The PowerShot Injection System is a patented sealed closed-loop


actuator that combines electrical and hydraulic technology in an energy
efficient assembly which requires no external power unit. This unit is
ideal for demanding injection control applications that require high
speed and/or high forces on medium and large tonnage plastics
machinery. This technology has been proven in Moog laboratories and
at major plastics customers around the world. The assembly is scalable
to a wide variety of machine configurations and will provide easy plugand-play installation. Only Moog has the patented PowerShot
Injection System that offers the benefits of both hydraulic and electric
technologies in a compact customizable assembly.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS


Improved Closed-Loop Injection Control
The PowerShot Injection System uses a Moog Servo Controller
(MSC), combined with a Moog Servovalve to offer superior
closed-loop velocity, pressure, and position control due to the
high accuracy of analog in- and outputs, fast digital and sensor
interface, and high valve dynamics. The software is easily
configured, giving the customer superior shot-to-shot
repeatability. The system is accumulator driven, and therefore,
capable of high injection speeds.
Improved Closed-Loop Backpressure Control
A Moog RKP Radial Piston Pump is combined with a ServoProportional Control Valve to ensure precise closed-loop control
of backpressure, while recharging the accumulators for the next
cycle. This system is capable of back pressure control down to
very low pressures.
Reduced Energy Consumption
To maximize energy efficiency, the main servomotor and RKP
pump are only turned on during the plasticizing (recovery)
portion of the cycle.
Flexible Design
The PowerShot Injection System is scalable to a wide range of
machine sizes, and can be customized to meet a wide variety
of special velocity, torque, and pressure requirements.

Improved Contamination Control


As this is a sealed system that is assembled at Moogs factory,
there is little chance of contamination entering the system,
which results in improved performance and longevity of the
hydraulic components in the system. Both the RKP pump and
the servovalve use direct drive pilot stage valves. These valves
are more tolerant to contamination due to high spool driving
forces, offering greater chip shearing forces.
Use of Synthetic Oil for Environmental Benefits
The PowerShot Injection System uses a synthetic ISO-46 grade
oil which is biodegradable and virtually non-toxic. This oil is
designed for use in high performance hydraulic systems
operating under moderate to severe conditions. It maintains a
constant viscosity over a wider temperature range, allowing for
quicker start-ups. The smallest systems require as little as 20 liters
of oil.
Easy Installation
The PowerShot injection system offers quick and easy
installation, as there are few connection points to the machine.

OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION
Injection Velocity/Pressure Control
The oil is discharged from a piston accumulator through a Moog
active cartridge valve, which is used to isolate the accumulator
from the system. A Moog Servovalve is used for closed-loop
control of injection velocity, pressure, and position. The
injection cylinder rod is always attached to the accumulator,
which allows for very precise injection control. During this time,
the main servomotor and RKP Pump is turned off to conserve
energy.
Decompression (Suckback) Control
As the injection cylinder rod side is always attached to the
accumulator, the servovalve only needs to allow oil out of the
injection cylinder until the desired plasticizing screw position
setpoint is reached.
Recovery (Plasticizing) Control
During this part of the process, the servovalve is de-energized.
The main servomotor and RKP Pump are turned on to control
the outgoing oil from the injection cylinder. The RKP Pump is
controlled by a Servo-Proportional Valve to maintain closedloop backpressure control.

Auxiliary Pump/Motor Assembly


The leakage oil from the pump case drain, and valves are
collected in the oil recovery vessel. When the oil reaches a
certain level a small auxiliary pump/motor assembly pumps the
oil back to the piston accumulator for the next cycle. When the
oil level reaches a lower level setpoint in the oil recovery vessel,
the auxiliary pump switches to a cooling, filtering loop mode
of operation.
Safety Features
During a shut-down of the unit or in an emergency stop
condition, the active cartridge closes to isolate the accumulator
from the injection cylinder. The main motor and RKP Pump are
turned off and the servovalve de-energizes. Solenoid valves in
the system de-energize, allowing the piston accumulator to
discharge to the oil recovery vessel, along with any other
pressurized oil in the system.
Customizable
This brochure shows five typical injection configurations
designed to fit a wide range of machines. Moog engineers will
work with customers to customize the Powershot System to
meet their unique performance specifications. The
configuration of the Injection System can also be customized to
accommodate the customers needs.

CONTROL DESCRIPTION

Injection System

MSC MOOG SERVO CONTROLLER AND MOOG AXIS CONTROL SOFTWARE (MACS)
The MSC Moog Servo Controller is a flexible, freely
programmable multi-axis controller with integrated PLC
functionality. In the PowerShot Injection System, the MSC
performs closed-loop control of the injection ram position,
injection speed, holding pressure, screw speed, decompression
(suckback), and backpressure. The individual parts of the
injection cycle can be customized, allowing the customer to stay
in control of the process and come up with unique solutions.
In the recommended configuration, the MSC communicates
with the existing machine controller using digital I/O signals
and/or serial communication. A more traditional control
structure with the existing machine controller, supplying analog
command signals for the injection process to the MSC, can also
be accommodated if required by the customer.
The machine controller uses digital I/O to signal the MSC to
perform the individual task of the injection cycle. Digital outputs
on the machine controller connect to digital inputs on the MSC,
to signal injection start, plasticizing start, etc. Digital outputs on
the MSC connect to digital inputs on the machine controller to
signal a task is completed.

interface shown here is one example
that can be modified to meet a wide
variety of control requirements.

As a starting point, the injection process is configured as follows:


Speed control is a 10 step speed vs. position profile.
Holding pressure control is a 10 step pressure vs. time profile.
V/P switch between speed and pressure control is selectable
between ram position, injection pressure, cavity pressure,
and time.
Plasticizing control is configured as a 5 step backpressure vs.
position, and a 5 step screw RPM vs. position profiles.
Decompression (suckback) is available before and after
plasticizing as two sets of speed vs. stroke parameter sets.
The customer can choose to parameterize the MSC by visualizing
all these process parameters on the existing machine controller.
The parameters and current cycle data can be communicated
between the existing machine controller and the MSC using the
serial communication line. This allows for the display of current
injection speed and pressure and parameters such as actual
values at the V/P switch point. This allows for a tight integration
between the existing machine controller and the PowerShot
Injection System, as no additional display/HMI is needed.
