The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

Introduction

I have to explain that this is not so much a review, but is actually more of a
critique. I do not claim to be a scholar; however I do claim to have a solid
doctrinal view that is based solely on what the Bible has taught me. I align myself
with no particular denomination and I am writing this critique on Rick Warrens
theology that he promotes through this book rather than his writing style or the
books attraction. I have also used a pdf version of TPDL for this review, so if
pages quoted do not line up, then that is why.
This is the link to the PDF.
http://www.pdf-archive.com/2014/11/02/Rick-warren-the-purpose-driven-life/
I have put word for word references from TPDL in Blue Italics and kept my
dialogue in plain font. Wherever I have quoted scripture it has been printed in
Red Italics. If this critique seems to lack literary flow, it is because the purpose of
it is not to have you deeply engaged with this actual critique, but rather just to
highlight the inaccuracies of Warrens Claims.
I have made no effort to sugar coat my work. This is typical of my personal life
and how I conduct myself in teaching, my professional work and even with my
close personal family. I have done my best to leave my ideals and personal
opinions out of this as much as realistically possible and only added my feelings
where I thought it was necessary. I would like to think that this is evident through
the numerous bible verses I have referenced, and with every effort in my
response to TPDL, I have tried to not remove text from its context or the spirit of
its meaning as to avoid the hypocrisy of doing exactly what Warren has done
throughout TPDL.
It makes sense that a book that claims to be able to explain a strangers purpose
for living would cover a large number of topics and areas within the Christian
walk. Naturally there are a lot of doctrinal areas to cover. Because of this I would
encourage you to read all of the critiques here, even if there are some points that
you may not agree with. I say this because sometimes we tend to hear
something we are not sure of and then throw the rest out. I will admit it was this
reality that made reading through TPDL very difficult for me. It was like sitting in a
room hearing a heretical preacher. If it were not for the sake of uncovering his
heresies on behalf of my struggling brothers and sisters in Christ, I would have
walked out of the room after the first five pages.
It is evident that Rick Warren endorses Churchianity more than Christianity and
this can be seen throughout his book. You will often read things that Rick states
and it seems very familiar to church talk. It is important to realise however, that
Christianese speech and Church sayings do not automatically equate to biblical
truth. Please keep this in mind as we look through these quotes.

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

Introduction

It is probably beneficial for some to also mention the meaning of the following
words.
Biblical - biblical \bi-bli-kl
a) of, relating to, or being in accord with the Bible
Christianese - chrischinese \krischnz\
a) the contained terms and jargon used within many of the branches
and denominations of Christianity as a functional system of religious
terminology. It is characterized by the use in everyday conversation of certain
words, theological terms, puns and catchphrases, in ways that may be only
comprehensible within the context of a particular Christian sect or
denomination.

Churchianity - churchianity \chr-ch-a-n-t\

a) a pejorative term for practices of Christianity that are viewed as
placing more emphasis on the habits of church life or its
institutional traditions than on the teachings of Jesus. Hence the
replacement of "Christ" by "Church" in the word "Churchianity"
Ecumenical - ecumenical \e-ky-me-ni-kl, -ky-\
a) of, relating to, or representing the whole of a body of churches
b) promoting or tending toward worldwide Christian unity or cooperation
Eschatology - eschatology \es-k-t-l-j\
a) a branch of theology concerned with the final events in the history of
the world or of humankind.
b) a belief concerning death, the end of the world, or the ultimate destiny
of humankind; specifically : any of various Christian doctrines
concerning the Second Coming, the resurrection of the dead, or the
Last Judgment
I ask that as you read this critique, do your best to let go of any Christianese
buzz phrases that maybe contrary to the points I am making, and contrarily urge
you to critique what I have written with the use of scripture. I will go one step
further and request that you make your critique within the same framework that I
have written the critique of TPDL. That is without personal vendetta or opinion,
but through the scope of what Scripture contextually describes and explains.
I pray that through this critique of TPDL, eyes will be opened, people will be lead
into a deeper hunger for biblical Christianity and most importantly, That JESUS
(who is the way the TRUTH and the life) will be glorified, In JESUS name for
JESUS sake, Amen.

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

Its important to note that throughout the entire book, Rick Warren never
mentions the church's mandate of being a spotless bride. Ephesians 5:25-27 &
Revelation 19:7-8 He also never speaks of the importance of a sanctified life, nor
the most important mandate for each individual Christian - Repentance. When it
comes to purpose, surely one of the most important purposes of the church is to
follow GODs purposes. However, the underlying thread of his brand is
continuously pushed into the readers core. This brand does not place the
purpose on living out Sanctification or Repentance, but rather
living purpose driven. This reveals itself through so much vain enforcement
throughout the book that he actually implicates TPDL as the bible itself. For
example we see this where he instructs the readers to have a connect group
where attendees can chat about THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE, using a bible
verse Iron sharpens iron in a vile attempt to underhandedly imply that his book
is worthy to be central in a Christian group setting..
"Talk it through with a spiritual partner or small group. The best way to internalize
the principles in this book is to discuss them with others in a small-group setting.
The Bible says, "As iron sharpens iron, so people can improve each other." We
learn best in community. Our minds are sharpened and our convictions are
deepened through conversation. I strongly urge you to gather a small group of
friends and form a Purpose-Driven Life Reading Group to review these chapters
on a weekly basis. Discuss the implications and the applications of each chapter.
Ask "So what?" and "What now?" What does this mean for me, my family, and
our church? What am I going to do about it? Paul said, "Put into practice what
you learned" (Page 194)
Again, at the end of each chapter, Rick has placed what he calls a Point to
ponder Which he describes as a Nugget of truth On Page 5 Rick implies that
his teachings are of the same Authority as Saint Pauls writing in the Bible,
claiming
This is a nugget of truth that summarizes a principle of purpose-driven living that
you can reflect on throughout your day.Paul told Timothy, Reflect on what I am
saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.
Rick is saying that as Paul said to reflect on the Bibles teachings, so should the
reader meditate on TPDL.
2 Corinthians 11 warns against such heresy where Paul himself says that he
fears this very notion would be accepted
3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty,
so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he
that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye
receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye
have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

