Ptolemy- Ptolemy was the first to write a book on astronomy. He recorded his belief that the Earth was the
center of the universe and everything in the sky traveled around it.

Copernicus- Copernicus believed the Earth and other planets traveled around the sun. He was worried
people would be mad at him, so he waited until just before he died to publish his theory.

Galileo- Galileo Galilei believed Copernicus's theory and wanted to prove it. He used a telescope to study
the night sky and discovered the rings of Saturn, Jupiter's moons, and lots of stars. He founded modern
astronomy.

Hans Lippershey- Hans Lippershey was an eyeglass maker. He built the first telescope in 1608.

Sir Issac Newton- Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity. He believed gravity was what kept the moon and
planets traveling on their paths instead of spinning off into outer space.

Alan Shepard- Alan Shepard was the first American in space.

John Glenn- John Glenn was the first American to orbit Earth.

Edward White- Edward White was the first American to walk in space.

Neil Armstrong- Neil Armstrong was the first person to step onto the surface of the moon. He was a part of
the Apollo 11 mission. He said, “That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin- Buzz Aldrin was the second person to step onto the moon. He was part of the Apollo
11 mission.

Mike Collins- Mike Collins was the command module pilot for the Apollo 11 mission.

Valentina Tareshkova- Valentina Tareshkova was the first woman to go into space.

Sally Ride- Sally Ride was the first American woman to go into space.
