Course Contents:

Introduction: Definition, Characteristics of statistical data, Scope, functions, and limitations of statistics in business.

Data Collection and Presentation: Sources, Classification and tabulation of statistical data, Frequency distribution
and graphical representation of data.

Measures of Central Tendency: Introduction- Arithmetic Mean-Geometric mean- Harmonic Mean-Weighted


Arithmetic Mean-Mode-Median-Quintiles-Deciles-Percentiles-Properties of a Good Average- Empirical Relation
among the Average.

Measures of Dispersion: Significance of Measuring Dispersion-Properties of A Good Avery Dispersion- Range-InterQuartile Range and quartile Deviation- Mean deviation-Standard deviation-Co-efficient of Variation and Their
application.

Skewness, Moments, and Kurtosis: Moments about arbitrary value- Moments from mean- Relation between
moments- measures of skewness & kurtosis and their uses.

Correlation Analysis: Significance of the study of Correlation and Causation- Types of Correlation- Scatter Diagram
Method- Karl Pearsons Coefficient of Correlation-Rank correlation Coefficient.

Course Procedure: Course activities will include lectures and discussion of examples, homework, assignments, quizzes, a
midterm and a comprehensive final examination. Homework and assignments will be given during the classes. The completion
of these assignments before the deadline is absolutely essential for the mastering of this material.
Attendance: 5% of the total marks are allocated for attendance. If one does not attend at least 70% of the total classes, s/he
will not be allowed to take the final exam.

Administrative Information: There will be two 1 hour 30 minutes lectures and one 1 hour 30 minutes consultation every
week for this course. A pass in this course will earn you 3 credits.
