A pace or a footstep not be used as a standard unit of length because pace or footstep varies from
person to person and if two persons measure the same distance it may not come equal and will
create confusion.

As we know that
1 m = 100 cm = 1000 mm
Therefore,
1.65 m = 1.65 x 100 = 165 cm
1.65 m = 1.65 x 1000 = 1650 mm

Q.9
Why could you not use an elastic measuring tape to measure distance? What would be some of
the problems you would meet in telling someone about a distance you measured with an elastic
tape?
Ans
An elastic measuring tape is stretchable and hence its measurements will be inaccurate. So it
cannot be used to measure distance.
Probable problems in measurement with an elastic tape:
1) It is highly flexible and will give different readings at different times.
2) Since it is stretchable it will be difficult to measure how much the tape has been stretched
during distance measurement.