Throughout the book Rick obviously endorses his own gospel and then attempts
to do so using scripture. As most of what Rick is trying to push is not Scriptural,
Rick has to resort to a book that calls itself a bible, but is not one.- The Message.
Any Christian that knows their bible half as well as they should can soon see that
The message is not a bible at all, but a mish-mash of odd phrases that at times
resemble the original biblical text. Upon reading some of the quotes that Rick
claims are from the bible, I struggled to even figure out what the verse was in an
actual bible. As if purposefully, Rick would leave out the bible verse reference
when quoting The bible says.
For this reason I would have to copy word for word the Phrase he quoted as
being in the bible and google it just to find out where it was to be found in
scripture. An example of Rick doing this is found on page 11 when he tries to
inform the reader that TPDL is not a self-help book. Rather than using an actual
bible verse to back up his anti-self-help stance, he uses a verse from The
Message stating.
You need more than self-help advice. The Bible says, "Self-help is no help at all.
Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. This is not a
self-help book.
As an avid student of the bible, I struggled to guess what this was. So after
googling it I found out.
Rick Claims the bible says
"Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself,
your true self.
The bible actually says
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for
my sake shall find it. (Matthew 16:25)
Rick has used an interpretation of the bible that has claimed to be a translation.
Due to its incredibly equivocal and evasive representation, the Message creates
the opportunity for such heresies to be seen as being backed up by scripture
when in all reality the quoted Message text cant itself be backed up by scripture.
Its loose and inaccurate portrayal of Doctrine means that the most absurd and
heretical arguments could be supported.
Now remember, Ricks sole purpose in this book is to try and have you chase a
purpose. However, in order to do that he has to make some pretty stretched
claims. On Page 15 Rick says
But there is a God who made you for a reason, and your life has profound
meaning! We discover that meaning and purpose only when we make God the
reference point of our lives. The Message paraphrase of Romans 12:3 says,
"The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by
what he does for us."

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

This sounds in-line with what Rick is trying to push. But what does the actual
bible say?
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you,
not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly,
according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith
Nothing about The accurate way Nothing about Understanding ourselves So
in reality, Rick is using the Message (Under the false pretence that it is a bible) to
prove his own books theology when the notion is not even written in the actual
bible.
On Page 17, Rick makes the point that a lot of people are driven by guilt. This is
true, However his blatant manipulation of scripture to support his false doctrine,
is once again shown in its truest form. In the midst of this rant about guilt, Rick
writes
When Cain sinned, his guilt disconnected him from God's presence, and God
said, "You will be a restless wanderer on the earth That describes most people
today-wandering through life without a purpose-
Cain was not separated by his guilt. He was separated by his unrepentant state
after sinning - (Murdering his brother.) The ACTUAL bible reads
Genesis 4
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in
the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 9 And the Lord
said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my
brother's keeper? 10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy
brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
Note that, as in the story of Adams sin, GOD asks Cain where his brother is.
This is giving Cain an opportunity to Repent of what he is done. Instead of
repenting, Cain answers with a flippant, lying retort I know not, Am I my brothers
keeper?.It was this unrepentant sin that separated Cain from GOD, not Cains
guilty feelings.
On page Page 21 there is an absolute absurdity. Rick takes it upon himself to
write a test for all Christians. What is truly absurd about this test is that he has
the insolence to state that it is GODs test for salvation. He summarises this test
into two simple questions
First, "What did you do with my Son, Jesus Christ?" God won't ask about your
religious background or doctrinal views. The only thing that will matter is, did you
accept what Jesus did for you and did you learn to love and trust him?
Here we see that Rick takes an insidious shot at avid students of the bible saying
that GOD won't ask about your Doctrinal views. One huge problem Rick faces
here is that by this remark, he makes his book completely and utterly redundant.
Doctrine literally means teaching - which his book is doing and therefore this

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

Teaching of GODs two questions and furthermore his point of The only thing
that will matter is, did you accept what Jesus did for you and did you learn to love
and trust him? won't actually matter to GOD. The other big problem that Rick
has with this lie is that it is completely contrary to scripture.
Romans 2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus
Christ according to my gospel.
2 Thessalonians 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them
that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be
saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they
should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth,
but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them:
for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
John actually expounds further and actually says that if you dont stay in the true
doctrines of Christ, you do not have God He even goes on to say that as
Christians, we should not accept those that stray from the true doctrine.. 2 John
1:9 Everyone who does not remain true to the teaching of the Messiah, but
goes beyond it, does not have God. The person who remains true to the
teaching of the Messiah has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes
to you but does not present his teachings, do not receive him into your house
or even welcome him,
Page 45 sees Rick making up an interesting concept. What makes GOD smile
This is a big dollop of Ricks feel good gospel which the entire TPDL is smeared
with. Rick is making a claim on this page that GOD wants a relationship with us.
And not just that GOD wants it, but in fact, it is what GOD wants most. He writes
God made you to love you, and he longs for you to love him back. He says, "I
don't want your sacrifices-I want your love; I don't want your offerings-I want you
to know me." Can you sense God's passion for you in this verse?
However, it is important to realise here, that GOD does not need us. If he did,
that would mean he was not complete. Lets be clear here. Everything that GOD
did in the bible was for our benefit. In fact YAHWEH even explains his attitude to
himself being in want.
Psalm 50:12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the
fulness thereof.
Acts 17:24-25 also tells us
God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven
and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped
with men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he giveth to all life, and
breath, and all things;
What is most deceptive and incorrect about Ricks claim here however, is that he
is boldly saying GOD is not interested in sacrifice. His gross decontextualizing of

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

scripture is practised here once again. The verse he is manipulating here is

found in Haggai and its use to prove his point is flawed for three reasons.
1) GOD is talking to the Jews. What GOD said to the Jews is not necessarily
for Christians.
2) Contextually GOD is speaking against The Jews saying that they have
sinned, being murderous and thieves. When he says I desired Mercy, and
not sacrifice he was speaking to a people that lived wicked lives and leant
on carrying out ritual sacrifices in a pathetic attempt to appease GOD.
3) GOD is contextually speaking about wanting a knowledge of him more
than Burnt offerings.
Again this supports that GOD is a GOD of Doctrine. (Something Rick in Page 21
so obviously abhors)
His teaching on this is also a complete contradiction to other explicit scripture
that states GOD does require sacrifice.
Romans 12:1 I Beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye
present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your
reasonable service.
Jesus himself commanded sacrifice.
Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny
himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save
his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall
save it.
Even furthermore JESUS goes on to say that it is matter of salvation whosoever
will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
Funnily enough, Warren actually contradicts his use of not wanting sacrifice on
page 52 saying that sometimes we must sacrifice.
Page 48
You don't bring glory or pleasure to God by hiding your abilities or by trying to be
someone else. You only bring him enjoyment by being you. Anytime you reject
any part of yourself, you are rejecting God's wisdom and sovereignty in creating
you. God says, "You have no right to argue with your Creator. You are merely a
clay pot shaped by a potter: The clay doesn't ask, Why did you make me this
way?
The actual bible tells us that we are flesh and that no good thing lies within us.
Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing:
for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not
Jeremiah tells us that the heart is wicked.

