PROCAD ELECTRIC User Guide

PROCAD ELECTRIC Features

PROCAD ELECTRIC Features

PROCAD ELECTRIC streamlines electrical drawing generation. PROCAD ELECTRIC lets
you create single line diagrams, control schematics and layout drawings.
PROCAD ELECTRIC's commands are structured to flow logically and assist you by
displaying useful messages.

Modular Programming
The PROCAD ELECTRIC functions are modular for maximum memory usage efficiency.
The application loads general program files at start-up, and loads all other functions when
you invoke them.

English and Metric Units Operation

You can apply working and display unit settings to your drawing standard.
Working units refers to the length and coordinates information used to insert components.
Displayed unit refers to units that appear when selecting component sizes.
Set the units using Standard Manager. Refer to the Standard Manager User Guide.

Drawing Compatibility
For more information please refer to Interfacing with PROCAD 2D Applications Guide.

Schematics and Layout Drawings

You can use PROCAD ELECTRIC to generate schematic drawings as well as layout
drawings. Select the drawing type each time you start a new drawing.

Customization
You can customize many of the application's default settings to conform to specific
standards, including layers, component sizing, and text heights.

Online Messages
PROCAD ELECTRIC displays messages in the command line and/or dialog boxes.

Page 1

PROCAD ELECTRIC Features

Repeating Commands
As in AutoCAD, you can repeat many commands by pressing the Enter key or the space
bar.

Error Detection
Every function contains error detection to prevent you from entering incorrect data. When
you enter erroneous input, the application alerts you and prompts you for different input.

Automated Layering
PROCAD ELECTRIC places components in designated layers. For example, it places valves
in the VALVES layer and instruments in the INSTR layer. You can modify the layering
system to conform to their layering standards. Use the Standard Manager to set the layers.

Software Updates and Technical Support

When properly installed, your PROCAD 2D or PROCAD 2D+ folder contains a Support
Web Page icon. Click this icon and follow the Product Updates link to receive updates to
your software program files. You can only access this feature through the Web.

Using the Tabbed Toolbox

The tabbed Toolbox provides easy access to PROCAD ELECTRIC's tools, grouping them
under tabs that keep the tool buttons visible at all times.
PROCAD ELECTRIC displays different tabs and tool buttons for layout and schematic
drawings.

Accessing Tools
To insert a component or perform an operation, click the desired tab, and then click the
required tool button.
Some buttons act as toggle switches. If a toggle is active, the button appears highlighted; if
inactive, the button appears normal.

Display or Hide the Toolbox

To display the Toolbox, select Display Toolbox from the PROCAD ELECTRIC menu.
To hide the Toolbox, click

in the top right-hand corner of the Toolbox.

Customizing the Toolbox

You can dock the Toolbox on the left or right side of the screen, or float it over the drawing
area.
To reposition the Toolbox, grab the title bar and drag it to a new location. The Toolbox
automatically docks when placed close to the left or right side of the screen.
Double-click the title bar to toggle the Toolbox between docked and floating mode.
Some tabs contain more tool buttons that what you can see on the screen. To view all
commands, scroll down.

Toolbox Icons
For a complete list of all Toolbox buttons, see Appendix C: Button References.

Using the Digitize Buttons

In some dialog boxes, a Digitize button appears next to an input box.
For example, the Rectangle dialog box contains both input boxes and Digitize buttons.

If you click Digitize beside any input box, the dialog box temporarily disappears, and
command line messages prompt you to select points within the drawing.
After you click the required point(s), the dialog box returns, and the points you selected
appear as values in the input box.
When all input boxes contain values, click the Draw Rectangle button. The rectangle
appears in the drawing

Border Drawing and Revision Blocks

Creating a Default Revision Block File

Create your own revision blocks if the default border drawings do not include revision block
information (refer to AutoCAD's manual on how to create blocks with attributes).
You can also use Standard Manager to map to your own in-house revision block drawings.

To create a default revision block drawing file

1. Create a separate revision block drawing for each drawing size.
2. Set the insertion point for the revision block. Use a reference point such as an
intersection.

3. Save the drawing to [Project]\Borders directory using the following naming

conventions:
English

Plotting

Plotting
Plotting a Drawing
To plot a drawing, use AutoCAD's PLOT command. Refer to your AutoCAD manual for
details.

Layering System
The Standard Manager controls all the programs generic layers. This layering system places
entity groups on different layers, and assigns each group a color and line thickness. This
makes it easy to configure the application for pen plotters or printer-type plotters such as
laser and ink jets.
Use the Standard Manager to change layer colors, line type and line thickness.

Laser and Ink Jet Plotters

PROCAD ELECTRIC assigns these types of plotters as the default.
Line width is plotted according to the polyline's default thickness. Control plot appearance
by assigning line widths to layers or colors.

Pen Plotters
If using a multi-pen plotter, assign specific line colors to pens with different thickness or set
all the polyline widths to zero and allow the pen thickness to determine the plotted width of
that line.
If using a single pen plotter, set all pen widths to zero, and use polyline widths to control line
appearance.

Model and Paper Space Scale

For detailed information, refer to AutoCAD's online help.
Use the Model and Layout tabs at the bottom of the drawing window to switch between
Model and Paper Space.

Page 152

PROCAD ELECTRIC User Guide

Plotting

Switch to Paper Space to plot the drawing

PROCAD ELECTRIC inserts all equipment and components in Model Space.

Plotting from Model Space

Insert the border drawing, title, and revision blocks in the Model Space.
PROCAD ELECTRIC scales these blocks to match the drawing scale selected at the start of
the drawing. For example, if you selected 3/8"=1'-0" scale, the border drawing is multiplied
by 32.
When you plot the drawing, enter that scale in the plot dialog box.

Plotting from Paper Space

1. Click the Layout tab to switch to Paper Space.
2. Insert drawing border, title, and revision blocks.
3. In AutoCADs command line, type MVIEW.
4. Click two points on the Paper Space page to define the view area.
The system displays a section of the Model Space in that view.
5. Double-click the view to activate it.
6. From the Utilities tab, select Paper Space Scale.

The Select Paper Space View Drawing Scale dialog box appears.

Page 153

PROCAD ELECTRIC User Guide

Plotting

7. In the scroll list, select the scale for this viewport.

8. Click OK.
The application adjusts the viewport to the selected scale.
9. Repeat Steps 3-5 until all required views appear on the page.
10. Send the drawing file to the plotter using a scale factor of 1:1.
