Assignment 6
The due date for this assignment is Tuesday, December 10, 2013.
1. Two metal blocks of respective heat capacity 1 , 2 are brought into thermal contact.
Their initial temperatures are 1 and 2 , respectively, assuming 2 1 . Suppose
there is no heat loss or mechanical work involved in the process and the heat capacities
can be treated as constants. Let 0 denote the final equilibrium temperature of the
combined system. Define

(a) The second law of thermodynamics dictates that the final entropy of the combined
system must increase. Please show that this is equivalent to
ln (1 + (1 ) 2 ) ln 1 + (1 ) ln 2
(b) Show that (a) becomes
ln ( + 1 ) ln
or
+ 1
In (c) we will try to prove that this inequality indeed holds for all satisfying
0 1.

(c) Let () + 1 . By considering (1) and the behavior of please

show that () 0 for all satisfying 0 1.

2. (a) Clausius statement of the second law of thermodynamics asserts that it is impossible to have a process whose sole eect is the transfer of heat from a heat
reservoir at a lower temperature to one at a higher temperature. Do you think
the above statement can be made even stronger in the sense that the two heat
reservoirs are now replaced by two objects? Either way, please provide a sound
argument to support your claim.
(b) Ditto for the Kelvin-Planck statement.
3. Two objects of respective temperature 1 and 2 (2 1 ) are brought into contact
for a brief time and then taken apart. After a long while when both objects have each
settled down to an equilibrium state, we find that their temperatures become 10 and
20 , respectively. Do you think it is possible for 10 20 to happen? Either way, please
provide a sound argument to support your claim.
