OF JARROD DYSON, OF LEONYS MARTIN, LHP JAMES PAXTON, RHP EVAN SCRIBNER,
INF JEAN SEGURA, LHP DREW SMYLY, INF DANNY VALENCIA & RHP NICK VINCENT
The Mariners have no remaining arbitration eligible players.
SEATTLE, Wash. Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto
announced today that the club has agreed to terms on 2017 contracts with eight arbitration eligible players on the clubs
Major League, 40-man roster: outfielders Jarrod Dyson & Leonys Martin; infielders Jean Segura & Danny Valencia; lefthanded pitchers James Paxton & Drew Smyly and right-handed pitchers Evan Scribner & Nick Vincent. Per club policy,
terms of the contract were not disclosed.
By agreeing to terms with the eight players, the Mariners have no remaining arbitration-eligible players.
Dyson, 32, was acquired from Kansas City in exchange for right-handed pitcher Nathan Karns on Jan. 6. Last season, he
hit .278 (83x299) with 46 runs, 14 doubles, 8 triples, 1 home run, 25 RBI and 30 stolen bases in 107 games with the Royals.
The 5-foot-10, 160-pound outfielder tallied at least 30 stolen bases for the 4th time in the last 5 seasons (2012-16), one of
five players to accomplish this feat. Dyson hit safely in a career-best 10 consecutive games last season, batting .372 (16x43)
with 10 runs, 1 double, 1 triple, 3 RBI and 5 stolen bases from Sept. 2-17. Since 2012, Dyson has recorded 156 stolen
bases, T6th-most in the Majors (also: Ben Revere) during that time span. In parts of the 7 Major League seasons with the
Royals (2010-16), he is a career .260 (355x1365) hitter with 48 doubles, 29 triples, 7 home runs, 101 RBI and 176 stolen
bases in 550 career games.
Martin, 28 (turns 29 on March 6), hit .247 (128x518) with 72 runs, 17 doubles, 3 triples, 15 home runs, 47 RBI and 24 stolen
bases in 143 games with the Mariners last season. He posted single-season career-highs in runs (72), home runs (15),
walks (44) and total bases (196). Martin recorded 14 stolen bases, marking his 3rd season with at least 20 steals in the last
4 years. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound outfielder was one of 4 center fielders in the Major Leagues last season to hit 15 or more
home runs and record 20 or more stolen bases, joining Ian Desmond, Odubel Herrera and Mike Trout. His 11 outfield assists
ranked 2nd among American League center fielders, trailing only Bostons Jackie Bradley Jr. (13). Martin was acquired from
Texas along with right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass in exchange for right-handed pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen, outfielder James
Jones and a Player to Be Named Later (Patrick Kivlehan) on Nov. 16, 2015. In parts of 6 Major League seasons with the
Rangers (2011-15) and Mariners (2016-c), the native of Villa Clara, Cuba, is a career .252 (467x1850) hitter with 240 runs,
69 doubles, 18 triples, 35 home runs and 167 RBI in 572 career games.
Paxton, 28, went 6-7 with a 3.79 ERA (51 ER, 121.0 IP) with 117 strikeouts and 24 walks in 20 starts with Seattle last
season. The native of Ladner, British Columbia, Canada, compiled a record of 3-2 with a 3.23 ERA (20 ER, 55.2 IP) with
56 strikeouts and 7 walks in his final 9 starts of 2016. He averaged 8.70 strikeouts-per-9.0-innings (117 K, 121.0 IP), the
highest rate of his career while also averaging a career-best 4.74 strikeouts-per-walk (117 K, 24 BB). The 6-foot-4, 220pound left-hander began the season with AAA Tacoma before being recalled to Seattle on June 1. In 11 starts with Tacoma
last season, Paxton went 4-3 with a 3.73 ERA (21 ER, 50.2 IP) with 53 strikeouts and 15 walks. He was originally selected
by the Mariners in the 4th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Over parts of 4 Major League seasons with Seattle,
Paxton has a career record of 18-15 with a 3.43 ERA (109 ER, 286.0 IP) with 253 strikeouts and 89 walks in 50 career starts.
Scribner, 31 (turns 32 on July 19), did not allow a run in 12 relief appearances with Seattle last season. He recorded 15
strikeouts and 2 walks while allowing 5 hits over 14.0 innings pitched. The 6-3, 190-pound right-hander was placed on the 15day disabled list on April 3 (retroactive to March 25) with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle and was transferred to the
60-day DL on May 29. Scribner made 8 rehab appearances (2 starts) with the AZL Mariners, advanced-A Bakersfield, AA
Jackson and AAA Tacoma, posting a record of 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA (6 ER, 8.1 IP) with 14 strikeouts and 3 walks. He was
recalled from AAA Tacoma and activated from the 60-day DL on Sept. 1. The following day (9/2), he made his 2016 debut with
1.0 scoreless inning vs. Los Angeles-AL, marking his first Major League appearance since Aug. 31, 2015 with Oakland vs. the
Angels. Scribner was acquired by Seattle from Oakland in exchange for right-handed pitcher Trey Cochran-Gill on Dec. 8,
2015. In parts of 6 Major League seasons with San Diego (2011), Oakland (2012-15) and Seattle (2016), he has compiled a
career record of 5-2 with 1 save and a 3.84 ERA (69 ER, 161.2 IP) with 149 strikeouts and 29 walks.
Segura, 26 (turns 27 March 17), hit .319 with 203 hits, 102 runs, 41 doubles, 7 triples, 20 home runs, 64 RBI and 33 steals
in 153 games with Arizona last season. His on-base percentage of .368 and slugging percentage of .499 gave him an OPS
of .867. Segura batted lead off in 147 games, hitting all of his home runs from that spot, including 8 homers to lead off a
game. Among NL leadoff hitters, ranked first in hits (198), tied for first in triples (7), second in total bases (310), tied for
second in homers (20), third in RBI (63) and fifth in average (.319). He posted a 6.9 WAR, second highest in NL to Kris
Bryant (8.3) and best by a NL second baseman since Chase Utley in 2009 (7.4) [source: STATS LLC] . Segura, who played 142
games at second base and 23 at shortstop last season, finished 13th in the NL MVP voting.
His combination of 20+ home runs, 30+ steals, 40+ doubles, 100+ runs, 200+ hits and a .300+ average has only been done
five times since the start of the 2000 season. Segura joined Alfonso Soriano (2002 w/NYY), Hanley Ramirez (2007 w/FLA),
Jacoby Ellsbury (2011 w/BOS) and Jose Altuve (2016 w/HOU).
