OF N-BENZALANILINE
VAN PUTTEN1
Abehxet-The NMR spectra of N-benzalaniline. its six monomethylated and both sync-trimethylated
derivatives have been recorded. These spectral results are consistent with a mean conformation for Nbenzalaniline in which the aniline ring is twisted out of the plane of the benzalimino moiety.

investigations of the
geometry of N-benzalaniline 1 have been interpreted in terms of both planar la and
non-planar lb anti-geometries. I. I2 In the latter case, the aniline ring is twisted out
of the molecular plane. Most recently, theoretical studies have been interpreted in
terms of conformation lc which, although planar, postulates an abnormally large

EXPERIMENTAL
Preparation q-f N-bmzakznilines. Equimolar quantities of the appropriate aniline and benmldehydc
derivativea were heated on a steam bath for 30 min and distilled at co @5 mm Hg through a 15 cm Vigre.ux
Column. Their physical constants were consistent with literature valuea
NMR spectra All spectra were recorded with a Hitachi-Perkin Elmer R-20 High Resolution Spectrometer at 60 MCon samplea containing SOmg solute in @5 ml CDCI, with TMS as internal standard.
Acknowledgnnent-We wish to acknowledge the Chemical Laboratory of the Haile Sellassic 1 University,
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where a portion of this work was carried out during our tenure there in the Department of Chemistry. One of us (JWP) would like to acknowledge the George Washington University,
Washington, DC, in whose Chemical Laboratory the NMR spectra were recorded.
