The Research Participation Requirement: The Research Participation
Requirement is a traditional part of Psychology classes and is aimed at helping you better
understand the scientific process that is the basis of the material you are learning in your
Psychology class. The Requirement can be met by serving as a participant in research
conducted by Psychology faculty or by upper division Psychology majors under faculty
supervision. By serving as a research participant, you will also be providing a valuable
service to society, because the research you participate in will help advance the scientific
study of the mind, brain, and behavior. The Research Participation Requirement is
administered by the Psychology Department and not by the instructor of the course you
are now taking. Research participation is administered via an online system. You will be
emailed a login name and password that is specific to you. Additional information about
research participation and instructions for using the online research participation system
are available on Blackboard.
Research Participant Rights and Responsibilities: Prior to participating in a
study, you will be asked to read and sign a consent form that will describe the study and
outline your rights as a participant. Provisions are taken to protect your privacy and to
maintain the confidentiality of any information that you provide. The experimenter also
has an obligation to tell you about the purpose of the research after you have served so
that the experiment can serve as a learning experience for you. It is also your right to
elect not to participate in studies. Most students find participation in research fun and
educational, but participation is completely voluntary. If you decide not to participate in
studies, please visit the Psychology Department Office (South Science 229) for
instructions on an alternative means for completing the Research Participation
Requirement. When you sign-up to participate in a study, you have made a commitment
to arrive at the study location at the designated day and time. If you fail to appear for a
study on time twice, then you will no longer be allowed to participate in experiments and
will have to complete the Subject Pool Requirement with an alternative assignment.

Class policy on plagiarism

Duplication of any material from another written work that is not in quotations is
plagiarism. Plagiarism is cheating, and therefore, any instance will be considered grounds for an F in
this class. Cheating during the exam will be grounds for an automatic F in the class. Additionally, I
am required to put the following statement in my syllabus By enrolling in this class the student
agrees to uphold the standards of academic integrity described in the catalog at
http://www.csueastbay.edu/ecat/current/i-120grading.html#section12.

Psychology and Music additional objectives: In PSYC 1002, we will investigate a wide
range of psychological principles that underlie the perception, appreciation, and
production of music. We will study the physiological and psychological mechanisms that
allow us to perceive sound and other information in the environment; learning and
memory processes that are necessary for developing and retaining musical skills; and
other basic topics in psychology that will enhance your appreciation of music (e.g.,
principles of social psychology inform how audiences can influence musical
performance).