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked:
who can know it?
The natural man is wicked, born into sin and yet Rick states that we should not
adhere to this notion, but rather we should not try and be anything but our natural
self.
Galatians tells us that the flesh and the spirit are contrary and that the two cannot
agree.
Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the
flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things
that ye would.
Paul implies that we are trapped in this body of flesh,
Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of
this death?
Its for these Biblical reasons that we must forever try to "Be someone else" and
that someone is Christ. Rick expands on his false teaching on page 52......
"Surrendering is not repressing your personality. God wants to use your unique
personality. Rather than it being diminished, surrendering enhances it"
Personality is largely developed by our environment and our surroundings (a
fallen world). The dictionary defines personality as
The totality of qualities and traits, as of character or behavior, that are peculiar to
a specific person.
Our personality pre-salvation is not to be preserved for it is perverse.
Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his
thoughts: and let him return unto the L, and he will have mercy upon him; and
to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
It must be remembered that TPDL, unlike the Bible is fallible and proof of this is
made clear through this blatant contradiction found on page 53 to the
aforementioned notion.
"In our case, it is intense warfare against our self-centered nature"
Page 49
Though the constant message to do things to please GOD is one of merit and
truth, the last little promise that Rick throws in as a payoff is one we have all
heard from televangelists...
Will you make pleasing God the goal of your life? There is nothing that God
won't do for the person totally absorbed with this goal
Now, I don't care how much my 11 year old son wants to please me, if he really,
really wants to drive my car up to McDonalds to buy $100 worth of
cheeseburgers; I'm still saying no. There are many, many things that GOD will

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

withhold from us despite our acts of will worship. Pauls later life was the
personification of making pleasing God the goal of his life.
2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept
the faith.
Yet Paul was afflicted and GOD would not remove it from him.
2 Corinthians 12:8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart
from me. 9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength
is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my
infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Why did Ricks Gospel not work for Paul? Simply because it is not true.
Throughout the bible we are told that we should live a selfless life. Jesus
commanded this directly.
Luke 9:23 Then he said to all, If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny
himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
Therefore any message that promotes receiving from GOD as a reason for
worship is in itself contradictory to Christs teaching as it means you are ceasing
to deny self.
Page 53
Rick claims The Bible is crystal clear about how you benefit when you fully
surrender your life to God.
He goes on to say that the bible says "Stop quarrelling with God! If you agree
with him, you will have peace at last, and things will go well for you"
Once again, the actual bible does not say this. It actually says..
Job 22:21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall
come unto thee.
The mis-interpretation of scripture that Rick presents here contradicts JESUSs
very promise that he made to us.
John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have
peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have
overcome the world.
GOD did not send his son as an atoning sacrifice so Things will go well with us.
On the contrary, he did so, so we could survive the hard times.
Page 53 misquotes.....
Offer yourselves to the ways of God and the freedom never quits.... [his]
commands set you free to live openly in his freedom.
Sadly this is just another mess translation. If you wish to try and figure out where
he gets this perverse teaching from, you can try and glean it from Romans 6:1518 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace?
Of course not! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as
obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin, which leads to
death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God

10

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

that, although you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient from the
heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted.18 Freed from sin,
you have become slaves of righteousness.
- Now I'm quite sure it says servants to righteousness, not "free to live openly in
his freedom."

On page 57 Rick has either failed to do the appropriate research or he is

blatantly lying when he teaches the following.
Praying without ceasing" means conversing with God while shopping, driving,
working, or performing any other everyday tasks.
Although this is a great idea, that is not what "without ceasing" means. - the
Greek word is adeealopotocee (strongs 89) which literally means uninterrupted,
on an appropriate occasion, without omission. It means to continue to pray in an
assiduous manner. (showing great care, attention, and effort)
So in all reality, Rick is teaching the exact opposite. GOD says to pray uninterrupted with attention, yet Rick says that it teaches to pray whenever.
Page 57 Rick makes a list of 6 needs be steps to a friendship with god.
BECOMING A BEST FRIEND OF GOD
1) Through constant conversation
2) Through continual meditation
3) I must choose to be honest with God brief statement..... "It is likely that
you need to confess some hidden anger and resentment at God"
4) I must choose to obey God in faith
5) I must choose to value what God values
6) I must desire friendship with God more than anything else
Out of these 6 steps he does not mention the number 1 most important step repentance. The very 1st thing that JESUS preached was to repent. After being
tested in wilderness for 40 days the scripture reads
Mark 1:12-15
12 Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. 13 And He was there in
the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and
the angels ministered to Him. 14 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came
to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, The time
is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.
I John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is
not in us. 9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins,
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
John tells that if we confess our sins, he will cleanse us. Repentance is the very
basis of self-denial. Its admitting you are wrong, admitting that you are to blame

