Developing Professional Practice - Assignment Guidance Activity 1

The following is designed to help you with your first assignment on this programme, at this
level of study. It brings together guidance for the assignment and different aspects of study
skills that you will need to develop over time. It is strongly recommended that you read widely
to support all of your assignments and invest in a study skill book such as The Study Skills
Handbook by Stella Cottrell.
Briefly explain how the CIPD HRPM defines the HR profession, including the professional
areas, the bands and the behaviours.
Key words - how the HRPM defines the HR profession (these tell you what you have to do) *
First you might wish to define what you understand by the HR Profession. * Then you will be
able to use you explanation of the map to illustrate how CIPD feel that this defines the HR
profession.
Sources of information
In lesson 1 we looked at the HR Contribution and HR being based on core principles.
The text book also provides a section on What is HRM. These should help with your
definition. You may also use seek definitions of HR as a profession from the CIPD website,
alternative text books, or other sources. In lesson 3 we covered how HR provides a service
to a range of customers. This is part of the function of HR.
Having this as your basis will then allow you to briefly describe the HRPM and explain how it
defines the HR professional i.e. how it supports your definition and underpins the services
HR provides to its customers.
Remember to consider the different roles and aspects of HR as a profession and the
attributes required for these roles, also the career progression through the profession. This
will enable you to link the theory to the map. ------------------------------------------------Evaluate how the two core professional areas and any two selected behaviours uphold the
concept of HR Professionalism, giving examples from the knowledge and activities at band
2.
Key words again the words in yellow tell you what you have to do. * First you could define
the idea of HR Professionalism

* Then you would be able to bring in how the two core professional areas (PAs) support this
idea. * You will find then that two of the behaviours will naturally link in to support your
argument, as they display the attributes an HR Professional might have in order to carry out
the activities identified in the PA. * Examples to support the theory may then be drawn from
one aspect activities and one of knowledge from each PA. These examples may be general
or could be drawn from your own experience.
Sources of information
The unit guidelines (on Moodle) provide a range of aspects of the HR Professional covered
in the lessons: * The role and contribution of the HR Professional types of action taken,
acting as ambassadors, business partnering, being a thinking performer, the importance of
behaving effectively re reputation and service delivery. * What it means to be a professional: code of conduct, professional ethics, fundamental beliefs and concepts (covered in lesson 1),
meeting customer needs efficiently and effectively with discretion.
The text book Taylor and Woodhams Chapter 4 covers all of the above aspects.
Incorporating theory and references:
You may refer to theorists such as Ulrich, case studies or articles read such as role call,
business partnering, Business Savvy, the thinking performer.
These do not need to be explained. An example would be:
Taylor and Woodhams (2012 p80) identify the CIPD concept of the thinking performer, as
sitting at the very heart of professional practice. Although also a theory promoted by CIPD,
this supports the idea that .. and may be linked ..
------------------------------------------------Explain, with related examples, why HR Professionals need to be able to manage
themselves, manage groups or teams, manage upwards, and manage across the
organisation.
Key words explain why HR Professionals need to be able to manage The word why
is important it is not how.
By now your report has already discussed the HR Profession and the role of HR Professional
in relation to the range of services provided to customers and how the concept of the HRPM
supports this. This part of the report should now take the idea a stage further to illustrate that
there are four different elements to being an effective HR professional.
Here you will need to bring together the importance of meeting the needs of a range of
different customers who operate at different levels, inside and outside of the organisation.

Hence the need to be able manage in different ways.

Sources of information:
The text book Taylor and Woodhams Chapter 4 covers all of the above aspects including self
management, team working, networking, influencing etc. Ulrich, Business Partnering, Role
call case study, etc may be mentioned to support your own theories. The lesson provided
additional theories in management and leadership, plus self management skills.
With regard to management, leadership and team theories ensure you use them only to
support a theme that you are discussing to answer the WHY question.
Examples might be:
An HR professional may not always be a manager but may still need to demonstrate
leadership skills in leading, either within in a team or a task. Adairs model (1983) illustrates
the importance ....
Managing across and upwards in organisations may be difficult but the flowing example
shows how an HR professional might adapt Blanchard and Herseys (2007) style of
leadership to manage different situations.
