GROUP - I
Marks : 10 x 3 = 30

1. Define elastic range and plastic range of a material. What is the significance of these
ranges in structural design?
2. For a prismatic bar subjected to an axial load, derive an expression for strain energy in
terms of stress.
3. A square bar of size 20 x 20 mm is subjected to direct tensile force. Find the largest
value of tensile force the bar can sustain, if its shear strength is 100 MPa. Also, calculate
the direct stress on a plane inclined at 60 0 with the bar axis under the maximum load.
4. Show that a square section is more efficient for a beam than a circular section of the
same cross-sectional area.
5. A cantilever rod of length 2 m fails when a load of 2kN is applied at the free end. If the
section of the rod is 40 mm x 60 mm, find the stress at the failure.
6. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram for a beam subjected to a moment
at an intermediate section at point C as shown in Fig.1.

7. What is stiffness of a shaft? Why a hollow shaft is preferred over a solid shaft?
8. A simple supported beam is subjected to a point load at its mid point. Write the
governing differential equation and boundary conditions.
9. From the Mohrs circles shown in Fig. 2, construct the nature, without magnitude, of the
stresses on a differential element in X and Y plane.

Marks : 4 x 12.5 = 50

11. a) The assembly shown in Fig 3 consists of two 10 mm diameter brass rods AB and
CD, a 15 mm diameter stainless steel rod EF, and a rigid bar G. If P = 5 kN,
determine the horizontal displacement of end F of rod EF. The youngs modulus of
brass and stainless steel are 101 GPa and 193 GPa respectively.

b) A punch having a diameter 20 mm is used to punch holes in an 8 mm thick plate. If a
force 110 kN is required to create the hole, what is the average shear stress in the
plate and the average compressive stress in the punch?
(3)
12. Express the shear and moment functions in terms of x, and then draw the shear and
bending moment diagrams for the simply supported beam shown in Fig 4.

13. Derive the expressions for principal stresses and planes for a body subjected to a
bi-axial stress condition.
14. a) A hollow shaft, having an internal diameter 40 % of its external diameter, transmits
560 kW power at 100 rpm. Determine the external diameter of the shaft if the shear
stress is not to exceed 60 N/mm2 and the twist in a length of 2.5 m should not exceed
1.3 0. Assume maximum torque is 1.25 times of mean torque and modulus of rigidity
is 9 x 10 4 N / mm2.

250 mm deep carries a point load W at the centre. The permissible bending stress is
7 N/mm2. Calculate the safe load W.
(5)
15. a) Find an expression for crippling load for a long column when one end of the column
is fixed and other end is hinged.
(9.5)
b) Define slenderness ratio. State the limitations of Eulers formula.

16. Determine the equations of the elastic curve for the beam shown in Fig 5 using the X1
and X2 coordinates. Specify the slope at point A and the maximum displacement of the
beam. EI is constant.