11

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

and denying yourself for Christs sake. Of course, Rick doesnt teach about
repentance because it is Negative. His little mention of confession to GOD of
resentment hardly does the sinful nature of man justice, nor does it inform the
reader of the depth of their depravity.
On Page 70 Rick makes this stab at a fairly common Christianese statement.
You have heard people say, "I can't make it to the meeting tonight, but I'll be
with you in spirit." Do you know what that means? Nothing. It's worthless! As long
as you're on earth, your spirit can only be where your body is. If your body isn't
there, neither are you.....
Though what Rick is saying here is a good point (Similar to that of faith without
works is dead) the way he presents this is false - unless of course once again
Paul was wrong.
I Corinthians 5:3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged
already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed.
This very verse is where people take the phrase I will be with you in spirit. The
word spirit here is not The Spirit which would indicate he meant The Holy Spirit,
but is simply spirit.
Page 73
When you are a baby Christian, God gives you a lot of confirming emotions and
often answers the most immature, self-centered prayers-so you'll know he exists.
But as you grow in faith, he will wean you of these dependencies
This is not even alluded to in scripture and is nothing more than Rick's opinion of
GOD with no biblical basis whatsoever. This is also the very same doctrine that I
have witnessed in struggling Christians lives, Christians that have been walking
for many years and believe that "being on fire for GOD" is only for new
Christians. It is the attitude of institutionalized church that has caused this
waning. If we were to look at David as an example of his prayers, they did not
change. His prayers were often selfish prayers and were then concluded with
prayers proclaiming GODs sovereignty.
GOD calls us to work on our relationship with him in a selfish manner. It is our
outward actions and heart filled love for others that needs us to be unselfish, not
our own personal walk with GOD. GOD's nature towards our prayers is for an
intimate engaging that is full of questions....
Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the L: though your
sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like
crimson, they shall be as wool.
GOD calls us to reason together - A back and forth dialogue. Besides, If GOD
has to give you confirming emotions to let you know he exists, then it is not by
faith that you believe but by experience. (2 Corinthians 5:7)

12

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

JESUS gives us some indication of why this waning takes place in Matthew
13:18-23.
Note that JESUS says that it is because they hear the word of the kingdom
without understanding it, When some tribulation or persecution comes because
of the word, he immediately falls away or but then worldly anxiety and the lure
of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit
Please take note here that JESUS describes why this happens and the three
reasons he gives does not even remotely indicate that Ricks theory is even
similar to JESUSs.
Once again Page 78 sees a misquote from the mess. Since you are his child,
everything he has belongs to you" Message
The actual bible says
Galatians 4:7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then
an heir of God through Christ.
This sounds like a simple re-wording, but once again misconstrues the truth,
leading towards me, me, me.
Page 81
"Jesus said our love for each other -not our doctrinal beliefs- is our greatest
witness to the world"
- NO HE DID NOT! This is one of those instances that made me incredibly
frustrated and mad at such a blatant lie. Granted JESUS said
"By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one
another." (John 13:35), but this idea of not our doctrinal beliefs is nothing more
than a Warrenism. JESUS said during one of his last addresses to the disciples
before his Crucifixion,
If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15 Then in verse 21 JESUS
goes on to say
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and
he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will
manifest myself to him. So if Warren is not sliding these notions in to push his
own ecumenical agenda, then Im not sure where he is getting it from. Besides,
other scriptures throughout the bible show the importance of doctrinal unity
Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions
and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid
them......goes on to say.... 16:19 For your obedience is come abroad unto all
men. I am glad therefore on your behalf:
Page 87

13

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

Rick pushes his ecumenical agenda by stating The Bible says, "You belong in
God's household with every other Christian. That sounds fairly legitimate doesnt
it? The problem is the last part of what he said. with every other Christian
The Actual bible says Ephesians 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers
and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
Once again this is another example of Rick's mal-use of a false interpretation.
This word used for household of GOD is not the same word as "church". It
literally means domestic relative. It is explaining that as a Christian we are direct
family members of JESUS, but it is not referring to the Christianese "church" nor
to the notion that all people who call themselves Christians are/belong in the
household of GOD..
Page 91&92
"Jesus ministered in the context of a small group of disciples. He could have
chosen more, but he knew twelve is about the maximum size you can have in a
small group if everyone is to participate."
Once again opinion based with little biblical backing. In fact JESUS constantly
ministered to the multitude. In regard to ministering to his disciples, according to
John 6:66 JESUS had "many" disciples this did not include the 12 in regular
acceptance. The very reason he chose a small group of disciples as his "chosen
few" comes from a foundation of prophecy filling and the consequential apostolic
mantle of those few.
Page 92
In real fellowship people experience mutuality.
Once again this is a good notion and has some truth to it. However what is
clearly (and questionably purposefully) omitted is the reoccurring commandment
of mutual doctrine found throughout the bible, especially in the Pauline chapters.
Page 93
"When people sin, you should forgive and comfort them, so they won't give up in
despair"
II Corinthians 2:6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted
of many.
This is just a glimpse of a particular circumstance, not a blanket rule. It neglects
the numerous verses that talk about rebuke, correction and even discipline.
Obviously this book is not about rebuke and correction, but what the omission of
such truths does, is create an environment of fellowship void of correction. Rick
does throw in the occasional p.c. term of "accountability" from time to time, but
has done so in such a way that correction is avoided and rather a view of "forgive
at all costs" is portrayed.
I can understand the destruction that the churches unrighteous judgement has

14

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

meted out on so many brethren; and the temptation to defend the church and
amend this by painting the church as non- judgemental is quite frankly just the
"easy way out". The truth is however, that the church is to exercise righteous
judgement. If hurt brethren were to have this biblically explained, healing would
still take place. Though the explanation of this would require a lot more biblical
doctrinal defence than the "easy way out" on Ricks part, it would at least be the
honest thing to do. Of course, this kind of biblical teaching would not sell as many
books. Rick does say the following on page 96...
"Paul says, "Brothers and sisters, if someone in your group does something
wrong, you who are spiritual should go to that person and gently help make him
right again" Though this is bought up, there is no depth of discussion or
explanation to what this really entails. Rick does touch on "bringing up sin" but
doesn't explain about it. Such watering down is displayed in page 98.....
"God is very clear that we are to confront those who cause division among
Christians" - it does not say that!
The bible actually says.....
Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions
and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
So why the subtle avoidance of the "excommunication"? Because
excommunication is contrary to a new world religion.
II Thessalonians 3:14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that
man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
Page 95
Another gross misinterpretation
You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God and enjoy
its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other, treating
each other with dignity and honor. James 3:18 (Msg)....
The actual bible says James 3:18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace
of them that make peace. Note how there is no mention of Getting along in the
Actual bibles version of the verse. Once again, Ricks Ecumenical agenda
requires him to use a verse with a level of Eisegesis already written into them to
successfully prove his point.
Chapter 19
"the ability to Get along with others is a sign of spiritual maturity".
Hmm..... Isn't that a tasty sentiment. The important thing to note here is that Paul
is as always talking about doctrinal unity. The emphasis is on being like-minded,
not simply "agreeing". An atheist and myself can be in agreement with a lot of
things, mathematics, water is for quenching thirst, we breathe oxygen, grass is
green, without food we die, etc. etc. That does NOT mean however that we are
like minded. The atheists whole thought processes are drastically different from

