight,

If so, you will need to block this out. Explain why.

I will not need to block the natural daylighting out; this is because the time of my animation
will need to be around 3:30pm which is when kids will be back from school, so there will
need to be daylight inside to make it look like my character has just come back from school.

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

There will be a white light on top of the camera Im using, this is just to enhance the
brightness in the room.

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
On top of the camera Im using (canon 600D)

Other information: Shoot the animation on a sunny day, filming must commence at 12:00 and
finish at 3:00 before it gets dark outside.

Survey
Survey has been completed on this document by 3 people
What is your age?
17, 17, 18
Do you enjoy animations?
They all responded Yes
Do adverts ever make you want to buy the product there selling?
They all responded Yes
Why do you think this is?
Because they sell their products in a way that makes their products look cool.
they make their products look more interesting.
Because they show the product better than it actually is.

Through my survey I have found out that people ages 17 and 18 all like animation adverts,
this is really good because their age group supports a lot of ages. This is because there not
young and there not old.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For example;

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
