Treaties, including fishing and hunting rights

Pre confederation treaties are the douglas treaties. The Douglas treaties , also
known as the Vancouver Island Fort Victoria treaties, were a series of treaties signed
between certain indigenous groups on Vancouver Island colony. The Douglas
treaties also known as the Vancouver island or the Victoria were a series of treaties
signed between certain indigenous groups on Vancouver Island and the Colony of
Vancouver Island. In the mid-1850s, the federal government wanted to make

the Washington Territory a state. The federal government determined that

the tribes were sovereign nations with title to the land. The United States
government approached individual tribes, in the same manner that it
would approach another sovereign nation, and negotiated treaties to
acquire the lands held by the tribes.

A Definition Of A Treaty
A treaty is a formal agreement between 2 groups, usually sovereign
bodies or nations. Treaties with the first nations in Canada were
agreements between the government and the first nations to clear land of
aboriginal title so the land could be used for settlement resource extraction
or transportation routes like railways certain payments and benefits were
traded in exchange for the clear title to the lands. In negotiating treaties
the government acknowledges the title of the first nations of their land.

Why Treaties
The treaty negotiations process provides a framework for the three parties Canada, BC
and First Nations to work towards the common goal of reconciliation, and building a new
relationship, through constitutionally entrenched government to government to
government understandings. Some of the major issues that are integral to modern
treaty making in British Columbia.