15

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

mine as a kingdom seeker. So does that mean that my disagreement with the
atheist leaves me spiritually immature?
Page 101
The apostle James noted that many of our conflicts are caused by
prayerlessness: "What causes fights and quarrels among you? ... You want
something but don't get it.... You do not have, because you do not ask God.
Though once again the message behind what Rick is saying has merit; his
choice of biblical text to use as support, is once again applied by neglecting its
context and intended meaning. These particular verses James 4:1-3 is talking
about the origins of arguments, prepositioned with Where do wars and
fights come from among you? James 4:1 and the reason for unanswered
prayer (asking for the wrong reasons) that you may spend it on your pleasures
- James 4:3b. This verse is not expressing the need for prayer in conflict. If
Rick is able to do this with the most basic use of scripture, how much easier will it
be for him to be able to do it with complex scripture.
Page 104
Rick states: The same diamond looks different from different angles. God
expects unity, not uniformity, and we can walk arm-in-arm without seeing eye-toeye on every issue.
This contradicts not only the nature of GOD, but also what we the Church are
called to be.
Nature of GOD:
James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh
down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow
of turning.
What the Church is called to be:
Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
I Corinthians 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among
you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the SAME MIND and in the same
judgment.

Page 104
Point to Ponder: Relationships are always worth restoring
Once again, a very nice sentiment, yet not necessarily what the Bible says.
1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: Bad company corrupts good morals.
Romans 16:17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and
offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.

16

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

2 Thessalonians 3:6 In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you,
brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive
and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.
2 Thessalonians 3:14 Take special note of anyone who does not obey our
instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel
ashamed.
2 John 1:10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take
them into your house or welcome them.
Once again, Ricks Ecumenical agenda has a stronger emphasis than biblical
truths.
Page 105
"You are commissioned by Jesus Christ to do everything possible to preserve the
unity, protect the fellowship, and promote harmony in your church family and
among all believers. The Bible says, "Make every effort to keep the unity of the
Spirit through the bond of peace." How are we to do this? The Bible gives us
practical advice. Focus on what we have in common, not our differences. Paul
tells us, "Let us concentrate on the things which make for harmony, and on the
growth of one another's character"
Though this verse is talking about disunity in the church, contextually Paul is
addressing the issue of "the spirit of the word" - or what is the spiritual feeling
behind legal matters. He is expounding on the conscience of believers. Because
these dietary laws do not hinder or mar sound doctrine, Paul is giving advice of
peacemaking within this instance.
Romans 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and
things wherewith one may edify another.
Page 106
Rick states...."But for unity's sake we must never let differences divide us."
This is one of the fundamental flaws of Ricks doctrine. His underlying agenda
that permeates as a gentle undertow throughout this book... unity at all costs.
Why? Because once again, the ecumenical agenda is the backbone of his
Gospel. This false gospel is for the ushering in of his global peace plan.
Rick also makes the statement......"Nothing on earth is more valuable to God
than his church"......"When we focus on personalities, preferences,
interpretations, styles, or methods, division always happens. But if we
concentrate on loving each other and fulfilling God's purposes, harmony results"
Well wasn't that sneaky? Slip in the old interpretations where no one will bat an
eyelid. This is something that Rick is bound to endorse seeing that his "bible of
choice (the message) is so corrupt.
I say corrupt because of the blatant misrepresentation of what the real bible says.

17

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

For example, we expect our kids to act Christ-like. We as Christians have

adopted the notion of What would JESUS do? - I agree with this notion.
However, if we take The Message as true, then I can expect my children to tell
each other that when they dont understand one another they can tell each other
it's hasnt got through your thick skulls, because that is what JESUS would do...
John 8:37 But I also know that you are trying to kill me because my message
hasnt yet penetrated your thick skulls. - The Message

Page 107
"Besides, there is no perfect church to escape to. Every church has its own set of
weaknesses and problems. You'll soon be disappointed again" Well the Bible
says that he is coming back for his spotless bride. Ephesians 5 (Talking about
The church being The Bride of Christ) says
26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,
27) that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or
wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
What Rick fails to see or maybe he just fails to address, is the fact that GODs
church should be "perfectly put together with imperfect people" or in other
words... despite a church being full of saved people that make mistakes, that
same church should be biblical/perfect in its administration, contribution,
hierarchy, teaching and its disciplinary actions.
Due to the nature of the New Testaments construction (majority of the books
being letters to Churches), the bible is very clear about how to deal with issues
within the church. To the degree that it doesnt matter how "imperfect" its
attendees are, the laws in place for the church's "rules of engagement" (excuse
the pun) mean that the church remains perfect in its operation. This is the
"perfect church" that the world longs for.
Page 107 & 108
The Bible calls Satan "the accuser of our brothers." It's the Devil's job to blame,
complain, and criticize members of God's family. Anytime we do the same, we're
being duped into doing Satan's work for him. Remember, other Christians, no
matter how much you disagree with them, are not the real enemy.
In the actual bible, 1 John 2 teaches us that there are some among us that are
our enemies, calling them anti-christs
18) Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is
coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the
last hour. 19) They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had
been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they
might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

Philippians 3: 18) For many walk,(the Christian walk) of whom I have told you
often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of

