Gregory, Danny. Lets Get Rid of Art Education in Schools. Danny Gregory, 15 Apr. 2016,
www.dannygregorysblog.com/2016/04/15/lets-get-rid-of-art-education-in-schools
In the editorial, Gregory touches on the issues that lie in the already existing art programs
and what actions can be taken to improve them. He utilizes reports made about the third of art
teachers being laid off because of Common Core and No Child Left Behind Programs
implemented in California. Also including that the students most affected by these arts program
layoffs are those in low income and minority communities. Gregory demonstrates that the
already underfunded and inexperienced staffed programs are unsuccessful in exposing students
to art or holding their interests in it. Not ridding schools of art programs as the title suggests, but
creating a curriculum to be taken more seriously and that actually allows for the development of
useful skills. Gregorys editorial provides me with a unique take on how to deal with the lack of
youth exposure to visual arts and reiterates that the import thing about art the arts is not
necessarily art education, but providing children with the tools to express their own creativity. I
want to be able to not solely focus the importance of my project on art, but the important self
expression that they allow to take place.

The Washington Times, 14 Mar. 2016,
www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/mar/14/arts-programs-in-schools-often-in-dangerof-being-/
In this article, Hambek debates whether or not the arts programs in U.S. schools are in
danger of being cut and exemplifies what a school in Minot, North Dakota has done to protect
their arts. After compiling evidence from the Department of Education and Minot Daily news,
she is able to assess the real risks of art programs in schools and what is working to keep them
implemented. Hambek depicts the truth about what the nation holds for the future of arts
programs and how they will only negatively impact student performance in school. She also
includes the alternative solution that has been taken in some schools in Minot, North Dakota to
ensure the arts remain funded by making it a core subject. This article is able to accurately
display the risks that are being taken with our nations art programs when it comes to budget cuts
and reports the cuts already taken, this will help me support my topic about the public school arts
being in danger. Also, the example of the schools in North Dakota is a good indicator of the
alternative actions that can be taken to protect already existing art programs in public schools.
Prey, Barbara Ernst. The Value and Importance of the Arts and the Humanities in Education and
Life.The Huffington Post, TheHuffingtonPost.com, 9 Nov. 2014,
www.huffingtonpost.com/barbara-ernst-prey/the-value-and-importance-_b_5788116.html
In National Council on the Arts member, Barbara Prey, argues the arts importance in
education and why they should be prioritised just as much as STEM subjects. By using historic
examples of the arts importance and how it can be integrated into the fields of STEM, Prey
establishes the arts value in the U.Ss future. Prey discredits the presumption that creative
expression is only limited to include literary, performing, and visual arts, and instead displays the

fact that they encompass a broader reach in our everyday lives. She believes that the arts a
simply a gateway or vessel for developing lifelong skills. The article gives great examples of
how arts can be beneficial beyond just the classroom, allowing them to re establish their
importance in society. I want the art to guide children into developing deeper social and thinking
skills that can be applied not only to future careers, but directing them toward leading more rich
and meaningful lives.
Start A Program. Americans for the Arts, Americans for the Arts Action Fund,
http://www.americansforthearts.org/by-program/services-and-training/services-for-yourorganization/start-a-program
The Start A Program page on the Americans for the Arts foundation site provides in
detail information on how one can start their own art program in their community. After
gathering an abundance of consulting and technical resources for prospective program leaders to
utilize, the site displays when these resources will be needed to be put to use and for what for in
a project. The page guides a person step by step on the necessary pieces it takes to create a
successful art program, and provides links and information on where one can seek help to
support their program and get it on its feet. The site, especially this page, gives me more tools to
further my search on how to make a community art program in the first place. It depicts that
starting a program isnt as simple as it sounds and puts into perspective the amount of work I
have ahead of me.
Stuckey, Heather L., and Jeremy Nobel. The Connection Between Art, Healing, and Public
Health: A Review of Current Literature. American Journal of Public Health, American
Public Health Association, Feb. 2010,

In the article, Stuckey and Nobel explore the connection between people being involved
in the creative arts and their mental and physical health. They are able to show clear evidence of
the the benefits of art therapy on health with a variety of research provided by the Foundation
for the Art and Healing. Stuckey and Nobel want to establish some type of base on which to
build upon with further researching into the complex relationship between the arts and bettering
health. Through extensive data compiled with assessing the effectiveness of different forms of art
on a persons health, there is shown to be a clear and significant positive outcome overall.
Stuckey and Nobels research provides me with the scientific backing to support why the arts are
vital to childhood development. I can show how artistic or creative expression is an important
building block for the mental health of a child, which will prioritise its need in our community.
