Le 1 The Sentence
Read the following group of words:
1. air fresh good us for is

The above groups of words do not make sense. They are not sentences. Now look at the
same group of words given below:
1. Fresh air is good for us.
2. I like to read story books.
3. India is my motherland.
These groups of words makes sense. Hence, they can be called Sentences.

Define- Sentence - A group of words that makes complete sense is called a sentence.
For example:
1. The book is on the table.
2. Why were you absent yesterday?
3. What a pleasant day it is!

Things to remember :
1. The words in a sentence must be placed in their proper order to make
complete sense.
2. A sentence always begins with a Capital Letter.
3. A sentence must have a verb in it.
4. A sentence must end with a Full stop or a Question Mark or an Exclamation
Mark.

Kinds of sentences [only for explanation]


There are 4 kinds of sentences:
1. Assertive Sentence : A sentence that says or states something is called a
statement or an Assertive Sentence.
Eg.
1. He will come here tomorrow.
2. Radha is fond of oranges.
3. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Assertive sentence ends with a fullstop (.)
2. Interrogative sentence : A sentence that asks a question is called an
Interrogative Sentence.
Eg.
1. Where do you live?
2. Do you have a pen?
3. What is the name of your school?
Interrogative sentence ends with a question mark (?)
3. Imperative Sentence : A sentence that expresses a request, command,
order or an advice is called an Imperative sentence.
Eg :
4. Please give me some food .(request)
5. Stand up at once. (order)
6. Take rest for a day. (advice)
Imperative sentence ends with a fullstop.

4. Exclamatory Sentence: A sentence that expresses a sudden or strong


feeling is called an Exclamatory Sentence.
Eg:
1. What a beautiful girl she is!
2. May she live in peace!
3. Well done!
Exclamatory Sentence ends with a mark of exclamation (!)

Le 2 Subject and predicate


We know that a sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense.
Example: Mary is reading a book.
A sentence can be divided into two parts: a) The Subject and b) The predicate
Mary
is reading a book.
Subject
predicate
Mary is the subject because the sentence is about to Mary. The word is reading a
book is the predicate because this part tell us something about the subject Mary.

The part of a sentence which tells us what the sentence is about the subject.
The part of a sentence which tells us something about the subject is the predicate.
The subject can be a word or a group of words.

Eg.1.Suman came first in class

The order of the subject and predicate.


Usually, the subject comes before the predicate but often for emphasis, the predicate
can come before the subject.
Examples:

Predicate
Subject: A lion

The predicate always begins with a verb.
Again, in Imperative sentences, the subject is not mentioned.
Examples: 1. Go to sleep.
2. Get up from bed.
These sentences actually mean
1. You go to sleep.
2. You getup from bed.
You is the subject. It is not stated but implied.

Things to remember:
1. The subject can be a word or a group of words.
2. The subject can be in the beginning, middle or at the end of the sentence.
3. The predicate always begins with a verb.
4. In commands, the subject is you which is not mentioned but implied.

Parts of speech
Words are divided into different parts of speech according to the work they do in a
sentence. The 8 parts of speech are as follows:
1. Noun

2. Pronoun
6.Preposition
3. Adjective
7.Conjuntion
4. Verb
8. Interjection
1. Noun : A noun is a word that is the name of a person ,place , animal, thing or
quality. Eg. Jay is going to market with his dog to buy a ball. (jay person,
market place, dog animal)
2. Pronoun : A pronoun is a word used instead of a Noun.
Eg. Arvind is sleeping as he is ill.(he pronoun)
3. Adjective : An adjective is a word used to qualify or describe a Noun or
Pronoun.
Eg. Jimmy is a smart boy. (smart adjective)
4. Verb : A verb is a word used to express an action.
Eg. The oldman walked slowly. (walked verb)
5. Adverb : An adverb is a word that modifies or describes a verb, adjective or
another adverb.
Eg. The sun shines brightly. (brightly adverb)
6. Preposition: A preposition is a word used along with a noun or a pronoun to
show its relation to other words in the sentence.
Eg. The frog jumped into the well. (into preposition)

7. Conjunction : A conjunction is a word used to join together words or


sentences.
Eg. I love apples and mangoes. (and conjunction)
8. Interjection : An interjection is a word which expresses some sudden
feeling.
Eg. Oh ! What a huge animal. (oh interjection)

Le 3 The noun- kinds of nouns.


