AS Media Studies G321 Foundation Portfolio Title Sequence to a film opening

COURSEWORK EVALUATION

You must answer all seven questions. This is worth 20% of your marks.

Your answers must be presented using a range of digital technology in order to give you a chance of achieving the
highest possible marks. You want to aim to use 4 different types of ICT software or apps to present your
answers and be creative in how you use ICT.

You MUST INCLUDLE VISUAL EXAMPLES using screen grabs and embedded clips from real media
examples and your own work. You are evaluating a piece of visual work and will loose marks if you dont use visual
aids to support what you say.

Below you have been given a suggestion of which ICT to use to present each answer. If you would like to use a
different method please speak to your teacher with your ideas first.

Your answers must be properly prepared and, if you are talking to camera or interviewing someone, it must be
scripted.

You are allowed to work in pairs for 3 of the tasks. Your teacher must know which 3 questions you will answer as a
group.

Question
Q1.
In what
ways does your
media
product
use, develop or
challenge forms
and conventions
of real media
products?

What do you need to do in order to answer this

question
You must explain the conventions of title
sequences, what their purpose is, the order we
expect to see them in and why they follow a
strict order
You must compare your own title credits with a
similar real media text take screenshots of
your titles and titles from an influential real
sequence and compare them

Suggested tasks & suggested use of

technology
Use Emaze to present your answer.
Use a different slide for each bullet point in
the column to the left of this.
You must use headings, subheadings, bullet
points and screenshots as a minimum
presentation requirement.
Extension task:

Blog tasks 4-11/1417 and 25 can all

help you answer
this question

Q2. How does

your
media
product
represent
particular social
groups?

You must explain the conventions of film

openings for the genre you are working in
o show some of these conventions from
real title sequences you were influenced
by.
o give examples from at least 2 real media
texts to show you understand what the
macro and micro conventions are
You must COMPARE your own work with these
real media examples (the ones you used in the
point above) to say how you have either
followed or challenged the conventions of title
sequences in your genre.
o Use screenshots side by side to show
this
You must define representation
Briefly explain which social groups we expect
to see in the title sequences for the genre you
have worked in
Say how these social groups are usually
represented in Films of your genre
give some examples from real media texts you
looked at
use screenshots and images to show this

You could include the following in your emaze:

You could use camtasia to record a
directors cut voice commentary to go over
your film discussing how you have used
forms and conventions
You could create a montage of stills from
real films and stills from your own film to
show how you followed a conventional order
for the titles and have used specific
conventions (or challenged them) from your
genre with some explanation for each
example.

Create a prezi that organizes your answer into

one circle or bubble for each of the bullet points
listed in the previous column.
You must include screen grabs and/or
embedded video clips from real media
You must include screen grabs and/or
embedded video clips of your own title
sequence to support your ideas

Blog tasks 14, 15

Extension tasks:

following:
of the main character and discuss different

Describe the social group(s) that you have
aspects of their representation
represented in your film opening

Q3. What kind of

media institution
might distribute
your
media
product
and
why?
Blog task 32 can
help you answer
this question. You
will also need to
ask
for
the
handout to help
you answer this
too.

Explain (analyse) how you have represented

these characters
o is it positive or negative?
o Do you support or challenge the common
stereotypes usually seen in teen dramas
and wider media?
Give the name of the distribution companies you
have used/created in the titles of your own teen
movie you could screenshot the ident you
created

There are now 2 ways of answering this question

depending on whether the distribution company you
credited is a real media company or if you created it
yourself:
1. If you used a distribution company that
already exists:
Indicate why you chose this distribution company
by discussing the following
o use examples from real media texts that
you studied which were also distributed by
this company
which other films they have they distributed and
how successful they were with your target
audience?
Explain why they would be best suited to
distributing your film
o talk about the types of release you would
expect wide or restricted, local, national or
global with this distributor
o would you have a theatrical release, digital
or both with this distributor?
o how could they help you reach your target

You could interview some members of the

target audience using a flip camera to get
vlog feedback on the representations you
have constructed, then analyse the feedback

Create a Padlet to answer this question

Divide up your answer so that there is a
separate section for each bullet point indicated
in the left hand column here.
You must include an image or embedded video
on each section you use so there is no part of
the answer with just text

audience based on the above?

2. if you have made your own distribution
company for your film:

Discuss what real distributor your company is

similar to and why give examples from other
films similar to yours and look at who has
distributed them
Discuss which real films similar to yours you
might also distribute if you were a real company
to show your understanding
Discuss how your distribution company will
enable you to have a restricted local release with
the premier and theatrical release at an art
house cinema Screen on the Green
Discuss the digital distribution of your title
sequence through Vimeo and how you can reach
your target audience as a result of this type of
distribution compare with similar films
Discuss the DVD release (of the student films)
compare with similar films
For each of the points above, make it clear that
you have chosen these distribution methods
because you are a small, independent distributor
who specializes in distributing independently
made films.
Additional content:
You could include the Ident you made and
explain how it represents your company.
You could also explain what marketing
campaign your distributor would use to
promote your film WIX website, social
networking etccomparing your own to real

media examples. You may have examples you

have made on your blog already.
Q4. Who would
be the audience
for your media
product?

Blog tasks 12, 13,

27 and 28 can all
help you answer
this question.

Q5. How did you

attract/address
your audience?
Blog tasks 12, 13,
27, 28, 50, 52 and
53 can all help you
answer
this
question.

Define the term audience and target audience

and state why an audience is necessary for the
success of a media text.
Describe the wider audience for films of the
genre you are working in, in general make
reference to the BFI statistics to indicate who
watches them now. Refer to your target
audience research (blog tasks 11 and 12) and
your findings from the YouGov profiles that you
looked at in class/homework.
Describe the specific audience for your own
film based on its USP - how did you find them
and how have you identified them as your
target audience (blog tasks 12, 26 & 27)?
You might also want to give an example of
target audiences for similar real media texts to
yours.

Create a Thinglink with an image of your ideal

target audience member (you can use the target
audience profile image you used for your pitch for
this).
Create a separate point for each of the bullet
points in the left hand column here.
You must include images
If you made an annotated Camtasia
audience research video during the project
also include this in the Thinglink with some
commentary or explanation
Alternative suggestions or extension tasks:
You could also create a facebook profile for
a specific member of your target audience
with clear indication of their likes, dislikes,
lifestyle, occupation, the media they
consume and other brands they like to show
who your ideal target audience member is

You could Film an interview with an actor
from your film who is talking about their
hectic promotional schedule and all the PR
they have been doing for their film. But, they
must refer the bullet list points in the
previous column in their interview.
Or, you could do a bit of all of the above!
Create a Camtasia

for each part of the title sequence that we
see on screen, explain the different

cameras, premier pro etc)

of your sequence)

the production stages to construct your film

o give 2 or 3 specific examples for each
technology you discuss.
o Explain how you used it not just what
you used