Page 108
Rick pushes his Churchianity when he states "Be responsive to your pastoral
leaders. Listen to their counsel. They are alert to the condition of your lives and
work under the strict supervision of God. Contribute to the joy of their leadership,
not its drudgery. Why would you want to make things harder for them"
Though once again there is some merit in what Rock is saying here, the fact is
that he is missing a vital point. Hebrews makers it clear that we are to consider
the was that leaders conduct themselves. Hebrews 13:7 Remember those who
led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their
conduct, imitate their faith.
In fact, Rick goes one step further in his "pro-leadership" stance and guilt trips
the reader into believing that if they have not sat quietly by and allowed heresies
in the church then GOD will judge them......
"But you are accountable, too. You will give an account to God of how well you
followed your leaders" What is so sadly detrimental about this, is not only is Rick
deceiving the reader (the laity) but he is also failing to point out that the bible tells
us that the teachers (Leaders) will be judged more strictly than their followers.
James 3:1 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers,
because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
This would be an honest representation of Judgement around leaders/teachers,
not only warning potential leaders & teachers, but also encouraging the laity to
respect the leaders position for its serious level of responsibility, but would also
foster a healthy questioning of what that teacher says.
Page 109
"I challenge you to accept your responsibility to protect and promote the unity of
your church. Put your full effort into it, and God will be pleased"- Rick sets up a
false idea of church unity. After explaining this false idea through utilizing an
interpretation of the Bible (the message) rather than a bible, he guilt trips people
into agreeing with this false doctrine. (I challenge you to accept your
responsibility) He then goes one step further and states, if you do so, god will be
pleased. If this truly was the case, If GOD would actually be pleased with pushing
unity at all costs; including being under false teaching, then the bible is lying. We
have already touched on enough scriptures to show that the Bible teaches to
adhere to sound doctrine
Rick exposes his common misconception that church growth gauges whether or
not god is pleased with the church.....

19

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

God blesses churches that are unified. At Saddleback Church, every member
signs a covenant that includes a promise to protect the unity of our fellowship. As
a result, the church has never had a conflict that split the fellowship. Just as
important, because it is a loving, unified fellowship, a lot of people want to be a
part of it! In the past seven years, the church has baptized over 9,100 new
believers. When God has a bunch of baby believers he wants to deliver, he looks
for the warmest incubator church he can find.
This covenant making is not good. JESUS himself warned against such
practices.....
Matthew 5:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not
make one hair white or black. 37) But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay,
nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
Day 21
"Point to Ponder: It is my responsibility to protect the unity of my church"
This is as much sad as it is a lie. GOD does not command this, in fact he
expresses that it is each member's responsibility to question what is being done
in the church - and to protect sound doctrine.
I John 4:1 BELOVED, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they
are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
I Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into
Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
I Timothy 4:13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to
doctrine.
I Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in
them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear
thee.
Galatians 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into
the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be
some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we,
or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we
have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Paul is astonished that the Galatians were so soon removed from the true
doctrine of Christ. How does this happen? By not speaking against false
teachers. For this cause Paul goes on to say if someone teaches a doctrine that
is contrary to Paul's, they should be kicked out of the church (anathemah). But
not according to Rick Warren. He says it's your responsibility to just "get on with
each other".
Page 113

20

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

"Christlikeness is not produced by imitation" Even Rick Warren's corrupt

diversion, I mean version of the Bible is clear about this one "the message"
states...."watch what GOD does and then you do it".
A real translation of the bible makes it even clearer...
Ephesians 5:1 "be ye therefore imitators of Christ" ASV
So why this subtle remark? To imitate Christ would require inward examination,
followed by outward examination, followed by judgement within the church.
Rick Warrens number 1 rule is to sit idly by and allow the ecumenical movement
to be established. By setting the parenthesis that you don't change, but rather
Christ changes you from within, lays the foundation for no discernment, and no
room for judgement within the church.
Rick never actually directly addresses sin as the core problem of humanity.
Throughout the book he explains that everyone sins and that everybody has sin
and it is impossible to be sinless or perfect, however, he never truly addresses
the issue of repentance. At least not with a biblical view anyway.
On page 118, Rick explains what repentance means. To be like Christ you must
develop the mind of Christ. The New Testament calls this mental shift
repentance, which in Greek literally means "to change your mind."
Although in its simplest form this is what repentance means, where Rick then
takes this notion is once again straight from his own gospel. He writes
You repent whenever you change the way you think by adopting how God
thinks-about yourself, sin, God, other people, life, your future, and everything
else. You take on Christ's outlook and perspective.
This is actually not biblical. The reality is, we could use this method for any
example of changing our mind. Where do we draw the line? For example, are
stock brokers in a constant state of repentance? After all they spend all of their
working life changing their minds about stocks. Of course not, we would laugh at
such a notion. Yet Rick describes what repentance means as merely Changing
your mind. What is the biblical definition though?
2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves,
and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear
from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Acts 3:19 Therefore repent (to GOD), so that your sins may be wiped away, in
order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
Psalms 32:5 I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I
said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and you forgave the
iniquity of my sin. Selah
Isaiah 5:6) Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is
near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let
him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God,
for he will abundantly pardon.

Jeremiah 25:5 saying, Turn now, every one of you, from his evil way and evil
deeds, and dwell upon the land that the LORD has given to you and your fathers
from of old and forever.
Revelation 2:5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do
the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand
from its place, unless you repent
The biblical examples of repentance, true repentance is proven with actions.
Whilst speaking in Chronicles GOD says directly If they turn from their wicked
ways. Yet throughout his whole book Rick never speaks of sin in this manner.
During his explanation of repentance on page 118, he cunningly re-writes the
need for repentance as meaning to be like Christ. Though being Christ like and
repentance have some commonalities, they are not mutually inclusive. For
example, Christ was Christ minded, but he didnt need to repent. Or, to move
forward is to succeed. Cars move forward, so every time I drive my car, I am
succeeding. Likewise the two are not mutually inclusive.
Because of this sly abuse of the commonalities, Rick states that there are two
steps to being Christ minded or in turn, two steps to repentance.
1) stop thinking immature thoughts, which are self-centered and self-seeking.
2) start thinking maturely, which focuses on others, not yourself.
As you can clearly see, Ricks formula of repentance is nowhere close to GODs
formula of repentance.
Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 7:10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of
God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow
of the world produces death.
Rick tells us you just have to change the way you think.
Page 133
Actually, the closer you grow to God, the more Satan will try to tempt you. The
moment you became God's child, Satan, like a mobster hit man, put out a
"contract" on you. You are his enemy, and he's plotting your downfall.....
Now I know this is a common message among many people today. However, its
not what the bible tells us. Once again lets look at the blatant contradiction to
scripture.
Rick: Actually, the closer you grow to God, the more Satan will try to tempt you
Where the Bible teaches in James 4:7 Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil
and he will flee from you. 8) Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