A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing, quality and feelings.
Eg.1. Rohan is an honest man.
2. Kindness is rewarded.
3. Delhi is a beautiful city.
In above sentences, the words Rohan, man, kindness, Delhi and city are nouns.
Kinds of nouns:
There are 5 kinds of nouns:
1) Common noun: A common noun is the name given in common to every
person, place, animal or thing of the same kind or class.
Examples:
1. The boy lives in a city.
2. These apples are sweet.
3. The dogs are barking.
In the above sentences boy, city, apples and dogs are common nouns because
they give common names to a person, a place, an animal and a thing.
2) Proper Noun: A proper noun is the special name of a particular person, place,
animal or thing. It always begin with a capital letter.
Examples:
1. Kerala is a beautiful tourist spot.
2. Tom is my friend.
In the above sentences Kerala and Tom are proper nouns because they are names of
a particular person and place.
3) Collective noun: A collective noun is the name given to a collection of
persons, animals or things taken as whole.

Examples:
1. A pack of wolves lived in the jungle.

2. The fisherman caught a shoal of fish.


3. He gave me a bouquet of flowers on my birthday.
In the above sentences Pack means a number of wolves, Shoal means a collection of
Fish, Bouquet means a collection of flowers. Hence pack, shoal, bouquet are
Collective
nouns. They are names given to a collection or group.
4) Material Noun: A material noun is the name of matter or substance from
which things are made.
Examples:
1. The table is made of wood.
2. Ornaments are made of gold.
wood and gold are material nouns as they are names of substances.
5) Abstract noun: An Abstract noun is the name of something which we can
neither see or touch but which we can only think of.

OR
An Abstract noun is the name of some state, quality, idea or feeling that we can only
think of or feel but can never touch or see.
Examples:.
1. He is known for his kindness.
2. Generosity is always rewarded.
3. Childhood is a rosy period of life.
4. Laughter is the best medicine.
The nouns kindness, Generosity, Childhood, Laughter are the names of a quality, state,
idea or action. These nouns are called Abstract nouns.

Lesson -4 The Verb Kinds of verbs

A verb is a word which says something about the subject in a sentence.


It is the most important part of a sentence as there can be no sentence without a
verb.

Examples:
1. The girls dance.
2. The child plays.
3. The sun shines.
In the above sentence the words dance, plays, and shines are verbs and they tell us
what the subject of the sentence (girls, child, and sun) does.

Kinds of Verbs : Verbs can be classified into 2 types:


1. Transitive Verb:
Read these groups of words
1. Veena loves________? (what)

2. Mona likes________? (what)


3. Jim struck________? (whom)
These are not sentences. They are incomplete and require objects to complete their
meanings or sense.
Now, read the same groups of words along with their objects.
1. Veena loves Chinese food.

Now, these sentences make complete sense.
Words which are added to the verbs to complete their meaning are called objects.

Define : A verb that requires an object to complete its sense is called a Transitive
verb.
Examples:
The tailor made shirts.( The tailor =subject, made=Verb(transitive), shirt=object
2. Intransitive verb:
Read these sentences
1. Rajan laughed.
2. Dogs bark.
3. Birds fly.
These sentences do not require any object to complete their meanings (or sense). They
make complete sense by themselves.

Define : A verb that does not require an object but makes good sense by itself is called
an Intransitive verb.
Eg. The sun shines.

The Gateway of India is one of Mumbais most famous landmarks. It stands at the waters
edge at Apollo Bunder, a stones throw from the Taj Mahal Hotel. The 26 meter high
archway was built to commemorate the visit to India of the royal couple, George V and
Queen Mary, in 1911. Though the foundation stone was laid in 1911, the monument took

The elephant is very different from his other wild friends. The home of the elephant is
Asia and Africa. Elephants live together in herds and like to roam about in forests where
it is cool. During the day, they rest, eat and bathe is pools and rivers. Elephants are good
