Rationale: Students will identify the main idea and supporting ideas.
Objectives:
Lesson Plan:
Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation):
To begin the lesson I will pull out the anchor chart that we made over main idea.
Process:
Information Giving
The students and I will review over the main idea anchor chart that we made a couple weeks ago and
we will also discuss how supporting details make a main idea as well.
Guided Practice/Modeling
We will then work together on identifying the main idea and supporting details about a short
passage. The students will read aloud a short passage on Benjamin Franklin. I will then explain how
in this envelope there are sentences with supporting details and a main event. The students will
decide together which is which and will put them in the correct column on the white board.
Check for Understanding
I will check for understanding by the students answers as we work together to identify the main
idea and supporting details on Benjamin Franklin.
Independent Practice
The students will each receive their own short passage that they will need to write the main idea
and two supporting ideas for the main idea.
Closure/Culminating Activity
As the students each finish their independent work I will check over each of their answers and
discuss with them one-on-one with each of them, before they head back to class.
Enrichment/Extension: If the students finish before time is up with their independent work
they can choose a book of their choice and write the main idea about it.
Assessment/Evaluation (Students):
-
Are the students able to identify and summarize the main idea?
Are the students able to list the supporting details?
Assessment/Evaluation (Self):
-
Were the students able to learn and understand at the pace that I went?