22

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

Page 136
Rick makes this claim "It may surprise you that nowhere in the Bible are we told
to "resist temptation" Although the exact wording of resist temptation is not
found in scripture, the reality is that the notion does exist. James and Paul talk
about enduring temptation. We know that they would not mean to fall into
temptation, but rather resist it.
James 1:12 How blessed is the man who endures temptation! When he has
passed the test, he will receive the victor's crown of life that God has promised to
those who keep on loving him.
I Peter 1:6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye
are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
As quoted earlier, James also tells us to resist the devil and he will flee from
you. How do we practically resist the devil? After all he doesnt come and talk to
us face to face. On the contrary, his works are of temptation and accusation.
Therefore to resist the devil is to resist the temptations that he places before us.
After all it's is not GOD that tempts us..
James 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, I am being tempted by God; for
God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
Therefore if GOD does not tempt us, it must be either our own flesh or the devil.
Furthermore in Matthew 6:13 when Christ was teaching his disciples to pray, he
says And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.
JESUS is saying do not lead us into temptation, but (or instead) deliver us
from the evil one. Therefore the evil one is responsible for temptation.
Once again though, from his own book (page 136) he shows that this claim of the
bible not telling us to resist temptation is actually not true quoting Remember
that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others
experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so
strong that you can't stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show
you a way out so that you will not give in to it. 1 Corinthians 10:13
On page 139 Rick writes the following. How can we resist the Devil? Paul tells
us, "Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God." The first step is to accept God's salvation. You won't be able
to say no to the Devil unless you've said yes to Christ.
This sounds so good doesn't it? But it is not biblical. The bible says we are to first
put on the belt of truth (Ephesians 6). It is true to say without Christ you have
nothing, but to have Christ you must have truth. But because Rick is a
spokesperson of the ecumenical movement, he has to avoid verses that clearly
support the importance of knowing the truth.
Page 157
In an attempt to create a more seeker friendly walk, Rick claims. There is no
"right" or "wrong" temperament for ministry. Sadly this not what the Bible says.
Titus 1 makes clear outlines to what people in ministry should be like.

23

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

7) For the overseer must be above reproach as Gods steward, not self-willed,
not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid
gain, 8) but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
9) holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that
he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who
contradict.
Rick has once again taken a church idea and tried to make it a biblical one.
Though everyone is called to be a part of the body, not everyone is called to be
in ministry. I am going to be very direct here. Stacking chairs in a church is not
one's "ministry". Carrying out the reception and Administration duties within the
church is not someone's "ministry". And the very notion of it being so is all just a
manufactured ideal, formulated in vain attempt to keep people in church.
There are many members in the body yes, but some are there just to make the
body complete. The synchondrosis joints for example do nothing but hold other
joints together. They are almost completely stationary and have no intentional
moving. These joints are important but do not participate in conscious movement.
In like manner so too are some members of the church. Some are preachers;
some are teachers and so on. But this does not mean that all have a ministry.
Although it makes people feel more important within their position in the church, it
is wrong to call it a ministry.
Page 161
Rick makes a completely disingenuous and bogus statement. "there are no
definitions of the spiritual gifts given in the Bible". For someone who has a
Masters in Divinity and a Doctorate in Ministry, I find it incredibly difficult to
believe that Rick has never stumbled across 1 Corinthians 12. I honestly have no
idea why he would make this statement other than to try and dissuade ignorant
Christians from the truth into believing that If the pastor tells you it is your gift,
then it must be. Paul clearly lists and defines spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:411 spiritual gifts listed.
Page 172
Rick once again takes an underhanded blow at those that are critical against
false doctrine stating. "They're too busy doing the work God has given them" to
compare or criticize. "When you're busy serving, you don't have time to be
critical". What Rick is teaching here is to be so busy with Churchianity, that you
fail to assess biblical Christianity and furthermore Biblical Church Practise. I
believe that earlier biblical references prove the heresy in these statements.
On Page 176 Rick makes an oxymoronic statement claiming "The more honest
you are, the more of God's grace you get". To explain what this statement means
in secular terms, we would say The more honest you get the more

24

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

UNDESERVED favour you get. Can you see how much that does not make
sense? You cannot Do to get more of GOD. If you could, grace would not be
grace, but rather a reward.
Grace literally means UNDESERVED favour. This very notion is completely and
utterly heretical. Ephesians 3:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith.
And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.
On page 180 Rick uses his mess to speak of more ecumenical nonsense.
"We're Christ's representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to
drop their differences and enter into God's work of making things right between
them. We're speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God? - 2
Corinthians 5:20-21. If we read this verse in any other translation, there is
nothing written about drop their differences That is because there is nothing in
the greek that refers to Drop their differences No other biblical interpretation
has any reference explicit or implicit to this, the bible says nothing of the sort and
is in fact contextually talking about reconciliation to GOD.
Page 182
Paraphrasing Jesus...."He said in essence, "The details of my return are none of
your business. What is your business is the mission I've given you. Focus on
that"....."If you want Jesus to come back sooner, focus on fulfilling your mission,
not figuring out prophecy"
This is unbiblical, heretical diatribe that goes completely against JESUSs
teaching. In Mark 13 JESUS says
32 But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor
the Son, but only the Father. 33 Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know
when the time is. 34 It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and
gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the
doorkeeper to watch. 35 Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master
of the house is comingin the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster,
or in the morning 36 lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping.37 And what I
say to you, I say to all: Watch!
Paul expounds on this in 1 Thessalonians 5:
4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake
you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the
night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us
watch and be sober.
Proceeding this blasphemy against prophecy (GOD's words) Rick segues into
"It is easy to get distracted and sidetracked from your mission because Satan
would rather have you do anything besides sharing your faith. He will let you do
all kinds of good things as long as you don't take anyone to heaven with you. But
the moment you become serious about your mission, expect the Devil to throw all
kinds of diversions at you. When that happens, remember the words of Jesus:

