Where is the rat?


Audience:
This ESL class is prepared for beginning level students. All of the students are
Chinese adult learners and most of them are new immigrants. The age range of the
students is flexible, from 30 to 80 years old. The learning goal is mastering survival
English skills. The lesson focuses on teaching students about the preposition. The
class scale is in mediate size, approximately 15 to 20 students in the class.
This class focuses on teaching preposition words. Before the class, students already learned
some preposition words and this would be the second class on learning it.
Learning outcome:
Students will be able to identify preposition words of place.
Students will be able to describe where the object is located using correct preposition
words.
Teaching Procedure (40 min)
Warm-up: (2 min)
Material needed: Internet, laptop, and projector
Procedure:
At the beginning of the class, the teacher play a
preposition song from YouTube:

2 minutes
(From 0:00 to 1:00. Play twice)

Lecture: (10 min)


Material needed: Whiteboard, marker, handout A
Procedure:
1.
The teacher writes down above, below, in front of and behind on the
whiteboard.
And the teacher says:
Today we are going to learn some preposition words, which I just wrote
down on the whiteboard and you just heard from the song.
2.
The teacher gives handout A to students individually.

3.
The teacher teaches the pronunciation and explains the meaning of those
words and read example sentences. (In order)

Activity 2 (5 min)
Materials: Internet, laptop, projector
Procedure:
The teacher tells Ss that they are going to listen to the song again, that was
played at the beginning of the class. And when they listen to the song, they
need to write down at least one sentence of describing the position of rat or
cat or bat.
The teacher plays the song three times.
Giving Ss around 1 min, and let Ss share the sentence they wrote.
Activity 3 (5 min)
Materials: Internet, laptop, projector
Procedure:
The teacher uses the laptop to log in the English learning website:

Explain the rules to Ss before playing the online game, which is: There are
images and in some cases audio in these types of games. Drag and drop the
words into the correct spaces to complete the sentence. After that, click
SUBMIT. If you are correct, the monkey will get a banana.
Let Ss to practice the preposition through the online exercise; when Ss make
mistakes, the teacher should explain right after.
Activity 3 (10 min)
Materials: handout B
Procedure:
The teacher gives the handout B to students. Let Ss complete the handout B
individually. They do not need to hand in after finishing it. But they need to

check the accuracy by themselves after completing it. When the majority
learners finish the self-check, the teacher checks the answer with the whole
class; and answer students questions if they have.
