BACKGROUND DISCUSSION
During planned outages a number of six-pad Double Tilt Pad (DTP) bearings have been found with damage on the
leading edge of the upper pads. Analysis has determined this damage is due to the oil wedge not forming sufficiently,
resulting in the pad fluttering. The pad fluttering leads to work hardening of the Babbitt, which subsequently chips off
over time.
There have been no operational indications, such as temperature, vibration, etc, which indicates this damage. An
inspection is required to identify if the pad has experienced damage due to fluttering (see Figures 1 & 2). A modified
geometry for the leading edge of the upper pads is now available to improve formation of the oil wedge.

RECOMMENDATIONS
An inspection on all six-pad DTP bearings is recommended at the next scheduled outage or when bearing is exposed. If
fluttering damage is noted a qualified GE service shop can repair the damaged Babbitt and modify the upper pads to an
improved leading edge geometry.
Contact your local GE Service Manager or Contract Performance Manager for assistance or for additional information.