25

The Purpose Driven Lie A Biblically based critique

"Anyone who lets himself be distracted from the work I plan for him is not fit for
the Kingdom of God"
This is not the scripture at all. JESUS is talking in light of missionary work yes,
but the distractions he is talking about is not the study of prophecy. The bible
clearly shows that the distractions JESUS is referring to are that of this world, not
the distractions of GOD's word (like there is such a thing).
On page 185 Rick takes the light off the Bible and points it back to mans
infallible version of experience stating "Another value of your testimony is that it
bypasses intellectual defenses. Many people who won't accept the authority of
the Bible will listen to a humble, personal story. That is why on six different
occasions Paul used his testimony to share the gospel instead of quoting
Scripture. The Bible says, `Be ready at all times to answer anyone who asks
you to explain the hope you have in you, but do it with gentleness and respect."
The best way to "be ready" is to write out your testimony and then memorize the
main points"
This is a dangerous instruction. It dis-empowers GODs word and engenders an
attitude that scripture is somehow redundant in today's world. Likewise, the Bible
also says the opposite Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on Him in whom
they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have
not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they
preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those
who preach the gospel of peace
Once again, Rick takes what he wants and leaves what is important. The points
he makes of you should preach your testimony and the bible says to be ready
in and out of season is selective to say the least. As if we look at what he leaves
out we will see a direct contradiction to what he is claiming. The actual verse
says Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. (2 Timothy 4: 2)

Page 191
Rick makes a claim that can only be explained as his own Gospel. Lets
remember that Rick claims JESUS said not to worry about end times and
prophecy. If he was to read into what JESUS said about end times, he would see
that the following statement he makes is completely unbiblical.
Because the rate of change is increasing in our world, more people are open to
hearing the Good News now than ever before.
JESUS when talking specifically about the end times says in Matthew 24:9 Then
they shall deliver you up to be afflicted and shall kill you, and ye shall be hated of
all nations for my names sake.
Then before the day of his crucifixion in John 14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the
world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him

Paul prophesied the following in 2 Timothy 4:3a For the time will come when they
will not endure sound doctrine
From page 191-193b Rick shifts into the promotion of missionary work. As usual
some of his points are of merit, but again he uses out of context scriptures to
support these views. Bear in mind that this book is given to new Christians as a
tool for discipleship. It is given to and is marketed towards people who are
struggling in their walk. With that in mind, the main problem with this section of
the book is the fact that up until this point, Rick has implicitly (and at times
explicitly) denounced the idea of biblical knowledge and the need for sound
doctrine. He constantly urges the reader to stop being critical and rather get
busy. He endorses the blind following of leaders and discourages eschatology
(even trying to claim that Christ spoke against it). He then says to these relatively
unlearned Christians Get out there and be a Missionary. Get out into the world
and start telling people about the gospel. But this beckons the question: What
gospel do these people know? Well if they have read this book up until this point,
and actually agree with it, then they know Ricks gospel, and not the Gospel as
found in the bible. In reality, he is pushing to create more and more Christians
that are ignorant to what the bible says about sound doctrine.
On Page 194 and 195 Rick speaks of five purposes and says that they
summarise the whole book. After misusing the Commission's commandment to
Baptise new believers as an endorsement for going to church; he then says that
in doing these five things you will be a great Christian. He goes on and says that
these five things are hard to balance. So he gives the readers Four important
activities to carry out, and doing so they will be Purpose driven. Now remember,
the whole idea of this book is that by living Purpose driven you will be a better
Christian. (Page 13 Verse to Remember: "Everything got started in him and
finds its purpose in him." Colossians 1: 16b (Msg))
What is amazing however, is that of these four things he says to do to he
DOESNT say to read the bible.
1) joining a small group for accountability,
2) by regularly evaluating your spiritual health,
3) by recording your progress in a personal journal,
4) and by passing on what you learn to others.
These are four important activities for purpose-driven living.
He then goes on to Strongly urge the reader to gather a small group of friends
to form a Purpose-Driven Life Reading Group to review these chapters on a
weekly basis
He then encourages the reader to do personal Bible study. Note how he does
not endorse group bible studies. With all things considered regarding Ricks view
on critical analysis of Churchianity, Its not hard to surmise why he says

Personal study as opposed to group study. But, lo and behold, Rick kindly
offers (or plugs) another one of his books stating My book Personal Bible Study
Methods can show you how to do inductive studies.
Its hard to believe that Ricks constant lack of pointing people to the Bible is not
intentional. On page 196 Rick states Write down your progress in a journal. The
best way to reinforce your progress in fulfilling God's purposes for your life is to
keep a spiritual journal. Rick doesnt only recommend keeping a journal, he
literally says it is the best way to check your progress. Once again this is not a
scriptural concept, but furthermore the bible gives us a clear best way to stay
on track. 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17) That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good
works.
I personally struggle to understand why Rick would not show this scripture in this
instance. I also struggle to believe he would endorse Journal writing over
consulting GODs word for any reason other than to deter people from seeing for
themselves just how false his own gospel is.
On Page 197 we once again see Rick smearing the lines between his book and
the bible by taking a biblical concept that applies to Biblical studies and uses it to
try and convince the reader to push Ricks agenda. Paul said, If you teach these
things to other followers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus. Notice how
he uses a verse that says you will be a good servant of Christ in doing so. Once
again he subtly tells the new Christian that if they get other people to read the
Purpose Driven Life, then they will be a good servant of Jesus Christ.
The last chapter of the book rounds out with a request to write out a personal
statement about the readers purpose and future. Again there is little mention of
reading the bible to find this purpose, and yet the twisting of scripture is still just
as present,
It is clear to me after reviewing this critique, that Rick does have his own agenda.
Just exactly what that is remains a little unclear. I can surmise my own theories
about what it is, but these main threads are evident.
1) He endorses a false interpretation of the Bible (The Message).
2) He manipulates scripture and recites verses out of context in attempt to
support his heretical statements.
3) He Pushes TPDL as if it were scripture and then abuses scripture to endorse
reading TPDL.
4) His theology and teaching is deeply rooted in ecumenism

Final Words

I personally have nothing against Rick Warren as a person. I do not know him,
and I can only Judge his theology by what he has written in his book. I thoroughly
believe that anybody that takes the time to honestly look into the scriptures I
have presented in contrast to TPDL will not be able to genuinely claim that his
book is sound Christian Theology. I am personally sickened at many things I
have read in TPDL and it greatly saddens me that so many pastors are giving
new and stumbling Christians this book as a tool for spiritual growth.
I pray the blinders will be removed from all who have read and or endorse this
book, and pray that Rick himself will repent of this wicked and perverse book that
he has so lucratively peddled to the undiscerning Christians of this era.
I leave you with two Bible passages to ponder.
Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast
rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me:
seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions
and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18)
For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and
by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
YAHWEH Gadol.
GOD bless.
